>What tablets does /dtg/ use?
https://strawpoll.com/polls/NoZrLOmrDn3

>General guidelines when picking a tablet:
- All of the recommended models are part of large lines with multiple sizes/generations available. Buy the biggest/newest in your budget. Medium-Large pen tablets or 16-24" display tablets are considered the sweet spot by most artists.
- If you don't see a tablet you're interested in listed, ask about it. This isn't a definitive list, just one to give you an idea where to start looking.
- Avoid Chinese tablets 4+ years old or made by literally who brands like gaomon, ugee, parblo, etc. They were generally dogshit, and the reason Wacom had a monopoly for so many years. Newer models from huion and xp-pen are much better.
- Wacom is still the industry standard, but they're overpriced. Chinese brands have mostly caught up in the past few years and will provide a near identical user experience for a fraction of the price.

Personally if I were in your shoes though, I'd just get the 22 plus and an older ipad instead though. the m2 won't benefit drawing in any way, and ipads aren't actually very good drawing tablets compared to ones purpose built with art in mind.

fuuck, you make me doubt bro. Have you used one of the two?
For me what is a must is not so much portability but the use cases.
>Kamvas (only draw/sculpt, but with steroids)
-Can make complex work (screen/pc programs)
-Ergonomic (screen)
-Use photoshop, 3d etc.(pc)
>Ipad (Mini ""laptop""/more use cases)
-Is kinda mini laptop (no need pc)
-Best drawing feel/exp "similar" to wacom(what i heard, idk if it's copium)
-I can use it like a notebook to study, edit video.

I heard Adam Duff and some other pro artists that the Ipad in itself is enjoyable to use and by that, they draw more. idk

I'm making a mess, sorry, I know it's a big invesment (and bigger cosidering where I live), so because that, I want to make the best choice.

Considering the latest Ipad is not because I consider is better but, is beacuse it's new, it would last me more time.
I'm afraid of buying refurbished.

No, not at all. Without a screen protector, you have a slippery glass screen with a relatively blunt tipped stylus. With a matte screen protector (which wear down and feel waxy pretty quickly with consistent use) they feel decent, but still not as good. I've only tried paperlike and elecom, but I'm about due to replace mine again and might give bersem a try since it's $8 for 2.

I still like my ipad and sketch with it on my couch almost every night, but I don't like it for anything more serious than that, and am considering selling it for either a samsung tab ultra, or kamvas studio 16 if I can find one cheaper than $1700.

Honestly I have no clue what they get down to because I've never looked. Are you opposed to 2nd hand?
Thinking about it more, the size probably isn't that bad, especially if it's basically a tab s6 lite or nothing for months. My first tablet with a screen was an iPad 3 which was even smaller and I made do with it for a long time. I've just gotten used to using bigger screens and remember how happy I was to get upgrade to them, so I have a hard time recommending anything small.

>> No.6861500

I picked mine up from eBay for like $150, and depending if you like your tablets having "character" you can probably scoop one up for cheaper. Most probably won't have the pen, so expect another 20 for a third-party replacement (or 50 for OEM).
I haven't had it for very long but I'm already drawing more with it because of the portable nature of it. Mind you, I doubt it would be particularly good for very elaborate drawings; it's an older tablet and it definitely shows in its performance with things like Kuroba being stuttery messes.

You don't have to get a display for anything, there's functionally no difference. The difference is only in how they work for you. I hate pen tablets and can't use them for shit, while I love display tablets and can use them as well as I would paper. Some people are the exact opposite.

Yeah I bought a 2020 S6 Lite and it's struggling to run just about anything smoothly. Kuroba is choppy when scrolling. It's not bad, mind you, and I've had a good time with simpler projects like sketches with a few layers and screen size canvas on Infinite Pain, but I wouldn't do anything bigger than that.
Though, for $100 on eBay, I still think it was a good deal. I wouldn't buy it new.

>>6862984

While I don't do sculpting, I used a small screen less for the longest time and did good work with it. I prefer my screened 24 inch, and screened tablets do make you faster, as you can see 1-to-1 where your marks will have an influence rather than having to translate the through hand-eye coordination, but they don't necessarily make you better. Some would argue that size of the tablet has a more profound impact than whether or not it's screen-enabled, and I think there's merit to this argument (if my endeavors with drawing on my small phone is any indication)

guess i'll ask here after realizing the deal with the 2 thread dynamic:

hey guys for any one the tablet owners here, has the Android environment actually caught up to iPadOS or are we still limited to 1+ app per niche still?
i know that CSP is fully supported, then Infinite Painter and others for Procreate alternatives, etc but there's no Adobe (albeit limited, but i've used it and it gets you out of an emergency) suite apps or newer stuff coming out like Procreate Dreams
is committing to a Tab+ or Ultra really a good idea if you need an all-in-one device or are iPad Pros just better overall, im interested in the redesigns expected early 2024

>> No.6875488

You have a few options on each now I'd say. Depending on if you're okay with a subscription, csp obviously as you mentioned for either.
ios, procreate is still typically the go to, but you also have infinite painter and artstudio
android you have infinite painter, hipaint, krita, medibang, and ibis paint

may be some I missed for either device, but those are the ones I've heard of people actually using.

For animation, I have no clue because I don't do animation at all.

Hey anons, could really use some advice right now.
I've been happily using my Cintiq 13HD up to now (which I know is ancient by this point) but it's finally looking like that dumb design flawed port might be broken.
I don't mind shelling out some money for a good tablet. Actually previously I was looking at buying an ipad pro and was going to in a month or so, but I still need a proper tablet as I need access to specific animation software (hopefully this might change in the coming years, but I digress).

I'm a little lost as to current tablets as it's been a long time since I've bought one. I was researching the current cintiq lineup last night and I feel rather underwhelmed? The closest thing to a replacement for my 13HD seems to be a 16 but I really hate the lack of physical buttons and I've heard bad things about it's color gambit.

What are the decent, popular mid range tablets that people like nowadays? I am open to other brands but I have 0 experience with them so I'm unsure of their quality (also not crazy on having a rechargable pen). If going with other brands I would really like to have physical buttons as well.
Would I be insane just buying a 13HD again for cheap or trying to somehow fix the port on my own one and invest in an expensive tablet in a few months instead?

Any advice appreciated, thank you in advance.

you don't actually wanna leave it plugged in all the time if you can avoid it. when you leave tech plugged in it just keeps letting the battery drain a little then charging it back to 100%, which is more wear than consistent charge-drain cycles consistent with regular use and keeping the battery between like 25-85%. same as your phone, rather than leaving it plugged in overnight it's better to just plug it in for an hour or a couple hours where possible to recharge without idling at 100 for too long (it's also fine to have it plugged in while in use). you don't really want to turn it all the way off more than you have to, it isn't gonna kill anything outright but modern devices aren't really optimized around that kind of use and other anon is right that it'll tend to cause more strain over time.

>> No.6885225

>>6885212
fwiw don't become like paranoid about optimizing battery usage/charges or anything, modern batteries are resilient, but there's a reason a lot of flagship phones nowadays have a feature to cap charge around 80-90%. batteries are naturally more sensitive to strain at the extremes: very low charge or flatlining is bad for your battery, and playing flappy bird with charge levels above 90% is also more intensive than similar fluctuations closer to the median range.

It works alright. There are some limitations with this setup. Due to the arm, I can't tilt the tablet more than like 45-60 from vertical (eg no horizontal setup), and based on where I have my base, I'm limited to where I can position the tablet.
So it works but some experimentation is required. I might try putting the tablet stand back on it, now that I don't have to worry about monitor stand bases getting in the way.

I've had monitor tablets in that range, from a 13" Wacom HD screen tablet to 22" XP Pen and Huion.

As of now, I've settled for a 15.6 Artist Pro which I find to be the right size for me. The larger tablets are nice because you have a lot of space, especially if UI gets in the way with layers, toolbars, etc. Still, I found 20"+ to be too much for me and my drawing style. Not only that but if you use their included stands and not a vesa monitor arm, then you will lose a ton of desk real estate which can get quite annoying.

I did my tests around 2017 or 18 tho, when these large screens were all non-etched, or if they had a paper-like texture it had to be done with a screen protector that you had to apply yourself. And they were just slowly coming up with battery-less pens as well, so for some you had to charge them every so often. At first I really did not mind the glossy, ice-skatey feeling but there's just something nice about paper-like. Ultimately, I think it's better. A (coarse) screen-protector will do fine as well.

The tablet I've settled for, brought everything together, infinite pen battery, great screen texture, good middle ground for size and more than enough hotkeys plus radial menu. Plus I got it at a great price. I see it retails for 400 bucks now, I got mine at 250 in 2018 or so.

Gui doesn't matter honestly, if I really want Zen and no clutter, I hit Tab or whatever equivalent for your program to hide all ui elements and then you can just focus on drawing. Photoshop has two such fullscreen/distraction free modes, I'm sure most other programs have that as well. And whether it's a smaller or larger size screen tablet, I'd always look for errors on my main monitor, the one with the best color accuracy etc. I believe you can setup PS in such a way that it projects the fully zoomed out project on your main screen, while you work on detail(s) on your screen tablet (picrel).

Been pondering this question for a while, hopefully someone has some tips or experience.

I have a crappy stand that came with my tablet and it only has one angle and no vesa mount for a monitor arm -> I'm often in shrimp posture while drawing and I can't really access my keyboard.

Anyway, what I need is a good tablet or notebook type holder with vesa screws. Any tips on what to get? I'm pretty sure a laptop holder won't cut it, since they only offer one small edge on the bottom for support and I don't know yet at which angle I will be drawing. I'd imagine tablet slightly hovering above desk, varying between almost upright and lying (almost) flat, depending on how I sit.

I really can't find many promising results. Might just buy this piece of crap and hope for the best..
