If you are a /beg/inner or /int/ermediate in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.
Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the drawthread with fundamental exercises.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS wide using one of the following methods:
1. screenshot the image and post that instead
2. change camera capture settings to something smaller
3. send to computer and resize in MSPaint

TRY TO BE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK.
When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help. When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

You don't understand the forms, so you've lost lots of important details that convey their turn and orientation; and messed up the foreshortening wherever things are coming towards or away from the viewer. You also ignored the hatching in the reference, and just sort of made up your own rendering, losing even more of the forms in the process.

Either move the foot out of the way of her butt and foreshorten a little more on the foot and calf, this way she is showing her ass, the crux of the drawing and will offer more action to her movement. Kinda like the shot was taken as she was shifting her weight.

Or tighten her right foot into her butt and show her heel really pressing against the butt there to once again emphasize the crux of the drawing. You can show the shift of weight occuring through the reactivity of the fabric and skin tightening beneath.

In terms of scale the close foot, her right, is too small and the right leg is offering an unappealing puppetish symmetry in the pose.

The butt is fine she's looking right.

The drawing is way better than anything else in here sorry to be nitpicky this looks really really good.

Seriously now, I think the best way to practice for you is to do a master study and then do a piece of your own, then compare the two. Your stuff is almost there to being good, just need to study more.

COOL, people are doing clothes. I don't know if it is the same anon, but here >>6680368 I straighten all the lines in the clothes, (and did some work in the girl's figure but that's not important), the clothes should be designed as solid shapes, blocks, so you can give them direction, weight and perspective, if needed. Like any other solid material subjected to the laws of laws of physics, like I show in the hand below holding a piece of cloth. This could sound like tha'ts what childs do, they draw squares and straight lines to do anything pants, shoes shirts, BUT here's when you add fashion study research and understanding. Fashion, clothing must be learned and study as any other matter in art.

Here anon, you asked
>>6680473
>not sure what I should do about that
You are doing right, I did the exercise to use your construction template to redraw everything and it looks good, so your construction method is right, you just have to keep grinding those studies, till you got what you want. And then I did some clothes lines on top on the side, again keeping it simple is the key.

Go look Leyendecker and take note of how he gives clothes elegance and simplicity with dynamic (mostly) straight lines.

Yep, muscle structure helps a lot to read anatomy. Even if you don't know muscle structure, the brain take muscle detail as markers and measure points, it doesn't even has to be a conscious process. The unconscious part of the mind also plays a big role in learning methods.

Most of the time I do the style in pic related. Or super build up figures, it is almost never an in between muscle build.

Samus looks awesome, so you did the hard part great already. Maybe her leg needs to be a little bit "broken" like with some dynamic pose. Her hand just a little big bigger, because it's a hand inside an armored glove-suit.

And then the horse (unicorn). That's easy to fix, horses have a very distinctive shape, you can't miss. I draw a very basic horse head like symbol, if you follow those lines it will look recognizable as a horse head. You can be as detailed as you want but it's not necessary. It's an easy fix.

Samus is done, and that's the whole image goal. So congrats beforehand.

Yep,still working on it.

I took a week off, but I am determined to see the thing done. I feel like someone painting a bridge:you start on one end,and by the time you come full circle around it,the first thing you painted need another coat. But turning squiggles into suggestions of structures far away takes oodles of little black lines, and I only have a cheap pencil sharpener that is to making points as a machete is to fine dining. But my style is nothing but a succession of happy accidents anyway,so even a jagged lead can deliver the tightest of lines. My world is full of huge looming things, and this building, and it is a created thing despite its looks, this strip introduces Cassandra's House, because she conjured it into being, and has been exploring it ever since, for a decade or more. The Snowglobe castle is another impossibly huge building, with all sorts of details that the viewer can speculate about. So I made squiggles everywhere, and now I am turning them into "stuff". I am wondering what to do with the center road, and what design it will incorporate. Perspective wise,I can draw stuff detailed towards the bottom of the page, then merely suggest that pattern continuing in the distance. The finish line is close. Then the black ink. Then...color.

Something's been bothering me since the last time I posted here.
What the hell is "drawing from imagination", and why do at least some anons imply you can't draw anything original without it? You imply you either copy or draw in a vacuum all from imagination. This obviously sounds retarded, but I was accused of tracing everything because anons couldn't believe the progress I was making in just a couple weeks. Claiming that there's no way you can draw or shade stuff like that as a beginner. Impossibility, 100% traced.
Are you not allowed to actually learn as you go by referencing bits from here and there? There were indeed a gorillion things I had no idea how to draw, not until I looked up how my favorite artists did it, and then more importantly some experimentation on how to fit and transform the pattern to whatever I was doing (this is where the real learning happens). No need to copy or trace shit.

I'm still new so I don't understand your jargon but it starts to feel like a lot of the stuff you tell to beginners is just bullshit.

Hello. So after the spike drawing two days ago, I decided to draw kirby this time and I liked this cover art (i havent played this specific kirby game though) I tried some brush settings someone recommended me with the stabilizer and yeah I would say it helped. Regarding your question(s):
>What the hell is "drawing from imagination"
Drawing from imagination is the goal of 90% of the anons, even the krenzbros, so people here will probably defend it. Now, this is from my memory, but from what I remember no one accused you of tracing, just that you were copying shit for attention.
>Are you not allowed to actually learn as you go by referencing bits from here and there?
Yes, you are, but that is what people here call copying, it's the wrong term, it should be study, but that's life.
Something that is bothering about your whole process is... how the fuck do you draw other stuff after your "real learning"? Because what you are describing as process has a case by case effectiveness.

I don't understand this accusation one bit either.
First I avoided even telling who I was or what my story is, not until some anon specifically asked me about it. I was there just to get feedback, I honestly thought nobody would even remember me. But it seems it's a general of regulars.
>You again mate? At this point, you should put a username if you want to be recognized here at this level.
And what the hell do you mean "you again", It's been a whole week and a hundred threads since I last made an appearance.
If I was going out of my way to build some sort of reputation or character here, I'd be posting a lot more than this and indeed namefagging too.
Which I sort of was at the very beginning, since I was bit bewildered by the response of the very first noodle reimu. But later I came to understand what the hell was going on, I apologize for any (new)faggy behavior back then.

Drama *is* fun, but I'm here just to learn to draw.

>Something that is bothering about your whole process is... how the fuck do you draw other stuff after your "real learning"? Because what you are describing as process has a case by case effectiveness.
Clearly there is something to my process, if I as a week 3 beginner can polish a turd to that degree.
But I don't really understand that point of yours. If I can draw original art, does it matter what the process is (as long as its not straight plagiarism)?
Besides, once I've done a thing X from angle Y, I can do it again "out of imagination", or more precisely I just have an idea what the pattern is. I can draw those faces pretty fast, for example. And a lot of otaku art is just the same patterns over and over again. The anime study general seems to understand this.

God dammit I hit the post character limit again >.<

try to implement the background at the same time that the main character. You could also try to put a better contrast with the shadows and lights, but i can see that the colors of the reference are the way they are. another thing is that for example, the bottom lip is a bit different from the reference, as well as the nose and the jaw. 1) i think the brush your using might be holding you back from things looking more realistic, it would probably benefit you to try a basic round brush w opacity connected to pressure

2) shading according to material. a good example is with the metal, which is high contrast with extreme lights and darks. there’s plenty of videos and stuff online about shading metal and other materials so i won’t go to much into it

3) in general better brush economy and shading (more contrast/ hue shifting are some things that pop into my head for shading… plenty of videos on those topics too so i recommend looking for some)

adding in to number 2 i also recommend studying the materials you want to draw from reference… if you don’t have much experience with using reference/studying my general workflow for it is

1) copy/trace/colorpick from reference to you hearts content

2) only look at reference without using the methods from step one. you can also reference your drawing from step one

3) put all that away and try to use what you learned from imagination

4) repeat til your happy

ik it sounds boring but it helps a lot. you can also use other artists’ works as reference if you like the way they draw a certain thing.

You are not understanding the point of the exercise. Do 15 minutes even if it looks bad. Try to figure out how to optimize your work flow to fit into that 15 minute time block better. Over the course of a month your 15 minute sketch will improve in quality and so will your time managment skills. "Speed" is a completely unseen "stat" by the observer but is an integral part of an artists skill set. It is wrong to assume that by drawing a lot will mean you will just get faster naturally. Speed and efficiency is something you have to practice.

>> No.6682503

i saw that video too haha, i recommend just doing the 15 minute sketch and not worrying about mistake fixing, as timed activities mainly work on your speed/observation from my experience, and follow the rule of not zooming in (if you want to get better at hands to a separate study of that)

just make sure that you point out the mistakes to yourself, and if you have the time to extend the sketch to 30 minutes then you’d probably have time to do a 5-10 minute sketch (a SEPARATE sketch, it’s better to not get too caught up in the details and fixing stuff) making sure to avoid your mistakes

but hey, what do i know ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Very cool! I like the character and your style buddy.
I think curves can fix it,or rendering a little more, you don’t need to start it all over again!
(Unless you want to,of course)

It is already finished, but the arm still bothers me a lot…can someone help me with it?
Is it just too wide,or is the pose itself weird?

sorry i just realized how dumb i sounded with the )) comparison

also this was a different post but for clothing i just recommend studying from reference/ looking at reference for the types of clothing you want to draw, it’s done wonders for me in the past.

references are also helpful for drawing clothing that makes sense irl for character designs cause i usually draw really nonsensical clothing when it’s from imagination, but maybe that’s a me problem ;(

A quick fix, I hope it helps. Dude the Pic is BEAUTIFUL. Hands are hard, even for good artists. Specially closed hands. If you feel the shape doesn't make it for you, try other gesture, till you feel it. Shape appeal is like tuning stations in old radios.

Finally someone brings this out. OF COURSE it is ok to trace reference as a grinding exercise, and it will speed your progress. There's a lot of shit old people say, like "don't use a ruler", "don't trace", "don't copy", Jesus Fucking Christ. COPY, TRACE, COPY, TRACE, COPY, TRACE Till is embedded in your fucking DNA. Because your goal is not to draw any of the things you reference but talk your own talk, you won't be doing anything like the stuff you use as reference.
And with the digital tools today the tracing exercise is optimized completely. You don't need fucking light tables, and crazy shit, you can mirror your work with a key, is fucking awesome the tools we have today.
Just do it.
