I'm starting to get the form drawing method. I'm noticing that so far my figures had a lot more of copying the image I saw in my eyes than I thought. If you’re beg, maybe go through a drawing fundamentals course like Brent eviston.
For figures, start by just drawing lots of figures from refs. Information in instructional books like loomis, Hampton, vilppu will be less impenetrable once you actually need it for the figures you’re already drawing

Then I went through Michael Hampton's Analytical Figure Drawing video course plus his free YouTube videos. Also a little bit from his book.

After that, I did Proko's free anatomy playlist.

Plus lots of random figure drawing videos people shared here. Videos from Glenn Vilppu, Steve Huston and LoveLifeDrawing have been the most useful so far. Right now I'm going through Steve Huston's book.

There's not really any image in my mind at all.
Draw a circle, draw a curve from it, now that's the head and neck, draw a bigger oval, that's the rib cage, keep going.
It's just about adding stuff, and thinking about how it would make sense later. Keep in mind I've been grinding the vilppu course for the past 3 weeks or so, so my visual library is doing most of the work

after setting down your initial lines, check for alignments, for example, the leftmost edge of the forehead aligns vertically with the rib cage, and from that you can take a guess on how much farther the arm and hip has to go. You can also use simple measurements to compare length and width, it really helps to keep the proportions of the model.
You made a lot of marks for the hair, but its hard to determine the structure of it, try starting with a simple shape and indicate important changes in the form such as twists or folds only when necessary.

Anyone here with any experience on vilppu figure drawing book, when does it stop being absolute shit?

I'm on page 90/173 and so far it has been a whole bunch of "draw the rest of the owl"

He's like "an cylinder is a ellipse with two lines :) HERE'S 8 PAGES OF EXAMPLES THAT BARELY HAVE A VISIBLE CYLINDER IN THEM"

Or how he spends 2 pages of actually talking about boxes and how they can be used to draw torsos, shows 8 pages of examples, just to never use it again in any of his other examples.

Is this the bottom of the barrel when it comes to figure drawing books?

>Or how he spends 2 pages of actually talking about boxes and how they can be used to draw torsos, shows 8 pages of examples, just to never use it again in any of his other examples.
That's because he assumes you already mastered the concepts. If you have problems with boxy construction you reread the existing information.

I would say I'm pretty decent with box construction(not the best but it gets there), the problem is that he doesn't use it, so why should I?
He never goes over that, he never even mentions if, he shows it and throws it away immediately

The highest extent of box use he does is on knees and elbows (maybe MAYBE, pelvis too on a good day)

I'm not even a big fan of box constructions because they feel awful for certain contortions and poses, and it doesn't help that he never uses it either so it feels pointless to hit my head against the wall for nothing

A lot of my time with this book was spend largely on me trying to decipher what the hell was I supposed to do

>> No.6915610

>>6915527
I think you're doing fine so far.
Vilppu's approach is about analysing form, using circles, then boxes and then cylinders, the ribcage isn't a circle, but its somewhat close, so we use a circle to get started. However there's an issue, a circle has no sides, we need a back and a front and sides to describe and set landmarks. That's where the box comes in, its a very stiff and much less forgiving form than a circle, so it forces you to set with and height as well as position and direction of the edges, we can use that to determine anatomical landmarks like the clavicle and bottom ribs.
The point of the exercise isn't necessarily to draw a box as the torso, but to see the box within torsos to better help you understand how to draw it.

Looks like you're learning, so just embrace it. I don't understand how people can hate boxes so much. It's just more practice if anything. If you want to place your figures in any kind of space you'll need to know how to draw boxes anyways. basic 3d shapes are great for understanding form, and face changes. At the end of the day, it's probably better that you are frustrated, if you listen to Huberman, he says our brains become more plastic when we are frustrated.

On another note, how the fuck do professional artists render in such great detail without wanting to kill themselves?

Is there any advice for someone who is drawing too slowly for figure drawing? I find by the time I get my measurements done and I have a very basic figure most scrawled out, I'm out of time (if I've managed to get the entire figure in) - and that's for five minute studies.
Should I just forgo accuracy in the quicker figure studies, or is this something I need to force myself to get quicker at?

>> No.6927214

>>6927201
You can do both, try doing a quick study, then do a slower one. Try some warm up exercises before your next session. Scrap paper scribble down some straight lines, s curves and some c curves, do some square and boxes and ellipses. Doesn't have to be long, but over time it could help with speed / accuracy.

Put a little more effort into it today. A gesture session really does get you in the right mindset. I avoided it for so long because I used to have a really shitty mindset that my one minute gestures needed to be "good" and if I was embarrassed by my ability at something I'd just avoid doing it. But it's fun to have an exercise that's just experimental and fun where you can play around and see what happens with no regrets.

Gestures are an interesting idea but I will never understand why people always shill them as the most basic thing.

Every few months this board discovers a teacher, and when crabs don't learn from them properly by drawing a ton they demote them to meme status. The next big thing on this board is "painting" and when miserable fuckers don't bother doing it for more than 30 minutes a day, they'll start calling painting a meme.
Vilppu used to be worshipped like a pagan god on here, now people treat him like they treated loomis back then, (and now, despite loomis being a fine teacher unless you've literally never picked up a pencil before)

A cautious tale from one beg to another, Hardly any teachers are "memes" if you dedicate to learning from them hard enough. Literally the only exception is draw-a-box and even then you could probably get gains from there. Just watch out when content is too challenging for your level, and pace yourself accordingly.
Also here are some 1 minute poses i did.
