i’ve seen vilpuu mentioned and recommended to me on this thread several times and from my understanding he teaches gesture drawing but i’m just curious what make his courses good? and also if i should do the books or the videos

also i’m wondering why i see him groping anime girls so much but that might be a separate thing…

>an instructor for thirteen years
an instructor at ART CENTER, which was the best art school in the country at that time. Gigachads like Burne Hogarth, Harry Carmean, John Lagata, and Lorser Feitelson were there alongside Vilppu and Gang. Reminder that he's also Steve Huston's senpai, and probably taught Craig Mullins. (Mullins recommended Vilppu on the Sijun forums 20 years ago) Drew Struzan named him as one of his favorite teachers and had Vilppu be his advisor for his master's thesis.

Is there a "recommended practice list" to go along with each chapter of the vilppu book? Something like
>Read and copy chapter 1 X amount of times over an X day/week period
>Watch the video for chapter 1 X amount of times
>Do X gesture drawings (or chapter specific practice) per day for X days
>Do X finished pieces focusing on the gesture (or whatever the chapter is focusing on) of the figure

>> No.6685359

vilppu just breaks down form the best, and basically once you can draw form correctly. I watched all of his videos in high school circa 2010ish and I still STILL find myself using the techniques. Vilppus a hidden gem, once you watch the videos, just any of them, ideally head 1 and gesture are the best and most mind blowing.

plus vilppu is just a good nice old man, like when in the head video, he’s holding a skull and the top of the skull falls off he just goes “guy really flipped his lid huh” heh heh from the class

its dope honestly, my theory is that anyone that doesn’t resonate with the vilppu videos lacks the basic brainpower to be serious about drawing.

Weston recommends the Vilppu drawing manual as one of the core books to study. Wish I knew more about Keane though. He attended Calarts, so he probably missed out on Vilppu, at least until he came to work for Disney

Vilppu is amazing, but if you're more mathematically brained like Asians are, someone like Krenz might be better for you, he breaks it down and makes you grind autistic shit for days, so it gets engraved into your brain the asian way. I personally would recommend vilppu after you have some basic understanding of perspective and you're able to draw acurately and straight, so maybe start with the krenz accuracy exercises first, you can find all of that in /asg/

I guess I'll try Krenz since Vilppu's, "just feel it, bro," is completely incomprehensible to me. Does he have a course?

Yes he's absolutely great. I will never grow tired of his lessons. He explains things in a pretty easy manner and he's just nice.

Vilppu's courses are aimed at people who already know how to draw, because that's how his students were. You don't get into art school without a portfolio, let alone as a total beginner who can't draw at all. That makes him more advanced than the average /ic/ visitor is ready for.

Beginners can improve just by doing whatever they want. It’s the intermediates who have a hard time improving
