>Found an issue with the site? Lost your streak and want to appeal? Please message the contact link at the bottom of the site instead of posting in the thread.

Rules:
>Draw every day (or your preferred frequency)
>Submit your work by 23:59:59 GMT
>Spend at least 30 minutes on each submission
>No loli or shota porn
>Miss a day and you'll be alright, just keep going!
>Maintain your streak and you too can become the LAST ARTIST STANDING!!

FAQ:

What is the goal?
>To form a habit of drawing. The gains you make are dependent on you.

I am /beg/gar and not know draw, can I join?
>Yes x99. Stop asking and start submitting art, chum. Make something!

How long does it take until my account is approved?
>Between two to three weeks, usually when you reach level 3. Even unapproved submissions count toward your streak!

A brief history:
>Last Artist Standing (LAS): The original site, created by Lava (presumed dead, rest in peace). It has changed and ruined the lives of many lassies.
>Draw Every Day (DED): A short-lived site between LAS and DAD, run and abruptly cancelled by w.
>Do Art Daily (DAD): The current site, by the dadmin and developer banana.

Are there any good reasons to post on DAD?
I think about dropping out. I can maintain my streak on my own (but without having to work ahead one day, to have something to post in case of an emergency), I can use a spreadsheet to track my hours and despite being here for years I didn't manage to form any friendships.
At the same time scanning and photographing my work, putting it on dad, reading and replying to comments and so on can be a bit time consuming and even stressful at times.

So yeah. Why are you posting on DAD, dad? There are other habit and time trackers available

It keeps the pressure up to draw that I don't have otherwise. Friends? That's for people with social talent, I don't have such a thing so I could care less about that.
But yeah, posting daily can be a bit much, that's why I set the posting to 3 days. That way I'm still pressured to post, but not so much.

I like DAD a lot, and while I share that incomprehensible anti-4chan bias (then why am I here?) I think the DAD community on average is less 4channy than 4chan proper. I have a pet theory that most of the toxicity on 4chan is just crabbing from people dissatisfied with where they are in life, and the main reason they are not where they want to be is because they aren't putting in the work. By enforcing regular effortmaking I believe DAD has a filtering mechanism that removes some of our worst selves, whether that's the worst people in our communities or the worst tendencies within each one of us.

The number score/ranking/tier itself is kinda meaningless when it’s so subjective and the judges are /int/s, it doesn’t matter whether a couple of random artists think your creativity is 2 points better or worse than some other artist. The tier tourney should be about trying to compete with yourself rather than with your peers.

Color isn't a half of fundamentals, but it's not completely insignificant either.
8/10 max.

>> No.6887592

>>6887580
Color isn't a fundamental. Don't agree? Ask yourself what "fundamental" even means. It's something that applies no matter what, it's something intrinsic and immutable. Perspective is fundamental to drawing because all representational artwork involves a spatial relationship between subjects. If you're drawing something then perspective is inescapable, so improving your knowledge and skill with perspective will improve all your drawings, no matter how you use that knowledge and skill. Anatomy is inescapable, because in order to draw something you need to know what that thing IS, or at least is comprised of, even if just so you can draw it wrong on purpose.
On the other hand, color does NOT apply to almost all drawings. VALUE does, not but not color. There's entire industries built on artwork that is drawn entirely without color. One can be a successful professional artist for one's entire life without ever touching color if one really doesn't want to. Is it a good skill to have? Absolutely. Is it FUNDAMENTAL to creating artwork? Absolutely not.

Tournaments started as a way of getting an OBJECTIVE tierlist. Judges not being objective, using vague criteria or not adhering to the scoring system will make people seethe for a good reason.

I wish Vastian would be a judge next year. I don't always agree with him, but he really puts a lot of effort into his critme critiques and he seems to genuinely care and try to help others improve. When someone spends long hours on their work and asks for a critique, then getting just a one sentence comment can be slightly disheartening. If judges could participate as well, then I'd apply to being one next year.

Or maybe it's just me. I try to treat art seriously.

I gave tg high scores because his art is genuinely that good to me. Haven't judged the costume party submission yet but I'd definitely score it pretty damn high too. It's a creative concept. I feel like I explained my scoring on the harvest entry in enough detail that the numbers weren't a mystery there.
Tortures drawing there is fairly creative too but it's not THAT creative. The concept is creative enough but it's not executed on very well. It's lacking in storytelling, the pieces are there but she didn't find a way to make it come together imo. You could just as easy read it as a guy beset by goblins while he's trying to run bleach through his toilet. I'd probably give it a 6 or 7 on creativity at best too. What would you give it?

>What would you give it?
9, maybe even 10/10 in creative score. Table, who did a very literal interpretation of the prompt shouldn't get a higher score than 5, it's not more creative than what ililisDrawings did, it was just executed better.

Oh well, I reckon the actual idea of tg's thing (a popout sign invitation with character cutouts) is more creative than "man surrounded by monsters wearing human masks in grey void". You disagree, fair enough. For what it's worth if they were both just jpgs then I'd probably rate them about the same, tg's is still full of the fun little tg scene decorations that add an element of storytelling to his effortpieces.
>Then snips his points in "fundamentals" or "technique", not in "creativity".
No. The problem holding back its creativity score is still the lack of storytelling. By rearranging elements, having there be some kind of action, we can introduce storytelling. Perhaps the man is actually drinking from the bottle, thus reinforcing this reading you have of it being that he's being driven to drink. The problem isn't a technical one, it's a conceptual one.

I gave myself like a 7? I also had a base score of 5 because it was just a party. But I did +2 because there was a discernible story, going to the party and leaving the party, and a reason why we were leaving. I usually put story telling in creativity. One could argue that the card itself is 4th wall costuming because it’s wearing something cute when you look at it from the outside. Which is what I wrote in the description. But if you judge it as a 2 panel comic only, it’s not. I put the card implementation in technical when I scored myself. I guess part of the game is making the judges guess how to score because of the execution. Like echos washer. Which I really didn’t like, but it’s hard to score so it just ends up with a high score.

I forgot what I gave torture, but there is a limit to readability and creativity. If I can’t understand it because of how it is presented then I’m not just going to give it a 10. The extrema being a creative written description scoring a 10 on a blank canvas. Which I don’t think anyone would earn.

To be honest with you, I found costume party to be a really hard prompt for creativity. So I tried a different angle to be creative with the implementation and presentation as opposed to the content. I don’t think I gave anyone over an 8, in creativity but tableguy 10s in creativity are pretty rare.

For creativity, I gave tableguy a 8 and torture a 7. TG's score is elevated by going with an actual invitation and his cutout design. If torture's intention was to be a piece on depression or alcoholism, I missed it. My interpretation was cultish guys in robes doing some ritual or hazing initiation.
I agree with dingle and TG, you can have an amazing concept but you have to be able to convey it. It seems like you value concept over execution, which is fine, but I think they go hand in hand.

It's "beglet scibbles", but they read extremely well, it's very clear what's going and it was almost one-to-one easily translated into an anime.

Meanwhile something technically well drawn, but with shit composition would struggle with getting the point across, viewer would get confused by what's going on. Like eschner illustrations, but with boring perspective and not done on purpose.

So yeah. If you want to actually say something with your art, to make it more memorable than confusing, then composition could be important.
