If you are a /beg/inner or /int/ermediate in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.
Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the drawthread with fundamental exercises.

>TRY TO BE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK.
When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction
to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help.
When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

I'm very curious. I was told on another board I scratched/chicken scratched. I'd like some /ic/ perspective. I admit I was very defiant when told that because I disagree on what chicken scratching looks like. However I didn't completely reject the advice and decided maybe my lines could be better and am working on them after doing this drawing.
Do you think I scratched ic? In my eyes, I think they saw my sketch as scratchy. But I think my bold lines are quite confident. At worst, I think some of the lines are aimless or lack a clear purpose or are random, but not necessarily scratch.
I drew it out in a very loose way and then outlined it, so maybe in that sense it's scratch? Let's settle this for good.

There's no use arguing what is and isn't art. This thread is about sharing our practices and giving/receiving feedback either related to technique or composition. Personal tastes shouldn't affect that, and if it does you're better of just ignoring it.

For paint-anon, no offense but your work looks like it was done by a child. Maybe that's okay for you and how you want it to look, but it's kind of hard to look at and take seriously. If you could improve your representational accuracy (ie. make a tree look like a tree and not a series of brown smears) That can go a long way to giving your art more impact and presence, thereby imparting your intended feelings. Maybe you're eager to work on full pieces, but do give some thought to focusing in on practicing individual things.

Posemaniacs is a good resource for gesture. they use 3D models so you can get some weird angles and can look a little stiff. but it's totally free with no account needed and you change the interval for how long you have to draw and pause whenever you like.

Line of Action is another site I like to use although you need to make an account to use it and you're only allowed to do a set of 10 2-minute gestures if you don't buy a subscription. Still a good daily practice resource if you want real human photographs doing interesting poses.

Ideas are cheap. It's easy to create art to 'say something' it's difficult to create art to say something and look good.

You're putting yourself on a high horse but reality is what you're doing is so much lower effort than these coomer heads.

Develop your fundamentals more so you can create art that actually looks good and evokes something.

I didn't time it, but I feel like I didn't take long enough. Around 20 minutes I would say. A bit tired and impatient today, but I guess mileage is still mileage.

The ass turned flat, I guess partly because I don't know how to render properly. One of these days I'll practice that in a study-study way, but now I'm just glad I could draw a nude woman to finish off the day. Very therapeutic.

I'm still trying to understand how to properly 'study'. I was told a legitimate method of studying is finding something you like then copying it. I searched pencil drawing on pinterest that I liked and tried to copy the style. I tried to apply my draftmanskip skills I learned to properly draw from reference. I think I drew it pretty accurate and practiced my observation/ reference drawing skills well, however I don't feel I learned anything. Is this worth just spamming for drawings I like? Or is this worthless and barely even a study? It was fairly quick.
The reference: https://pin.it/aHIPMv3

>> No.6831345

>>6831338
If you think you've understood the style, try to apply it. Take a photo reference and recreate it using that style. or take this same image and draw what you think it looks like from the front. A study is a good first step in order to step into the shoes of an artist and try to understand what they were thinking when making the decisions of a drawing, but then you have to see what you can do with it. Play with it, experiment. That's what's going to make the difference between mindlessly copying and truly internalizing the lesson within.

this is exactly why you do memory drawings. After you copy something, put away the reference and your study, then redraw it from memory. If you can't do it, try copying just a smaller portion of the reference

If you just mindlessly copy, everything you studied will slip from your mind

nta but as a fast drawer myself its just experience drawing fast and loose instead of always trying to make things super perfect and taking an eternity to get stuff down on paper

for example i drew this >>6830830
in 20 max 30min during my 1h lunch break using a quick ref for the pose, it shows its done quick and loose and has plenty of flaws, which also shows how creating the impression of something is good enough to create an image in peoples minds and that you can do fast, and that is part of the trick to getting things down quick on the canvas: disregard perfection embrace impressionism
all the bells and whistles you can add later if you want an example i enjoy of this is seeing phillipe Druillet mogg ameritard artists here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8182YrAbfF4&t=2s&ab_channel=fredericabernkastel
he gets so much down because he disregards detail and goes for the impression and general form

btw being fast isnt something inherently good but it is something you just practise by having tight timings and ofc the better you get overall the easier it is to get things down fast since you need less work to get things correct or "close enough" and it isnt any metric of real skill or merit but just a charateristic of the artist no need to worry about it

I'm starting again pretty much from zero; not sure where I'm going but for now I just want to be able to confidently (and quickly) transfer the major forms of anything I see onto paper, with correct proportions and clean lines.

Left in all my mistakes here just to give an idea of where I'm at. Mostly I'm frustrated because of how slow I draw; just these two mannequins took two hours. Just wish I could draw more stuff in the time that I have.

When you say generic, I'm assuming you mean the expression and overall facial structure/features (or lack thereof)?

Well technically if you are making a living off your art, you are by definition a "professional", even if you have "beg" skills...you wont know.
Your skill is judged by a bunch of crabs and no draws on this board. They will tell you.

Oh yeah? Well I just masturbated to completion using your art as a visual aid and there’s nothing you can do about it. Yes, really. Those floating eyeballs(?) can represent oviposition, eggs being fertilized, or good old fashioned tits and ass. Not the easiest fap, but I did it.
>Why would you —
To prove a point.
>I don’t believe you. This can’t be possible, you—
Welcome to 4chan.
>But it’s not meant to be erotic, so it doesn’t count as p—
Too bad. Your art is now porn. Worse, it’s weird niche porn, like wonder bread and deforestation or bathroom tiles.
>But I’m not like all the wannabe coom artists who —
No, you’re even more accomplished. Thanks to me, more people have nutted to your art than have nutted to the art of 90% of all coom artists on this board. Probably even more. You’ve beaten them all. Your art has the coom high score.

Does that lower the value of your art? Did that retroactively suck the value and authenticity out of the earnest effort you put into creating something? No. Not remotely. It’s absurd to even consider that. If anything, it’s got more significance since it could elicit such a visceral reaction, to make somebody feel and experience something — anything —beyond merely the rods and cones of the eye detecting color and value. So what if someone finds it titillating? Good, they felt something. The only thing that devalues art is if it’s a soulless product or propaganda. If you put genuine effort into it as sincere expression, it doesn’t fucking matter whether it’s coom or a still life or fighting stick figures. If you draw erotica, then that’s perfectly valid artistic expression, as long as it’s a genuine effort. Earnest. If you put a little soul into it, breathed a little life into it. That’s where art derives value. The creative human element fighting against entropy. You’ve got a whore/Madonna complex with art, anon. I recommend you get over that.

I still have to learn how to draw hair too. Your study looks like you’re doing what you should be doing, so good job! Your accuracy is good enough and you’re not symbol drawing, so you know how to see somewhat, which is better than most at day 17. That’s very important, because step 0 is being able to draw what you actually see instead of what you think you see. If you feel like you need more help with that, read Keys To Drawing, or Drawing On The Right Side of the Brain, or go through Brent Eviction’s beginner course. Some of your drawing is a little flat. Look at her sleeves and cuffs, for example. I recommend you learn to think in terms of spheres and cylinders rather than circles and rectangles. Go through the Vilppu Drawing Manual and/or How To Draw Comics The Marvel Way. They’ll teach you the basics of gesture and figure construction/how to draw in 3d. Keep going! You’re definitely gonna make it. Again, good job, Anon.

If you want to redraw Archie, consider that a full page would be about 17x12" during the Silver Age, give or take a half inch. So each individual panel should be around 5.5" in height. That will make drawing Archie, Betty, Veronica, Jughead, that much more fluid.

Some other artists like Carl Barks used boards that were up to 20x30", but that's a lesson for another time.

Creativity is actually connectivity. Novel connections and combinations that, when combined, mutate and take on a life of their own. Like a sperm and egg cell fusing to create something new. It’s not appearing out of nothing. A jazz riff still uses the same 12 notes as every other bit of western music. It’s the combination that’s unique. /blogpost

I think you are symbol drawing, and don’t know how to see yet. The first step to being able to draw — before how to hold a pencil, make lines, fell the form — is to learn how to see. Step zero is being able to draw what you actually see and not what your brain thinks it sees. I recommend Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain, or Keys to Drawing, or Brent Eviston’s beginner course. Those will teach you to see. Then you can do the Villa Drawing Method or Drawabox or whatever your lil heart desires.
>good enough for a comic
As far as that goes, the main thing in a comic is the story, look at ONE’s manga. Absolute beg art, but he has two things going for him:
1. Story
2. SOVL
The most important thing is the story and characters. The art is secondary. In fact, there are rumors of books that apparently don’t even have pictures at all.
So the answer to that question is yes and no.
>is this good enough for a comic with a damn good story and characters, where the art isn’t the point?
Yes. It’s better than ONE could do when he started, and maybe even better than he can do now.
>is this good enough for a graphic novel where the art has to carry the project?
No.

this is a big compliment, thank you. I'm glad i'm starting to get over that hurdle

I just started the line art of the drawing today, I know it's just a copy but i'm really happy with how it's turning out so far, especially with me only being on Day 18 of learning

also I know it's probably silly to worry about this early on in my drawing lifespan, but is it weird that sometimes I worry if me doing copies like this isn't actually making me improve at drawing, just at copying from other people? I know a lot of big and successful artists say copying is one of the best tools to learn, but it still feels kind of...dirty? wrong?

Same anon here. Am I doing these too fast? I feel somewhat good about this but also unsatisfied. I feel like I do them too quickly but I also feel like it's really the best I can do or that I feel aimless on what to do? I feel like when drawing this I started off stylized but tried to shade in a more realistic manner which makes it look a bit odd or contrasting. Used a blending stick which I'm still learning how to use.
Some parts look alright with how I did it... but other parts look completely confused on where the lighting is exactly coming from. I feel like I wasn't sure how to do it.
Critique it I guess or suggest the steps I should take?
