The add detail stage is mostly further refinement. After the blending stage you've laid the foundation to start describing the subject in-depth. Texture, small differences in value resulting from plane changes or subtle color temperature variation. Effectively, this is where the "finishing" starts taking place. Dorian Iten has a tutorial on this for cast drawing where he breaks it down into very clear steps. http://www.dorian-iten.com/howtodraw/

This is a very defined process mostly used for bargue drawings, but this is essentially what drawing process is. You're still going to block your subject in and dial into the details. When drawing you can completely forego some things like the block-in and go straight into articulation if you know you're subject and their placement very well.

I don't think the coloured hues of the face something that Gurney was the first teacher of, and even if that was the case certain ideas like this will be spread and taught by others.
Just look at all the teachings for drawing people that are so much like Loomis' teaching - despite it being something Loomis (claimed to) have created himself and not seen taught anywhere else. Now every teaching book bears similarities to his teachings.
