**Strive for quantity AND quality.**

Anime Studying:
>Copy anime references exactly and draw them from memory. Use illustrations, screenshots, anime figures, 3D models, etc.
>Don’t copy recklessly. Use construction, color theory, and other fundamental concepts to rehearse a drawing process that you can later easily manipulate for original artwork.
>Post all of your anime studies. Post even when you’re told not to. Create an art community that actually draws and improves together instead of just talking about it.
>Number your attempts and link to your previous posts.
>Critiquers should lead by example by posting their studies.

General Anime Style Discussion:
>Questions about achieving certain styles/techniques/compositions etc.
>Drawing methods, study habits, resources, tutorials, tools, software, etc
>Be specific and try to post a sample of your study attempts before asking for help.

**Draw copies from good anime styled references to mindfully up our mileage, internalize appealing aesthetics, and learn from each other’s processes and knowledge.**

Beginner poses tend to be unbalanced either through the backs and legs being wonky or not having the floor in mind, so the fact that you have her standing realistically shows an understanding! Keep studying full body poses like this and you'll really get in edgewise.

T-thanks, I actually went in to this piece with the intention to practice that balance of a basic standing pose but with tad exaggerated forward lean, or what I later learned to be the S-shaped action line.
But I was most worried about the pose of the arms, they just feel cheesy and little awkward to me. And I can't tell if I'm just overthinking it or is there actually something there. It's the second time I've ever drawn hands at all ...

>>6690347
>the shoes feel real flat
Can you elaborate? I can see only the shoe closer to the broom lacking bit of shape on the inside wall.
>I'm guessing your going for a minimilst shading here?
Style-wise every decision I made there was pragmatic. I've been drawing for a shockingly little amount of time, I don't want to overwhelm myself with complex shading or tools. This kind of two-tone "oekaki" style looks really nice when done by japanese artists, it seemed to me the easiest thing to try replicate.

I'm just really scared to try more detailed coloring. It's among the top things that makes anime art look like westener slop. And I have zero idea how the japanese artists make their shading look good. For most other things I have gathered some insight just from the sheer amount of art I've enjoyed, but shading I'm still completely clueless about.

And I think that's fine for now. I believe for a beginner it makes a lot more sense to just put all the focus on the damn lineart, to get the shape of things right. Then do a very simple but effective shading pass and quickly move on, instead of spending a week to make your art worse with shit shading.

Oops that turned into a rant-blog
but i love opinions

I dont really have any to be honest as i think its actually one of my weaker points lol but thanks a lot. I guess just looking and analizing different works helps a lot and keeping in mind the source of light or where you can use soft or hard shadows but you probably heard that before. your pic looks okay but i would use more saturated shadows for the skin (which i think actually looks the best in terms of shading compared to the rest), also on the sweater you seem to use the darkest shadow pretty randomly, keep your shading organized more. if you are adding cast shadows (like the one under her chin or the one under the skirt) use a hard darker color, this cast shadow and ambient occlusion are most of the time the darkest in this artstyle. well maybe im talking way too much for a beg

This was intentional. That very bottom red line, what do you mean with it, where the feet should be in relation to it? Should the tip of the shoe be on it?

You draw enough of them, you start understanding what the body is capable of as well as combining them into unique ones. Also in combination learning how to draw more dynamic ones by learning perspective and how to exaggerate it.

"Why can [x] artist bust out poses like they've drawn hundreds of if before?" Because they have drawn hundreds of it before or at least something similar. Or they're familiar enough with anatomy that they can come up with poses and depict them in a believable manner. Yoshinari is an animator, for example (pic rel) and he's probably drawn thousands of bodies at this point.
References and 3d tools help bridge that gap of information when you're still drawing early on. But it's on you to start building that visual library up now so you can more effectively do poses later.

Is it better to learn by taking your time with gestures or doing quick gestures?

>> No.6699039

>>6698978
The quick gestures also double as a warm-up to get your brain going so drawing a batch of them wouldn't hurt to do at the start. The more you do them the more you'll develop a shorthand for figures which is useful later. But definitely do the bulk of your gestures longer if you're struggling with it. A minute or two. You'll get 30 done in half an hour which is a reasonable speed. Then you can move on. Do them everyday since commitment is part of the discipline and you'll get your mileage in!

If it's a completed piece then stop letting it bug you if that's not your drive. If you don't want someone calling your full work shit, then keep practicing until you know for a fact that they're wrong. You have to either take pride in the fact that you're working to get better, or like what you make enough that some random's opinion doesn't interrupt your grind.

its never random colors. learn about hue/value/saturation and how they interact with eachother, it's very important. Also its never random places, it all has to do with suggesting forms through deliberate shapes.
Most of the darker values you are seeing are intentionally suggesting the reflection of the eyelashes and the darkness of the pupil, however they don't contrast heavily enough to be distinct. It results in them looking like a random mess of blue-greys but when you step back and look at the whole image it sells the illusion.

You can never really tell unless the artist actually shows the undersketch or a timelapse. But you should get in the habit of using rough sketches no matter how scribbly or minimal they are. Freehand drawing is reserved for showing off your mileage and skill (situational) or for fun, low stakes drawing. You're absolutely going to want to rough things in and have guidelines so you plan your main work better. Even pros who don't follow their guides 100% still do at least the bare minimum of a thumbnail or rough to get ideas down before committing.

Completely hopeless at technical feedback, but quite an elitist, similar to myself. He is not afraid to tell me exactly what grade of an artist I am, or when I start to veer off from the "japanese standard".
Sometimes it takes a bit of effort to decipher what exactly he's seeing in my art, but it's still incredibly valuable. He's like an extra set of fresh eyes for me.
Anyway, what I'm saying is, that anyone can tell what "looks off", even if they can't quite tell how to fix it. It's the artists job to figure out how to make the viewer like the art.
Like, surely, the proportions issues and beg-ass hand pose are obvious to everyone?

I'm actually totally expecting to burn out at some point, but it's worth it to keep up my pace.
I know not to be too ambitious, I limit the things I try to improve on a piece. Like here I kept the exact sameshading and oekaki style even thought that desperately needs improving (a style I chose for its easiness). But I had already a small list of things to work out.

You art is fine. Your anatomy/proportions aren’t the problem- it’s easy to the eyes, and doesn’t have any noticeable mistakes, even if it’s a little stiff.

It’s the face that cause problem. There is slight feature creep, the neck is misplaced, her right pupil isn’t aligned to where she should be looking at, and the back of her skull is too small which is the main problem causer coupled with the huge eyes- which look kinda dead due to the lack of noticeable highlights.

I tried to do a little rework just so you can see what I’m talking about, I left the body mostly intact, just added a few more shadows, curved the limbs a little, and added shines. But otherwise it’s a very nice and cute marisa anon.

That was literally my first time ever drawing an unclothed body too. I am here setting a baseline for myself, and trying to find everything I could improve on. But I know my biased eyes wont be able to spot everything.

>even if it’s a little stiff.
This is something I seem to always have trouble with, and I just fail to figure out how to fix it.

Anyway, about eyes, the first >>6690179 marisa I decided to leave lightly shaded with sharp (difficult to position) pupils because I thought the contrast in color between her clothes (the hat) and the eyes had something interesting going on.
With this pic I just worked on the anatomy/proportions/pose and just copied the shading in interest of time, since this is going to be last one I draw in this pixelated oekaki (I bought a tablet!!). But I forgot to consider that this one has no hat so the logic for leaving the eyes so light isn't there. And you're absolutely right they look dead af in this one. This actually bothers me so much now.
Now, I dont like your eyes at all, but heres a Remu from couple weeks back, there I had less experimental eyes >>/ic/thread/6671817#p6672324..

wonder how popular artists feel about others adopting their style

>> No.6703208

>>6703199
I've also heard of other artists having meltdowns about their style being replicated. I think it depends on the level of copying and claiming it's yours. We're told to study other artists by copying but that's meant to just be a way for us to learn to pick it apart and apply certain aspects to amalgamate into our own drawing style. But if you, say, post a drawing that's in another artist's style, but also in the exact same pose, with a similar character (with some minor tweaks) and the same composition as one of their existing pieces then that's just straight up replication and is usually frowned upon. Lots of people drew like Mignola since Hellboy's popularity, for example, but I haven't seen him be really bothered by it and it doesn't affect his bottom line in any way because his work is still unmistakably his no matter how many copycats are out there.
I think some artists can be really schizo about it when an homage can be flattering or just ignored at the most since no one can really replicate your own ideas in the end.

I received a request to make an oppai loli, in this case it's the character chloe from prisma/fgo as a german beer maid with exposed nipples
is this loli enough? I've never drawn a loli before so I'm not used to that body type

Holy fuck i wanted to weep when I saw the thumbnail, how can I make my art less unbalanced/skewing towards one direction. Do I always have to flip the canvas?

did you intentionally liquify the top part? there's no way this naturally happens

>> No.6705977

>>6705948
Flipping helps, but also you're drawing the features too flat. If you need your guidelines to be more robust and rigid then you should do that to get a sense of proportion.

I didn't but I guess I was a bit absent minded. Still not an excuse.
>>6705977
I feel like it's a bit too extra? I'm convinced that no one needs those guidelines to make facial features not flat, especially for something as simple as my reference.

The point of master copies is to break down what makes the artist's style look the way it does. Then you do enough copies (and drawing figures in general) to where you also don't need the guidelines anymore and can discern stylistic choices. Just because the artist doesn't use guidelines doesn't mean you shouldn't either, especially when your forms are still incredibly wonky.
I'm also not saying to draw an entire realistic head and autistically measure each line. Just enough of an undersketch for your own reference. Tracing it first like the other anon said helps too.
