Why You Should Copy Anime:

**Strive for quantity AND quality.**

Anime Studying:
>Copy anime references exactly and draw them from memory. Use illustrations, screenshots, anime figures, 3D models, etc.
>Don’t copy recklessly. Use construction, color theory, and other fundamental concepts to rehearse a drawing process that you can later easily manipulate for original artwork.
>Post all of your anime studies. Post even when you’re told not to. Create an art community that actually draws and improves together instead of just talking about it.
>Number your attempts and link to your previous posts.
>Critiquers should lead by example by posting their studies.

General Anime Style Discussion:
>Questions about achieving certain styles/techniques/compositions etc.
>Drawing methods, study habits, resources, tutorials, tools, software, etc
>Be specific and try to post a sample of your study attempts before asking for help.

**Draw copies from good anime styled references to mindfully up our mileage, internalize appealing aesthetics, and learn from each other’s processes and knowledge.**

My shit usually looks weird too, I just keep at it.
But maybe it's pretty fucking pointless.

What am I learning from the Nth ChickenScratch?

Each drawing I make looks even less coherent than the previous one.

At some point everything just devolves into schizo inklings that barely resemble anime girls.
It's tough.

I have been drawing very consistently for a few years now but it's always brutal usually.

I have not improved much at all and people kind of dislike my work.

For me personally I felt like when I could copy an image to between 90-95% accuracy almost everything became unlocked. I guess at that point you could continue and move onto the next artist or style but you should have obtained the skill to make pretty much any anime character.

I don't think anybody's goal should be to become the best at doing studies (very accurate) but be the best at getting the most out of studies so eventually you can spread your wings and fly away.

I really just got lucky that I was pre-loaded with accuracy training from regular portrait painting. These are really quite fun because you don't need to start with super complex shapes like a face you can start with literally anything like just a few boxes because 80% of the work is going to be getting the first few marks in the correct spot then after that you can use your own well placed marks like anchors to place everything else. You can just do these exercises 1-3 with an anime portrait to get the same effect https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HMX3K3YMbd8

6771898

>>6771847
Then just spending enough time in the stage where most things are pretty simple shapes and forms so you can very easily adjust where they are without being super destructive. Also I guess you could just copy something line for line but what is more interesting is as you go through the process of copying you can kind of break down and figure out "How can this apply to my workflow when I am not copying" so you can use your own base figure and build the details up on-top of it and you are just reinforcing your own workflow you can use outside of copying as you do the copy. To the point where eventually you can just divorce your workflow/figure from the copy and the world is your oyster that character can become anything you can imagine.

Hello anons, I want to comment on a situation of mine.
I have been improving my drawings (I still have a lot to improve but I am certainly not like at the beginning, I am 6 months old as of tomorrow)
And I feel... that I'm stagnating, I haven't drawn something that I like or that I consider decently good since Friday.
Any comments or advice on how to break this mental or practical limitation that I have, I will put a semi-timeline of my drawings. If they tell me the names of the books, it would be great. I have used several of anatomy but perhaps I use very complex ones.
My goal is to be an independent illustrator and earn a little extra money (I say this because when studying this I think you need to have set goals)
Sorry if I post it here in general anime/manga style but it's the style I more or less want to achieve.
And as a last thing, excuse my autistic English, it is not my main language and the people of my language do not seek to improve, only to trace.

first thing I'd recommend would be to use better paper. that kind of cheap paper doesn't adhere to the graphite well enough so you'll never have the precision you'd like when drawing, not to mention those goddamn lines all over the place. printer paper should suffice
then pick one of the beginner books (vilppu, loomis, hampton, etc) and go through with it so you can learn to draw volumes in space. you seem to be drawing by just winging it without using any form of construction, which results in flat figures (as opposed to volumetric ones, which is the objective) and it's probably the reason why you're not happy with your drawings

where you are right now, I believe the most important is learning to implement construction into your drawings. start by learning to draw basic volumes (box and cyllinder), assembling them into a mannequin, then drawing on top of it. it's really the number 1 fundament, in my opinion
I made a quick redraw of your maka. I sketched a mannequin (construction) then exaggerated the movement with curves (gesture). then there are the more specific knowledge like anatomy, clothes dynamics, etc
all of those would help you so try not to focus too much on a single topic or you will lose motivation. try to learn the overall idea, then move on to the next topic. revisit it later when you feel you need more

I knew it was fucked up because I could tell that the left eye was smaller than the other. You could have also realized this if you placed a line over the top and bottom of the eye like I did and kept it parallel. Then you would notice the left eye was too small as well as the eyebrow too low. This probably kept messing you up over and over everytime you would place the features on your construction. Eyes are generally parallel unless it is an extreme closeup with curved perspective but that is a unique case. Sometimes even the ear placement is fucked because most people wing it. Try a different character model sheet which shows the ear clearly and maybe even the forehead and report back with your attempt. Don't give up or you'll regret it once you realize how easy it gets.

it's okay, I didn't get it at first either. later I realized that one of the advantages of construction is to take perspective into consideration over the entire figure and it's a lot easier to do when the torso is still just a pillow like shape instead of a cluster of segments and curves and muscles. when you don't take perspective into consideration, you get what's called 'symbol drawing' which means you're drawing stickers instead of volumes
also, when drawing traditionally, while drawing over construction may increase the visual noise, it can also look quite nice and organic https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=333dw23qvaE

the thickest lines are the darkest parts with the most ambient occlusion
All the other lines thickness is simply a result of brush strokes, there is no thinking involved, they just do it

instead of thinking why is this line dark you should think where does this line start, what kind of stroke did they use etc

left eye is droopy and slightly too small compared to the right eye. the eyes were not aligned too well with the ear height. i suggest you add some extra thickness to the back of the skull, even if it is stylized this will add charm to the overall shape.
