If you are a /beg/inner or /int/ermediate in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.
Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the drawthread with fundamental exercises.

When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction
to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help.
When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

Hello beg. I drew for 3 hours today if I don't count the breaks and thinking periods. I have reached text itself in KtD. Tomorrow I'll make it to the first exercise.

While the original asking anon is being a no-draw little bitch, I decided to challenge myself and pick up these prompts >>6762613 >>6762623. I spent half the drawing time today thumbnailing the streetfight (I will draw the turtle tomorrow). Picked a very tough angle (bottom up view near the feet of the fighters). So, beg, I need your help with perspective and composition, I winged some kind of 2 vanishing point thing but I don't understand what I did. Is the horizon line vertical here? Is this 3 point perspective, but both horizon line points are the same?? Please tell me if I fucked up and how to do this. (refer to the top-right image, bottom page for the most finished plan)
>>6763186

I think your problem is that the background is utterly barren. Add some trees, there's trees growing under my window in the commie block I live in. Add flowers on the lawn. Add some clutter on the balcony to make it feel lived in.

>"Woah, I'm in the zone, it feels like I'm about to produce peak art"
>Proceeds to make peak garbage

Just posting so that I can blogpost desu. Next time I post, it will be the full set of 7 to spare /begint/ the pleasure of my doodoo.

After 10 2h paintings in the past 11 days it feels like something is swelling up inside me. As if I'm about to level up and gain greater skill. The actual work is still nowhere near good, but I'm starting to really feel annoyed by my self imposed 2h limit. There are aspects of these painting that I could invest an hour more and refine, but I know that I'd fall into yet another trap where I'd be 6h into the painting that I wouldn't finish.
Just 20 more to go. Then a final portrait where I'll go wild, see if I've improved.

>> No.6763236

Stop limiting yourself with these arbitrary rules retard. Who cares if you put 6 hours into a painting you don't finish, if you spent those 6 hours wisely, definining and refining details you will improve. By limiting yourself to a set amount you will never actually learn to do the finer details

day 3 of blogposting about loomis heads

today i had a look at page 19. i figured the point was to just finish the dudes in the book, but since i don't have the physical book i decided to just copy all twenty of the fuckers. i tried not to copy the lines themselves, as i understand that'd be going against the purpose of this book, and rather just 'recreate' the heads on my paper while still paying attention to how all the shapes interact. while i did cheat a little, it was still actually a lot more difficult than just creating my own heads has been, so i figure i learned something by doing this.
trying to draw every head twice helped me understand how much even the smallest fuckup can affect things

tomorrow i will have a look at the marshall vandruff perspective course like someone suggested in the last thread, then draw some more of these wretched heads and perhaps something else too

day 16 (lucky number)
I'm investigating why I seem to draw better with a charcoal brush rather than a regular black circle brush. I tried to do a study with charcoal first then with a basic brush. The charcoal brush forces you to be patient and deliberate, it also helps you by forcing you to start with bigger forms first. I ended up running into a wall while doing the same study twice, I can't progress farther, can anyone help?

i've had some other people tell me it sucks, but i feel i am getting quite a lot out of it. maybe i'm wrong and i'm not really learning anything, but i'm still building a habit to actually sit down and practice which will come in handy eventually.

When people say to draw Loomis heads, the words that are actually coming out of their mouths is to read Loomis and listen to what he's saying and why he's having you draw these stupid heads. I'm getting the hang of crosshatching. My question is should I follow the contour of the shapes or stick to strictly directional (as in one layer 45° to the right, another layer to the left for more darkness, horizontal then vertical for the last bit of darkest areas). I'm conflicted but I'm finding my groove.

You can get to basic constructed drawings in like a couple weeks. Maybe faster depending on your aptitude and how much you practice and stuff. Basically, once you can feel the form, you’re good to go. I mean, you can practice construction whenever you want. Pick something simple like whales and then try to build them out of simple forms.
>>6763984
Cool!
>>6763987
That’s beautiful. I like hatching that follows the form, like the renaissance masters. Try both and see what you like. You could also combine them, using strictly directional hatching to create an even tone on the shadow side of forms, and use the contour type of hatching otherwise. Try doing a couple different simple forms using different styles of hatching.

Guys when you copy a head let's say, how big do you draw the first sketch? (digital) are you supposed to fill up your entire screen, half of it, or just a tiny bit so you can comfortably draw with your wrist/elbow only? When I see people draw anime characters on paper, they mostly do it kinda small.

fwiw, this man had a big penis. but it was also uncircumsized and and like all bulgy and weird looking, definitely the biggest penis ive ever seen outside my own.

before the final pose we were talking and he pointed to a study on the wall that was very well done by a student, but the genitals weren't drawn in.
he's like "so many of my students do that, its kind of making a statement by not drawing it you know? You're trying to avoid controversy and yet by not drawing it in, you're saying something"

i basically nodded and laughed because it was so true; anyways the final pose i said fuck it, im gonna draw nothing but this dudes penis because I draw hentai for fucks sake; the penis is always in the forefront and this is probably the only study of a penis i'll ever do outside my own.

20 minute study of the penis. I had to duck out looking at it at about 17 mins in because honestly, like bruh, that is more penis than im used to seeing idk

so i finish it, and it was the final pose so he was putting his clothes on and i waited and came over and showed him pic related, "so yeah I'm kinda a hentai artist on the side, and fwiw i just wanted to draw nothing but this as an antithesis to what we were talking about"
he straight up laughed and said "Well okay thats a hell of a study !"

anyways i learned i never want to do a study of a penis again. jk
its all form anyways; thanks for putting up with my autism hasta luego

anon you dont need references for the exact same thing that you are drawing (unless you are copying a reference aka "tracing with extra steps")
you can take a skinny girl in the same pose, notice where her muscles and fat are squished, and just draw the same thing on a more curvy woman
>Everything looks like shit but the legs/thighs even more so
you need more understanding of the human form. you might think that you know enough already, but the way you drew the thighs entering the pelvis proves otherwise. study anatomy

it looks like you are still in the "learning to see and copy 2d shapes" stage. not saying there is anything wrong with your path, but consider drawing nude people if you want to move into 3d form (clothing makes it difficult) or if you stick with observation and drawing in 2d, consider more "abstract" subjects like still lifes, flowers, (rocky) landscapes etc. references with more simple, easy to recognize features - whatever the feature you are interested in might be

Helps me to get in the zone so I can easily focus. Half the reason why I started drawing again was to get more time to listen to music. It definitely takes away some brain power though so sometimes I have tot pause the music to figure out some tricky anatomy or perspective thing or when learning something new. What I do is trying to maintain the position with the legs and chest up from the ground and do mini reps, you know, with out relaxing the back muscles, that's very effective.

Consistency is the key, but you will notice the change and you will understand how this thing changes your whole body stance. it changed my life. >i'm having trouble figuring out which lines to actually draw in after doing the construction.
it looks to me that you did it right in your drawings though
a line is only an abstraction that does not exist in reality, they are just a shorthand for indicating various real life phenomena. setting aside all lines that are not part of conveying the form of a subject (like motion lines or abstract blush on an embarrassed anime girls cheeks) all lines are some sort of an "outline".

an object against its background has a line, an object that overlaps another object too. a form that is turning "away" from the camera and revealing an object behind it (like the underside of a boob turning away and revealing the torso underneath) will have a line if an "overhand" is created. or in other terms, if projected onto a plane there is a sharp enough turn in the direction of surfaces. parts of the body that do not create an overhang but have this "turning away" form are sometimes indicated with softer lines even though there is no sharp turn in surface angles. in those cases, the softer lines / gentle hatching is used because all lines (in terms of 3d form) are just an abstract, 100% extreme case of a soft, frontal lighting. so even with no overhang, a turn in surfaces would show up darker in frontal lighting, and depending on ones style can be indicated using lines as well. everything is an outline in this sense. your job is to be aware of the angle of the surface planes and when a sharp turn / overhang is present. a simple example is, where do you draw the "outline" of a breast and where does it end.

>i also don't really fully understand why my heads just end up looking so, so much simpler than the ones in the book
partly because your lines are not confident yet, there is no varying lineweight but i would argue the biggest reason is that they dont "feel" 3d. you succeed here and there in following the construction underneath, but mostly it looks like you are placing circles for the sake of copying the construction process - whereas you should be placing *spheres* in 3d space, arranging them into the base for a head and face, then following those spheres outlines with your pen to describe and make clear, which sphere is in front and which is in the back, where do the spheres merge into each other, where do they pinch etc

in the end, dont worry about it too much yet. you are a beginner and time spent drawing is more valuable for your progress right now than any advice or guidance you can hope to receive here.

keep drawing, keep posting progress. everybody started out the same as you, and everybody had the same problems, doubts and confusions as you are having right now. do your best to solve them sure, but dont get hung up on them or even worse discouraged by them.

NTA but I don't really get the distinction. You're still only operating on a 2D plane, so every "sphere" you place is still going to be a circle.

strictly speaking yes, but there is a subtle difference when you think of it as 3d forms. "feeling the form"
it leads to a more consistent placement, a better use of lines, a more convincing light and shadow etc
it is nearly impossible to explain but there is a distinction

thats why begs are told to grind and strive to feel the form. once you witness and understand the difference for yourself by stumbling into it by accident (made more probable by more practice and more focus during practice) you can turn this way of thinking on consciously and your drawings will be more convincing

it is the difference between a drawing of a thing, and "holy fuck this feels real"

in that anons case, it seemed to me that he was merely drawing a circle for construction because thats where the reference showed a circle construction line. in order to move forward i recommend to *think* of it as if it were a sphere that needs to be placed in the right place, in three dimensions

also thinking of a 3d form is much easier than trying to guess what irregular shape and what crazy angles the 2d projection of a 3d form will have. in the former case, you can just "place" in 3d the basic construction forms and its 2d projection on the paper will happen on its own. in the latter case you would need to memorize 2d projections of which there are too many to count and which are very irregular

can you think of the outline that two breasts create when hunched over in a 3/4 view? can you think of the position of two spheres in that same pose, and then just use their respective overlaps to create the outline? the sphere mentality will be easier

Hello beg. Today was a messy day, fucked around in the first half and was busy in the second. Didn't draw much. I did the feet exercise, around 20 mins in I realized I took an unfortunate uncomfortable position. I decided to push on and shifted my legs a bit once in a while to kinda mitigate it, I still rushed the second foot to finally get walking. I got up STUMBLING lol I almost fell from the sore leg. I was limping for 5 minutes afterwards. It was a good project.

The guy conned his way into being a country-renowned mental health professional by stringing together different scientific terms and a bit of common sense.
Only about thirty percent of people who are currently on SSRIs actually do need them, they did a study where they switched peoples meds for placebo and only 1/3 noticed any difference in their wellbeing. how does one 'develop' the style they want to draw? for example, if I want to draw kind of video-gamey/anime style drawings, is it still worth using books that teach based off of traditional drawing styles?

and also, should I just invest in a good tablet from the get-go once I've decided this IS a hobby I want to pursue? or just stick to scrapbook paper?

Don't think about this at all, it will destroy your confidence. Just worry about understanding the fundamentals and maybe understanding other people's styles, you'll learn what shortcuts/tricks you like and your style will come from there.

>should I just invest in a good tablet from the get-go
Probably not, stick to pencil and paper until you're in a good enough groove that you know you will actually use a tablet. I bought a tablet several years ago thinking it would "get me started" and it did not get me started lmao. I literally use receipts and trash paper from my job and dollar store pencils.
