I hear it all the time, you have to practice your fundamentals before doing this or that. You have to learn the rules before you break them, etc.

What fundamentals do I need if I'm only really interested in character art? I feel like I've been drawing spheres and cylinders for a while now with no measurable way to transfer that to characters @~@ ?

Bonus question, should I be drawing characters along side or after learning these fundamentals?

when you feel confident with spheres and cylinders you start loomis, when you're good at using the mannequin for figure drawing you learn bones and muscle groups and so on

>Analyze what is wrong with it

I'll try to keep this as concise as possible for accurate feedback.

I don't think I have the eye to analyze effectively, hear me out. When I look at what I'm doing and what someone else is doing. I see the forms but it's hard to see the logic.

I'll use cloth for an example, I can copy it one to one. But applying it to my own work is challenging. I'll "feel" like I'm doing it right, but I can clearly see it's wrong. Which of course naturally means I'm not doing it right, but it's escaping me.

How does one analyze effectively? @~@

You must draw two hundred and fifty boxes freehand in three point perspective using a felt tip pen.

you must draw 250 boxes, 250 cylinders, and 250 treasure chests using a felt tip pen and you must repeat this exercise until you can draw these shapes in any angle perfectly

It's bit difficult to give any exact advice without seeing an example of your work, maybe post a study you've made?
>I can copy it one to one.
This sounds like the problem here, are you actually understanding the form, or are you just copying lines? For example, you're making a still life of a white sheet draped over a chair. Can you make your own additions to it, like imagine the sheet has stripes, or dots, or a checkered pattern?

everything is made of atoms which are basically balls so if you draw balls very well you can draw anything really

Those are probability densities of where you might find the electron on a hydrogen atom, not the shape of the atom.

All of them. What the fuck do you think "fundamental" means?

>> No.6880739

any "fundamental" people can come up with has more examples of good artists NOT doing it. and when you ask them to post examples they'll post some shitty ugly sketches of naked fat women by some old fuck that can't draw.

can you find give examples of good artists that don't do any of the following?
>perspective

No one really calls "composition" a fundamental, it's more of a big-picture concept than a specific system you're "supposed" to learn before you can supposedly make good art. It would be like calling "style" a fundamental.
"Proportion," similarly was always a dumb one. Everything inherently has proportion because everything has size, and proportions vary wildly in nature so there isn't necessarily a correct proportion, this supposed fundamental tells you nothing.

Most important skill is copying
>copy cool art once
>try to do the cool art again but without looking
>fix your drawing while looking at the art again

Over and over again until you can do cool things from memory
or try copying a drawing but change a thing about it, give the girl a different hairstyle or change what shes holding or change what her arms are doing and youre gonna learn how to turn reference into something completely different while still having a guide
