There you have it. You have an issue here, you obviously are trying to do "that" anime girl wich is hard to get right. It's not enough to say, study anatomy, grind figure, etc. Because once you get "everything right" then you need to tweak and bend that real anatomy into "this". For that you need to get your appeal game really high.

Do lots of sketches, long legs, nimble arms, I hate to say this, but "gesture" is important here. The "loli" anime girl is all about appeal and gesture of the highest order.
Hope it helps, good luck anon.

I'm not >>6690882, but I agree with everything he has to say, though I'd like you to focus all your energy on figure drawing. You do have great skills, but it just seems like you poured all your skill points into copying anime faces. You need to start doing figure drawing and anatomy, if you want to get the body right. Construction is really your main issue here.

Hmm I see where you're coming from, well whatever you decide on later, the roman numeral motif is nice. Though showcasing different artists in the op usually leads to reoccurring participation from them, a dastardly move indeed, their work is exhibited and they feel more compelled to draw again >:)

Finally I made time to do this quick thing. I wanted to explain what I said here >>6690882

In your original pic the pose you did, I immediately read that, as the classic ballerina pose (don't know the name), where they do that cute salute bending the body forward and extending the dress. If that was your intention, you succeeded, I totally got your idea. Then, I "should" say: go look the reference for the pose, but that would not work. I did my own version, I didn't used any reference, I did something I feel it looks good, for the theme and the subject. Reference is too real, too human.

Ok, then I said, do "gesture", wich I hate because that's an advanced tool. But you're looking for something beyond reference. So, do the "gesture" thinking in long skinny legs and arms, fluid, nimble, slender, like one of those bugs you know. So I do that scribble in the middle. That's FAR from any reference, I'm throwing reference out of the window. (That's way I don't recommend "gesture" for a beginner, again). But anyway, once I got that gesture scribble, I build the subject with that guide, and right there you need all the soul and appeal you can get.
So that's what you're looking for anon.I saw your pics on the board, that ms painter style you do, and I recon you're very good, you have the potential to give it a go at this. Just let the thing flow, use a big canvas so you can extend the lines. You can totally do it. Because you do like the subject, and you know the theme, and you're good. Just have fun.

I think the stiffness comes from the arm with the apple. Her pose doesn't feel relaxed, particularly that arm. It's sticking out too far from the body I think. If it was closer and more down like her other arm I think it loosen the pic up some. Sometimes I get up and mimic my pose and see how natural it feels (if possible) and that can help.

Also consider the pose and what you're trying to say with it--either about the character or the scene as a whole. >>6691284 Like this one, looking up at her makes the scene feel a bit more dynamic and her more powerful/grand.

Thanks for posting man. Yes her upper body is perfect, after the hips the proportions gets wonky. Again, I believe this an issue related to the canvas size, I mean you don't need a 5000x5000px canvas but enough to make your eyes see your figure in "context". As a whole, at a "distance", to pick up things. Also using the mirror key is essential. Many times I post stuff mirrored by mistake lol.
But it's an easy fix, just keep at it man. Just a little bit of tuning up, and you're golden.

Alright, how about now? i tweaked her head to have a better sense of 3 dimensional space, altered her waist a bit to account for hip protrusions, fixed her navel, and when I drew a skeleton inside her I noticed her right leg was off so I fixed it. Only thing before I start working with color and shading is I can't shake the feeling her upper body is still a bit off in the somewhat relaxed pose I have. Specifically, her right armpit and her left upper chest/proximal arm area. Any suggestions?

>> No.6692118

>>6692101
Ok! I see now. Yes I understand. The original picture had a proportion issue from the start, in particular her legs. You used those legs as a guide without resizing them. I understand what you did.
the first thing I do once I paste the pic in my program is to resize up the canvas by a thousand pixels or so, So I can have blank space all around the figure to see what needs to be extended if necessary legs, arms, the whole body. You never know. If I don't do that from the start, I will always start with the wrong foot, being guided by the wrong proportions from the start.
That's what happened to you I think. Just open up the canvas all around to see the figure as a whole. that's very important.
Keep at it anon.

Just one more thing I forgot. It's important, the leg is bending towards the camera as well, with makes it much more difficult to show with lines. You need to clearly express the foreshortening of the leg, and then bam, it all makes sense, right? But that is really hard to do with the pixel brush style you used there as well. But the important thing is to understand what the figure is doing and how "ok" are the proportions in relation to that.

WAOW... I can not believe you did this. Thank you so much man! I'm saving this.
Yes when I do redlines for anons I stick to realism. But when I draw for fun "muh style" is pretty loose, it is like stretching the legs you know? When you're hunched for hours and hours, scribbling something methodical and "precise" totally unrelated to art that tension builds up, and you just want to scratch the damn screen with a ice pick and scream, you know...? Well I grab a clean canvas and do this scribbles as fast as I can, and that relaxes me. I'm a poor fag, so I can't grab a mustang and punch it 0 to 100, so I do this... lol. That's why I dont use line weight, (pressure sensitivity) I would go NUTS redoing lines again and again looking for the right line. My OCD would kill me with that.

About TITS. What the hell is with all the TIT and NIP obsession here? Don't blame them though. There I did some booba scribbles for you, so you can study my psychology I guess? Yeah man I love tits, maybe I try to do something out of the ordinary for a reason I don't understand. If the nipple is on the side, maybe I take it as something dynamic? like it has movement or "weight"? I dunno.

Anyway thanks for the drawing man. Can't believe you did that. It's awesome.

woo, I did one too, but you got to post yours first >:(

The only thing I have to add is that I think you should go back to the basics and work on building your figures from the ground up, using boxes, cylinders, and spheres. An up angle shot of a figure is very difficult, and it can only be understood if you do it through basic forms. I recommend the Michael Hampton book for this. Follow it up with Bridgman or Morpho

The anatomy is ok man. I think the issues could be other than your art skills. Are they lying on a metallic floor? Didn't felt to hot about this pic, at all. I know this is not what we do here (questioning artistic decisions and taste in storytelling) But, since I'm doing that "redline", I could express my lack of enthusiasm about the picture, lol.
I hope you resume the project and also find inspiration to do something hot.

Nice gestures! Yes, I new others would try that Asuka for sure, I was curious about that lol. I went with an overblown option, because I new someone surely would do the more straightforward and reasonable pose plus perspective.
I'm tempted to do the Asuka using your poses, but maybe I should stop. lol

>> No.6692844

>>6692639
Yeah, I originally sketched just the figures since this is supposed to be the cover for a booklet, so they were essentially just floating in a void before I added in metal plate flooring.

I must also admit, I did not think too hard about how to make the image more alluring since these are pre-existing characters and I thought my intended audience would find it hot enough knowing their background. I guess I neglected visual storytelling because I thought my audience would just "get it"

I see your point and it makes total sense.
I just feel that you could push your art further if you put just a bit more time into each piece you make.
The fundamentals are definitely there, but you rush the process too much, which to me seems like a waste.
I really like your stuff tho. You are definitely a breath of fresh air for this place.

>Yeah, I originally sketched just the figures since this is supposed to be the cover for a booklet, so they were essentially just floating in a void before I added in metal plate flooring.
The background instantly jumped to my eye as well. I think with these 2 figures that are actually floating in space, which imo is nod a bat thing at all, it's better if you make the background more abstract and actually resembling a "void" where the girls flating would make more sense. Right now the solid background resembles a floor or wall, which clashes with the figures.
Also, your anatomy isn't bad at all. Your gesture (both lines and coloring wise) lacks some confidence tho, which makes the pose and whole artwork look a bit stiff.
I hope what I'm saying makes sense.

Yes!, the way you did the lines on the leg is perfect to show what the leg is doing. Props to you in the fact that you used few and subtle lines. That's good.
Have into account that you may have a solid proportioned figure there, BUT people will judge the appeal of the image separately, how sexy she is, how "hot looking" is her body, etc, etc. That stuff is cruel, and merciless, it comes from the reptile side of our brains, (our coom brains lol). "Beauty" is the most subjective thing there is. Don't be discouraged, if anyone don't like your design, just keep at it. You will find the shapes people want, when they talk and ask for those shapes and features.
Keep grinding anon

Hell if I wanted to appeal to popular opinion I would draw generic gacha chick, fuck that I like titty wolves. It's not a commission. I just want to make sure the anatomy is technically correct and readable because that drives me crazy.
Now all I gotta do is figure out a decent way to draw fur which is the easiest thing ever on real pencil but an asspain in digital. Turns out barrel rotation is a much more important feature than I realized, because the Wacom pro pen 2 doesn't have it so any tool that uses tilt is functionally worthless, and said tools just so happen to be the best pencils in Kirta. I don't know about this one. It should be right, but I see what you mean. There's something about her torso and hips. It's so subtle that it requires the advice of a better redliner, there's one but he never do redlines. =(

Maybe her torso "looks" just a little bit too long but Darkstalkers designs and gestures are so crazy that this pic shouldn't look out of place. I don't want to change your design, it's cool and have great appeal already, wich is the only important thing at the end.
I did a couple of line tweaks on her hip, maybe you could move the wing line a little to show her contour. She and her nice shapes are the main subjects of the pic. Wings should move out of the way lol
Great pic anon, great legs, calves, shoes, breasts, shoulders, hands, face, hair, you're making it already man. keep them coming!

Hi, NICE LEGS. I like them, the calve area is kinda weird though. Calves usually looks good protruding on one side, preferably pointing to the back side of the leg. Legs are very expressive it goes beyond just "correct anatomy". You can grind legs to no end and have fun.

The toes though, you know anthro is not my passion but, when doing those "furry toes" I think is better to go all in with the fluff thing, to show intent. give them big toes man.
hope this helps.

You're obviously really great, and there's nothing technically wrong with the work, except I feel that the shapes might be a bit too round. The latest David Finch video talks about shape language and giving your characters a more chiseled look, and that might be something you want to look into. This extends even into the head you've drawn; a sharper look might be closer to what you want. This is all subjective, of course, and I could be totally changing your art to be something you didn't want

In this case, I think you have to take a pretty good look at the reference pic/photo. If not, there's a lot of different ways to see how his head is resting on the arms. First I thought, there's no need for the arms to be crossed. He could have his right arm grabbing his right shoulder holding his chin. Then I thought Well if he grabs his right shoulder with his left hand then it may look more like you intended. I don't know. As you can see how the head attaches to the body is the least of my concerns, lol.

I'm more driven towards how the arms look (forearms in particular), and how the head rest on them. The pic looks good at first sight, don't worry about that. The head looks good on the body.

I'm loving these pics man. At first sight it looks perfect, you're doing something really good dude. But, you can do a big fix on her arms. There's something about her fore-arms as you can see. And to fix the forearms you have to go up to the shoulders, and traps, and clavicles. The cool angle composition you choose it makes the figure hard to pose exactly right. If you can fix those subtle nuances, you're golden.

This is good, GREAT angle/perspective composition, keep doing these anon!

for the arm on the left, it's a very subtle thing, but you need to make sure that the arms are coming out of the side of the shoulder girdle. In my redline, I just traced the rib cage, and kept its spatial orientation the same, then extended the arms out of the arm holes from there. If we do it that way, the rib cage overlaps the top part of her left arm. I don't know if I'm describing this clearly, but just look at my sketch.. the dotted portion is the overlapped part. Think of your figure as a doll or mannequin, and you should have no problems

This one is hard, because you are talented enough to almost get away with it LOL. Yeah, I see what you mean, but the elbow is not the main issue. It is the torso the side oblique muscle is the only thing we should see. We shouldn't see her groin. That's forcing the pose too much. And then you start to seek other issues like the elbow, because you don't want to sacrifice the groin shot lol. And I understand that. I don't mind really, I think the pic looks awesome man.

I'll see about the big dude behind, first idea that comes to mind is making the pic bigger, to show him more clearly, but I like the composition as it is. The girl looks awesome already in the frame. Ill see. Maybe someone else can help as well.

About the dude, without making the picture bigger. I guess you have to make the most of the visible areas of the guy's body, and make them as much identifiable as possible. Best shot is his arm. It must look clearly as an arm. Then you have the small area on his traps and deltoid joint, and then you have his side starting with the serratus muscles joining down with the oblique and part of the abs. If you can makes those areas as simple and "human like" as possible, it will be clear and easy to identify the dude figure behind.

I’m not the best at perspective, but the problem seems to be in that you drew the table in 2-point perspective with flat sides, while the background is drawn curvilinearly (fisheye). Unless the bookshelves are concave, you should either make the background one or two point perspective (flat horizontals) or fix the table and adjust the characters (harder route).

And then she ask Perkins to take the new girl to the maids wing, and Perkins says "This way, muh lady", and then she crosses paths with the son of the aristocratic lady, and he says, "Hold on Perkins, who's the new face here",, and Perkins says, "She's the new maid, Young Sir"... and he says "Interesting", "she can clean my room right away", and the girl says, "I'm not your servant you prick, I'm you sister, remember your 'uncle' who died in the war?, he was your dad"... ... .. right? lol.

You can't, unless your spine is broken. While it is possible to contort your body the fact is that at the angle that the ribcage is at there is NO way you would be able to see that much of the front of the pelvis or that amount of shoulder from the other side, but >>6702527

My biggest biggest biggest biggest biggest advice is for you to start copying other artwork, every single day. You understand form, and you understand anatomy, but you are struggling with "shape".

Shape is an elusive concept, and it can only be understood by massive "input": copying other artwork, on a huge scale. I'm talking stacks and stacks of paper. This will teach you how professional artists actually draw, what kind of shapes they use, and what they will never do. A pattern will emerge, and your work will begin to take on a look that you'll like.

Copy Bridgman, if you don't know who to copy, but anybody will do. Always copy with the idea of form and anatomy, as you already know

>>6703843 did a really great redline!

Though, I think you can simplify things even further by just focusing on the characters themselves and slightly adjusting the horizon line to underneath the queen. This way we get an upshot of her and, sort of, a down shot of the person in front of her. By eliminating everything else and just focusing on them it will give a better feeling of being trapped and unable to escape the impending wrath we are about to receive from the other person. Also, on first glance we immediately know who is in charge here, because of the undershot.

Either way can work, but when it comes to storytelling it's important really think about what we are trying to communicate in a scene and focus on what would be the best way to express that visually before focusing on the other details afterwards. Just something to consider in the future.

I was waiting for op to redline you, because he's better at these kind of things, but here you go. I think you generally know what you're doing, just keep practicing your figure drawing. Robert Beverly Hale said that your mass conceptions will be refined for the rest of your life, and I think that's true, as long as you keep studying and observing the world. Continue collecting visual data about the figure, and see how you can make the forms more naturalistic, with hints of anatomy.

Try to find the rhythm between parts of the body when making indications in your drawing. The back has too many marks that are disjointed from what's around it. Hi, We can only help, but you're asking about learning, wich is a different thing. There are a lot of methods to learn anatomy, I really believe it all reduces to just copy, copy, copy and copy. I always say that american comic style, is good to do that. That style may lack in "soul", but it's all about anatomy, muscles, and realism. The shapes and muscle details are very well visually described in classic american comic art style. You will learn anatomy for sure, copying that style.

"Live model" reference it's hard because you need a preparation to understand and "translate" what you're really seeing under the skin tissue. But you may find that harder route more rewarding. I don't know.
Draw, draw and draw. It's the only way to find what you're looking for.

Thank you so much for the advice though! I'll just keep copying my favorite artists for now still.
Also how'd you learn your anatomy/figure drawings? I really like your work, if you don't mind me asking

>> No.6706822

>>6706450
Thanks for the kind words anon! That's interesting to "try" to answer. I don't think anyone can exactly tell "how it happened". I think many of us walked the same path. We made drawings of the thing we liked, mostly anime tv shows and "manga", so we were good at copying that in particular but when trying to do something unique from imagination the proportions were all out of wack, because "anime" is the worst learning example possible. But we atleast had a foundation, so the only way to fix it was to go back to the west, and do the same but with anatomically correct examples, like classic comics, Batman, Spiderman, "Justice League", X-men, the classics. So in a way I've learned gesture from the east, and anatomy from the west, all upside-down. I think "gesture" should be learnt after figure anatomy to avoid the classic "beg aberrations" lol
I'm still learning though =)

her head is turned quite far to the side and tilted downwards. this is not possible (try it with your own head).

It is clear your are great dude. Now you have a problem: how to foreshortening successfully the whole figure. You have to use every anatomy feature in your advantage, horns, head, eyes, shoulders, forearms, use those basic shapes and lines as perspective reference for the viewer.
The head, hand grabbing the club, and shoulder in the foreground, then all the rest must be reduced (put into perspective) incrementally to achieve that full body foreshortening. You did that, but you had not enough confidence to make his head big enough. that's understandable, if the whole foreshortening is not well constructed that big head will look goofy af, lol. But you can do it, and you MUST do it. These foreshortening perspective angles for pin-ups are a MUST.

You don't have to be successful in one go, do some research with simple doodles, and basic construction, reduce the figure to a "low poly count" version and search for the angle and perspective, till you find the right shape/solution.
Hope it helps. You're good enough to solve this successfully. Keep at it.

But maybe you don't quite see yet a way to do the lines inside the contour of the figure... Then, I put lines all over the figure as guides for a suit, or clothing, or whatever you need to do, vertical lines help a lot. Hair floating, (a cape in case this is some super hero themed subject), etc.
I like how you did the hands, and the arms, legs, you're good anon. I just fixed the right foot. That's all. I hope it helps!
(Sorry I kinda assumed the gender here lol. If it is a guy I would make the thighs thinner and the torso wider.)

Like these anons said >>6708350 >>6708511 Those are the serratus, it's a pet peeve of mine. I add the serratus always, even if it is not supposed to be seen, or noticed. It is a sexy detail as that anon said.
It's not a pointless visual detail though. It is the visual symbol used to connect the back with the frontal view of the torso (abs). I may use it mainly as a cosmetic device, but it is very important.
