to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help.

Someday I wish to be able to draw (and paint) well enough to make a living off of it. Particularly I would like to paint stained glass, though that is likely too specific of a niche to aim for. So the things I am hoping to focus on in order are proportions and a bit of anatomy and proportion (hence studying Bridgman), heads and faces, at which point I think I should be ready to start practicing rendering, clothes, and lastly color.

Haven't been drawing for about a week or so, my painting and drawing abilities degraded significantly, figures got stiff, value control got really sloppy, and lineweight control with my dip pen got horrible.
So I have punished myself with the default hard round brush and copied 7 pages of Bridgman in one sitting. The hand hurts, but it was a joyful experience in a way.
I am going to do some painting studies on statues before bed.

I didn't have much time today but I was able to do a bit of practice...my ability to curve lines seems to be improving but my shapes still look really messy and flat like in many cases.

I am planning on reading Drawing from the Right Side of the Brain soon, but I think the main issue with me, and a lot of other beginner artists, is a lack of direction due to the contradictory advice people tend to give.

The main issue I also have is when I try to draw character eyes, they always never look right, they look flat and lifeless.

Regardless, I am gonna keep trying for at least a month to see if I do make a bit of progress, I should have more free time for this later in the week.

If your goal is to draw people doing everyday things then I don't think you really need to worry about drawing from imagination very much. I would keep grinding the poses, and if you're having trouble with proportions, it doesn't hurt to break out the ruler every once in a while. Make sure the proportions match up to the reference, and then redraw it again this time eyeballing it as close as possible.

I've been going "I'm gonna do it tomorrow" for over half a year now and i drew maybe like five times during that whole time while constantly anxiously thinking about doing it every day without a fail.

I tried using the tools on my phone and finger to flesh it out more than I felt comfortable with putting on paper without refs. Black’s the panel, the little gem in the middle, and the chair the big bad is sitting in. Red’s the two robots getting blown back, the mc crouching down and plugging her ears and the big bad in the chair. Blue is all the glass flying everywhere

I got some new markers at a store in Osaka on the trip and while the bile bots and space bandit came out okay, the Doctor got all fucked up with the Hot Space pants. I was going for a rather obvious nod to the antagonist of Anpanman, mostly since I’ve seen this dude everywhere on this trip, but I also wanted to try my new markers out and the ‘grey’ skin was fucked too. Anyway they bled through the pages and ruined the ones behind them so I won’t be using these for any pagework. Just to make an idea of what the characters are supposed to look like all drawn out

I’m not spending a super amount of time on their designs since in like three, four pages the MC’s gonna wake up and we’re not gonna see these guys ever again

It takes time and practice to sink in. Fortunately you don't need super rigorous training to be able to use it. You just memorize a few rules and tricks for understanding the positions of a few key elements and how they'll affect what you're drawing. Tons of free resources online to help you. And finding a quick perspective grid in a photo like this is good practice. You can even try sketching stuff into the photo along with the perspective to get a better feel for the space.

DAB "rough perspective"

It's another tedious exercise. I only do a max of 20 minutes a day so I don't burn out. Actually on some days it's easier to do stuff like this than to "actually draw", because there's no pressure, you basically just follow instructions. But on other days it's kind of just a bore.

True. I don't think its the sources that are the issue. I've done all the good ones and i did do inherit some knowledge from them. Like Loomis and Keys to drawing. The issue is that i always fizzle out and drop out of them not even 1/4th the way through so even though i've started many of the well-regarded courses i haven't learnt that much from any of them.
I also did the Brent Evinston gesture drawing course but i didn't even get to the actual drawing part of that one. Most i did were the action lines.

I don't think it's an issue of you being incapable of learning, because you aren't complete shit. But it's a problem of your character. I don't know how old you are, but people who become good at some point are usually pretty full of themselves to the point where they are super blind to how bad they are, but that's what keeps them going. They feel like they are the shit, and they want to prove that they are the shit.

I used to draw like shit and I thought I was the best in the world, or if not best in the world, I was going to be. That's how cocky I was. And I kinda still am, even though I know I'm objectively not the best (not even close). Sure, I had a big dip in my confidence when I was somewhere in between 25-28 when I realized I'm not that good, but I was down for a second and then I bit the bullet and start to work my ass of to not be shit.

If this makes any sense. Imo. you just need to be cocky and believe in yourself truly. But if that's not something you have, then I don't know what to do. :D

Usually either out of anxiety or my mind and my body simply just locking up and telling me "What the fucks the point"? And just making me look back at my phone again or just stimming and staring at a wall.

Legitimately NOTHING has worked. I felt better for a week and then nothing. This has gone back all the way since I was a teenager too. I had thyroid problems that got fixed, but this never got any better.
I don't know how to get the motivation to do anything. Even when I do happen to try my hardest in doing something, it's always half as good or even just 2% as good as anybody else doing the same thing, because me being purely retarded and unable to learn or focus. Reading all this: 100% watch the video I linked. Really do, it can change your life completely.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xjEFo3a1AnI

>My guest this episode is Chris Palmer, M.D., a board-certified psychiatrist and assistant professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. He explains the important connection between nutrition, metabolism and mental health and his pioneering work using the ketogenic diet to successfully treat patients with various mental illnesses, including depression and schizophrenia. Dr. Palmer explains how the ketogenic diet is an evidenced-based treatment for epilepsy, mimics the fasted state and can offset the cognitive decline in Alzheimer’s. He describes the key roles of mitochondria in mental health, how certain conditions likely arise from mitochondrial dysfunction, and how low-carbohydrate diets increase mitochondrial turnover to improve mental health. He also explains how low-carbohydrate diets positively impact the gut microbiome and weight loss, important risk factors for mitochondrial health such as marijuana and alcohol, and the best way to increase circulating ketones depending on individual needs. We also cover how a ketogenic diet impacts mood, sleep, and fertility. Dr. Palmer’s work stands as a revolutionary approach to mental health and disease that, given the prevalence of mental health challenges, should be of interest to people of all backgrounds and ages.

I've been in psychosis, I've had daily panic attacks, I have ADHD, autism, weird parasomnias, arthritis, etc. All cured with this. Why? Because it's all caused by mitochondrial dysfcuntion. And you seem like an other fellow with similar problems. Watch the video. It's long, but it can cure you. Dude has put multiple drug resistant schizophrenias into remission for example.

So I decided to follow the Burne Hogarth Figure Drawing book...I basically just kinda studied the drawings he showed on each page the best I could...

Some of the results I was somewhat "Oh, this doesn't look too bad", but for others I am like "How come I can't make this look right? Why does it look so flat/symbol like?", I dunno what I am doing still much of the time And I seem to struggle a lot with creating the curves of arms, like my curves never seem to curve properly and always look too wide or narrow.

Would appreciate some critiques but please have them be useful, and I'm sure I'll be told to go do something else.

Yup, because like epilepsy, it's caused by mitochondrial dysfunction:

https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0149763414002887

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33221354/

Your brains mitochondria are dysfunctional > they have a hard time producing ATP from glucose, but ketones are more easier to use, so once you start feeding them ketones, it restores your brains energy production > mental health issue gone.

In the vidya Chris Palmer explains how the ketogenic diet has been studied for +100 years and is an evidence based treatment for epilepsy. And funnily enough, all old antipsychotic medicine are epilepsy drugs. Why? Same cause.

you seem quite new, and it doesn't feel fair for me to draw over your work yet, but i hope you get something out of this. Main thing you need to work on is proportion, which Hogarth conveniently never covers. I know you implied you didn't want to switch to something else, but I think you could get a lot out of combining multiple figure drawing books together. I like Loomis (Figure drawing for all it's worth) and Bridgman a lot.

Also, to practice figure drawing, you need to do a massive amount of observational drawing. Get on quickposes.com and do that every day for an hour, 5-10 minute poses. When you exhaust the images there, buy photo packs from grafit studio or some other seller and draw from those

It's hard to do. You need to watch all of it.

But TL;DR: eat less than 20 grams of carb per day. Eat lots of fat - atleast 75% of your calories should come from fat (keep in mind fat gram = 9 kcal). And eat the normal amount of protein you normally eat.

Once your body is depleted of glucose, you will start shifting into ketosis. And the shifting period at first will feel awful. And it can last up to two weeks. But after you are ketoadapted, you will unlock your brain. I didn't know my brain can work this well, nor that I could live mental health issue free. But here we are.

ok so i tried a different approach.
instead of sitting there miticulously trying to recreate the skulls in loomis' book with utmost fidelity as previously>>6857699
i just now sat down, plugged the tablet in, opened the program, didnt look at the book for a second today, and constructed a skull as loomis says. 3 minutes.
why didnt i do this before.
so i have no idea how to draw the features, loomis says not to worry about it for now. BUT THEN ON THE NEXT PAGE he asks of you to construct a proper jaw and cheekbones. how am i supposed to do that. thats what had me caught up for hours and hours of frustration last time.
with this skull the jaw is elongated outwards, i know, ill make it better with the next one. but i cant draw cheekbones and a jaw and eye sockets like loomis does in his book.

It's the exact opposite. People lose a fuckload of weight, sometimes alarming amounts. People gain weight so easily nowdays due to insulin resistance, and once you hop on a diet which doesn't spike your insulin like a carb rich diet, you lose weight like a motherfucker even if you eat more calories than you used to - but usually you don't, because fat and protein are super satiating compared to carbs.

Nothing puts me off drawing more than the commonly put forward idea that you need two thousand hours in it to get good.

That's such a major timeframe that i might as well do it tomorrow or next week. I dont wanna chisel away at a mountain, that's such a discouraging picture. I gym thrice a week because i dont have an idea that ill be strong once ive been there a thousand times and anything beforehand barely even mattered. I just go there, put on some music, do my sets, and get some tasty snack afterwards.
For some reason i can't do the same with drawing. Been thinking about it daily for the last three years but ive done probably less than 50hours of actual work since then. Shit is fucked.

Take consideration for what 'would be nice if it happened' vs what you're willing to grit your teeth and make the necessary sacrifices to attain. Truth is, I don't really want a million dollars. Not in the same way that I want to get better at drawing. If you want something you gotta work for it.

this one needs a lot of work: the flowers are flat (you dont have to paint EVERY petal, just enough to give illusion of plasticity) and the dudes shirt is too dark. Even 100% black clothes in sunny days have visible folds and darker and brighter spots. the flying petals are cool, but again not rendered enough to instantly tell what we are looking at. Think about your line weight a bit harder. Is your goal to force people's eyes into the crook between the delt amd tricep/bicep? Also, feels very jarring having his body be extremely lean with an absolute ton of forms and features depicted and then going to the hands / head / forearm. They look unfinished when compared. Anatomy looks good for the most part.

Say I have a free ride for whatever in university, is industrial design worth anything? For context I'm already a 31yo boomer and have everything I'll need school and career wise, but a family member did some paperwork and gave me their GI bill which apparently just pays you to go to school. Like I assume everything art related is going to be digital centric, but I enjoy Sketching on paper in books. My goal would just be to lrn2draw in an academic setting, probably the university that would fit best would also be decent for networking if need be. Industrial design would do nothing for my career path and has nothing to do with my existing body of academic expertise, but I have been psyopped by cool mechanical drawings.
