“Just draw” is a garbage meme that only gives you practice consistency at best. Except your practice is worthless. What are the absolute dulled, down basic first steps laid out in plain English so even a retard can understand how to draw? Thank you.

Yes, exactly. I have given up on art because of it. I think everyone should also give up.
I will never have a pro tutor me personally and giving me all the secret recipes to become social media famous, for free, so why even bother anymore? Man, if only i could draw master work by thinking about them and then everyone on social media worships me and gives me money for eternity and girls want to fuck me and my parents finally love me, while i post epic and funny video game clips on my twitter profile.

>What are the absolute dulled, down basic first steps laid out in plain English so even a retard can understand how to draw? Thank you.
look at your surroundings. pick a a simple object, look at it for a bit, think about the proportions in relation to nearby objects. if you picked a bottle, where is the halfway point? how narrow is the opening compared to the rest of it?
take your pencil to the paper, gently lay some light guide lines based of what you are observing. when you feel like you've got the proportions sorted, try drawing the contour of the object.
Keep drawing more objects, maybe the table the bottle is on. how do the lines of the table relate to the bottle? your first 100 drawings will suck for sure, but if you keep challenging yourself to judge proportions and shapes like this, you get gud.

Thought it would be a gay book because of the title but it's a pretty good one for what you're looking for. It doesn't have that huge jump in complexity from step 1 to step 2 that some books have.

Try "Laws Guide to Nature Journaling" by Muir Laws and then "Every Day Sketching and Drawing" by Steven Reddy. If you can muster the motivation to read through those books honestly, meaning your phone is locked away, you're not at the computer, you're in a decent spot and you've got your sketchbook ready for when you're inspired, and then you give the methods honest tries, it can be a good way to break out of the pseudo master study route. Because becoming an e-celebrity and getting patreon money from coomers is easy mode and likes and followers are the equivalent of social status. It's easy and you don't have to do anything, much like CSR or Sakimi-chan. If they could do it, i can too.
But without actually drawing or putting any effort though and then i'll make threads complaining why this isn't easy and people on twitter don't worship my existence and every piece of advice is bullshit because it doesn't work the instant i barely attempt it. I drew half a circle today and wondered why i didn't get likes and followers on social media, i guess everyone is just jealous and wants me to fail. Fucking crabs.
I'm also 18 and my goal in life is to buy a sportscar so my friends and family will think i'm cool and women will throw themselves at my feet. Self-awareness or critical thinking is for schizos. Thinking is for the mentally ill.
Now tell me how to get rich and famous without doing any work.

The harder you study each individual piece you draw the more you'll get out of it. Sometimes it'll suck because a pose or whatever is far beyond your reach but even if it turns out so bad it's unpostable you'll have still learned a lot because you tried really hard. I draw on average 50 images a year which is abysmal but I still found success because I put my all into everything I made.

While there are plenty of tried and true paths that seem to work for most people, we all have our own quirks, preferred learning methods and motivations that influence how fast our individual progress will is. The fact of the matter is "just draw" DOES get results, but that doesn't necessarily mean torturing yourself with endlessly doing dull, repetitive drawing exercises. I was one of those autists who thought that just gritting my teeth and forcing myself to grind Feng Zhu/Peter Han/Scott Robertson and approaching art from a heavily technical/academic view was the best way to git good. And while it did end up teaching me a lot of important info/techniques, you can only rely on sheer willpower for so long before you get heft diminishing returns. I was constantly frustrated with myself and my inability to progress as fast as I thought I should. This led to burn out and less drawing which led to more anxiety and frustration knowing every day I didn't draw was another missed opportunity. Worse still, was the fact that none of my art professors were able to share any helpful insights, despite all of them having long professional careers working for Disney, Blizzard, Pixar, Hanna Barbera, etc. In general, Youtube and finding free lectures/pdf/guides through places like /ic/ did more for my education than art school ever did.
However, one aspect of school DID help was getting to know other artists. Some of them were leaps and bounds ahead of me despite not knowing even a fraction of the books/names that would be common knowledge on /ic/. But they drew and they drew A LOT. Not just for practice and assignments, but for FUN. And that's the key I'd been missing since I was a kid. I occasionally enjoyed the results of a finished piece, but the process of getting there was always painful and frustrating. My classmates didn't agonize over every little bit of anatomy or perspective or shading; they just went with it, even if they knew something was off. (continued)

>> No.6687628

>>6687626
Even after I realized and accepted that “having fun” was the key to vastly improving my artistic progress, I just couldn’t seem to do it. The vicious cycle of frustration, self-doubt and burn out continued. That was until I decided to just say “fuck it” and draw depraved coomer shit. Suddenly I found myself effortlessly spending 8 hours working on edits of other artists’ work, to combining bits of my own stuff with it, to making completely original pieces. My fellow coom-brained degenerates loved it all and soon I was getting dozens of people asking if I did commissions, despite my work still being (imho) /beg/-tier. Now I’m working on two separate comics and multiple character sheets and having a blast. Do I want to give up on the idea of working as an artist in the SFW sphere? No, but I’m also being realistic. But my progress doing coomer art has given me a massive boost in confidence and made me want to go back to working on things related to what I had originally wanted to do and only time will tell if I can turn that into a career – But at least I’m now enjoying doing art again and actually look forward to getting back to my projects instead of dreading them. I’m not saying coomer shit is what –you– should do, Anons, but try to find that thing that gets you in that “flow state” -whatever that may be- and suddenly learning and practice will GIVE you energy rather than taking it.

>TL;DR: If you find a way to have fun with art while also taking steps to improve upon it, you will progress 10x faster than just putting your face to the grinder and obsessing over technicals. Learn to “fail forward” and embrace the fact that mistakes and “failures” will get you infinitely farther than along the path to success than remaining paralyzed with indecision/fear/doubt.

Not to mention the pace of the boards means you can’t spend too much time on anything or you missed the opportunity to post in context.
People here will act like they’re some paragons of counter culture, but think tableguy is going too far.

It's the nature of the beast. Ideally that's why you look for the right subculture/niche to work within. Having a solid understanding of both your subject and audience is the key to getting the reaction you desire. "Less is more" tends to be the golden rule with most humorous art in particular. I've had pieces I'd spent waaaay too much time on fall completely flat vs ones I'd maybe spent an hour at most half-assing get spammed thread after thread. Gotta have a thickskin too, which goes without saying. I'm being a bit vague since I don't know anything about your art other than it being "edgy humor" (which could mean any number of different things depending on how long you've been here and what boards you frequent), but if you're having more fun than not doing it, then it's working. >But how can you draw for fun when you don't know how to draw!
anon, perhaps you didn't gather from my post that "knowing how to draw" (unless you literally have never picked up a pencil and doodled in your life) is largely subjective. I'd been (very casually) drawing on and off since I was 8 years old by the time I was struggling with my experiences mentioned above and I still saw myself as "not knowing how to draw". If you're so self-critical about your own art that it literally prevents you from putting pen to paper you are either: a) better than you give yourself credit for or b) need to remember a time you had fun drawing and why you wanted to learn to draw in the first place and start from there.

It doesn't matter if you draw literal sonichu-tier garbage right now if you can find a way to enjoy even drawing that. Then watch a video/read a book/look at a single god damn guide on "hey why do my character's arms look fucky?" and try to make them a little less fucky. They don't have to be perfect, just better than they were last time. Rinse, repeat. Keep trying something until it clicks in your head, even if it takes months/years of nothing making sense. I learned more about how to figure draw from a single 30min Glenn Vilpuu video than several semesters of life drawing in a studio. And it's not like you HAVE to start from a certain point either, no matter what autists here will tell you otherwise. You want to learn perspective? Draw fuggin blocks and buildings to your heart's content or don't. Half the people in my senior classes had never done more than a single project in proper 3point perspective and they could still manage to make illustrations that looked awesome in spite of some of their perspectives being off.

You want to learn how to color/shade but think your line work is too dogshit to be fun? Use someone else's linework and go nuts. Hell I used to do that for old black and white warhammer art.

It teaches you how to love the act of drawing, ensuring that you'll want to keep doing it and not remain stuck as a beginner forever.
Draw the things that you like, use references and don't be afraid to try new tools. More advanced knowledge should only come later, and for now what should be focused on is making sure that the subject of your art is identifiable.
You'll learn way more if you just draw and then later compare it with the work of others and also photos to see where you got things wrong and how to make it better. Once you identify the problem then you can focus on it and study further.

What do you like drawing? Humans? Animals? Architecture? Pick something, draw a lot, observe and compare. However, don't get too comfy and challenge yourself to draw new things or difficult things within a field of interest.
The hardest part is to keep going. That is why you have to love it and understand that improvement comes with time. Just draw. Copy photos, copy other drawings you found interesting, trace, do whatever you feel like doing as long as you enjoy it. Persevere and don't let the first results that are going to be shit bring you down.
If you feel like you are lacking ideas, look at more art, watch movies, play games, read books, anything that will help you grow your visual library and feed your creativity.
