**Strive for quantity AND quality.**

Anime Studying:
>Copy anime references exactly and draw them from memory. Use illustrations, screenshots, anime figures, 3D models, etc.
>Don’t copy recklessly. Use construction, color theory, and other fundamental concepts to rehearse a drawing process that you can later easily manipulate for original artwork.
>Post all of your anime studies. Post even when you’re told not to. Create an art community that actually draws and improves together instead of just talking about it.
>Number your attempts and link to your previous posts.
>Critiquers should lead by example by posting their studies.

General Anime Style Discussion:
>Questions about achieving certain styles/techniques/compositions etc.
>Drawing methods, study habits, resources, tutorials, tools, software, etc
>Be specific and try to post a sample of your study attempts before asking for help.

**Draw copies from good anime styled references to mindfully up our mileage, internalize appealing aesthetics, and learn from each other’s processes and knowledge.**

Hi,

Is Konosuba an OK anime to copy, for a total beginner?
I'm asking since the quality is all over the place, with proportions and all that constantly changing.
Or should I start with a more grounded show?

Also should I be coloring and shading from the start or just do quick line work for now?

>> No.6841838

>>6841831
You should just study whatever you find appealing, its all stylization which is based on the same principles.

Also try to color, maybe not everything but at least a few. And don‘t go ham with that either. Just roughly. No one cares if your studies look good or not its about what you take away from it.

Yes, I really like the style, but I'm afraid that I won't learn much besides how to draw their faces. The other official art either isn't much better or is in completely different style.

So I was thinking of creating simple 3d models for each character and using them as a reference along the screencaps, like this. So that I can have more consistent proportions (no I don't plan to trace the model, since I know that it wont help me learn).
It also looks like it would be good for learning shading.

Does anybody know of any software besides Design Doll to do that? The free version doesn't let me load saved dolls, and I can't customize the proportions as much as I'd like.
Maybe Blender or something like that?

What's the secret to a cool and unique style? The one I have right now I feel is just generally appealing and clean, which is good for commissions and the like, but not for "the soul" I guess. Besides just sketching a ton and having a handle on the fundamentals, is it really just being more loose and experimental? Those crazy styles from sub-200 follower east asian artists (pic rel) are pretty enviable, and even the ones that end up popular still keep that uniqueness to them.

These look pretty stiff. Have you considered doing more gesture drawing?
On the one with the two girls you drew one calf of the girl on the left asymetrical to other leg's calf. Like it connects higher and bumps out abruptly instead of just mirroring the other one. Also you like do this thing where you use too many straight lines for the back of the arm and clothes in general, as well as repeating similarly sized shapes for you skirt and hair shapes right next to each other.

>> No.6845676

>>6842558
By the higher and lower wrist thing I basically meant that the forearms of the girl on the left looks pretty weird because pose looking like its fairly neutral, yet the hands being in different heights implies there would be a significant tilting of the body, which doesn't look to be the case here. The forearms and upper arms being different lengths from the one other side doesn't help either. I also notice you tend to always draw clothing too stiff and flat, most prominent in the waist band (which should be slightly more curved to show the ellipse), and same for the skirt and sleeves too. All these I wrote in the notes.
TL;DR: A lot of awkward parts but... keep it up!

-change the lineart color to darker, bit more saturated ver of hair color
-for the shadow make the color a bit lighter than lineart
-for the shape of the shadow, think of it 3 dimensionally and u will end up with a v shape
-blend in the flat color. put down a little bit then use eyedropper to blend it in smooth, repeat
-thin out the edge of the shadow, but to make sure the shape is readable, put a bit of a dark border around it (compare the top image to the bottom, bottom is more flat)
-use the warm colors as highlights and add the cool colors in the shadow, on the side that faces away from the light source

What do you guys think about shading in greyscale and adding color later? Is there any cons to this method?
I personally have never used it, always starting and shading with colors; people say it is easier to start with grayscale, because they don’t have to think about values and hues at the same time, but is that really that big of a deal? I feel like using the grayscale method just results in a de-saturated looking final result. I think I prefer having vibrant colors, and I’m not sure the grayscale method can provide that.

Where can i find good resources to draw those super stylized anime expressions?

>>6852422
It's never too late, it just takes lot of time and effort. "drawing on the right side of your brain" is mostly usless book, it teaches you how to draw what you see instead of what you think to see but it's also filled with lot of nonsense. You can already start drawing what you want to draw, remind that your results will not be great at first. Stick to life drawing, get your head around perspective, basic forms and human proportions. In short, just draw. If you like it you will get better in no time.

Don't listen to him, it depends on the series. Some anime adaptations are supervised and/or made by artists who are vastly more skilled than the author of the source material, or that at least have a style that you find more appealing. It also depends on what you're copying, in the sense that key frames and still shots have a lot of thought behind them as opposed to random inbetween frames.

Two literal whos whose only merit is copying a foreing style, a drop in an ocean compared to the number of Japanese artists with profound and longlasting global impact in art, hell we're in /asg/ not chinese crap general, for starters. My point stands in that krenz is no authority in the topic, or as much as an authority as any other random non Japanese artist with a faux anime style, and the only reason he's featured in the OP is because him or some other dog eating subhuman kidnapped the general.

Asg is a study thread for beginners learning how to draw and the rare int doing some studies on the side, art generals usually have a higher median skill level due to them not being focused on studies. Mid level artists are good enough to not need studies be the only thing they make so they have less incentive to post in study threads.
That's why generals like the female, male threads, salt, etc have higher quality pieces. Pretty much once you graduate from only doing studies you move onto original pieces in generals.
