How do I get better at coming with character designs?

>> No.6679944

Visual library

OCs
Make a lot of them and put effort in it.

Do it a lot. What, did you expect some magic trick?

Understand your audience. Who read garbage shonen like hunterxhunted? Edgelords, is killua edgy? Yes. Therefore, people like him.
If you care about character design you should look for somebody else though, Togashi is garbage at it and his manga get carried by the plot, not the visuals.

what a horrible take what the fuck are you talking about.
Those anons are completely right. Iteration, understanding shape language and visual storytelling. Your character should be of a part of the world that they live in and make sense in that world, even if they are otherworldly. A basic understanding of symbology and Jungian psychology really helps as well since it grounds your themes in truth. Google "teleology".

None of them said this. And pandering to your main audience is still a better advice before doing all that first

Yeah but I said it moron. Pandering has nothing to do with good character design, it affects the reception of the product.

This is some well crafted bait. Maybe a bit on the nose with the edgelord comment, but pretty impressive otherwise

I refuse to believe this isn't bait considering you posted 1999 Senritsu as your example. Bravo

But I’m talking about them? Boy you are dumb
> Pandering has nothing to do with good character design
Objectively wrong. Look at persona 5. Full of shit design that doesn’t make sense for a bunch of thieves. Who rob a bank dressed like some kind of opera singer? But he is cool at that’s what people want so they praise it. It’s that simple

I'm probably an outlier, but I've never cared much about character design as commonly understood. I feel like the whole field of character design is similar to the fashion industry: form over function, "looks cool," etc. I'm more interested in characters per se, as actors in an interesting story. They can look like ordinary people with ordinary clothes. What makes them interesting is what they do, what they want, the challenges they face. I guess you could say I prefer subtlety and restraint in character design.

that's because you don't know what character design is, other than the "it looks cool" archetype

ok smart ass. there is lots of character focused simple designs out there. or read a fucking book if you don't care about the design part.

A restrained character design is still nonetheless designed.

This but do Gijinkas instead. Join some community of Gijinka making enthusiasts.

>Gijinkas
those are empty designs without character or world building

>> No.6681519

>>6681515
>worldbuilding
OP didn't mention any of that
>character
Skill issue. Your Gijinka characters don't have character because you're NPC with 0% creativity. You should be able to pick an object, humanize it and then give it character in visual details to further describe the real life function of the object in its human form.
Gijinka practice has all you need to get subconsciously better at making characters and being creative. It also isn't as autistic and attention whoring as OC circlejerk

>> No.6681520

>>6679951
Worst possible advice.

Come up with stories even short ones will do fine. Then dive into any tangentially related information like documentaries photos or historical articles. Figure out how the character fits into the story then play around with the roots you're building off of.

>> No.6681521

>>6681519
Oh also, an easy fix. Instead of drawing gijinka of a generic object, draw a specific object like your favorite mug or your car. Instant character. Your problem is just not being able to depict it because you're a tard

>> No.6681528

>>6681519

why do you assume my skill level? I'm aware of everything you said. stop projecting. the Gijinkas i see are all one dimensional characters. the character needs a world it cant exist in a void.

>> No.6681533

>>6681528
You're fucking autistic, you know that?

>> No.6681536

>>6681528
Anon, a one-dimensional character is still a character. You're moving the goalposts, character design doesn't have much to do with how much dimension the character has.

>>6681533
Calm down mate, not everyone who disagrees with you is autistic.

tho imo no matter how good the design is people lose interest if its one dimontional.

>> No.6681553

>>6681551
Sure, but we're talking about how to improve character design, not character writing. No amount of character design will give a character depth, design itself is a shallow look at the character no matter how much it tells you about the character themself or the world they're in. Character design has nothing to do with character depth.

Understand what pleases you on an abstract level.
For me, it's upright triangles.

>nooo I want to do stuff that others will like
Then you will be miserable and go creatively bankrupt. First find your groove, then expand from there.
