If you are a /beg/inner or /int/ermediate in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.
Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the drawthread with fundamental exercises.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS wide using one of the following methods:
1. screenshot the image and post that instead
2. change camera capture settings to something smaller
3. send to computer and resize in MSPaint

TRY TO BE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK.
When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help. When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

I went in to this piece with the specific goal of leveling up my detail, iterating on it until I figure out just what made my previous "works" look pathetically beginner. Good dozen things I figured out doing this.
I was thinking what the next iteration would be, and I was thinking it probably is more color. But I have no interest in making turbo fancy illustration render whatevers, I'd be happy if I can just make sketches as cute as the real japanese artists I look up to :3. And for that two-tone is more than enough.

This caused a shitstorm the other thread.
I've been drawing for 20 days. This drawthread on /g/ started this phase for me https://desuarchive.org/g/thread/93234065/#93240247.. It was just a shitpost but I was really surprised I had any ability to draw even that shitty face. Though even that took way longer than I'm willing to admit.
I have NEVER even thought about any basics until that two weeks ago, when that failure of a noodle reimu forced me to think about proportions and shit.
Hold on, I'll explain.
What I've realized is that 3D stuff is just incredibly intuitive to me, this is why you can't believe I've never drawn before or practiced any basics, at least in the context of art.
But what I have a lot of background in graphics programming and stuff. Linear algebra and topology, I've been practicing spatial thinking with mathematics for like 7 years.
I had an anon validate this theory, they told me they never could understand drawing 3D, not until they started doing 3D modeling. Then it just clicked for them.
Doing computer graphics can give you strong 3D intuition. I bet you will find that pretty interesting, I certainly do. Never would have thought my maths-oriented brain had anything in common with art.

Cool drawing, but the jaw is too far forward. I bought a small skull for 15€ on Amazon. It's smaller than original size, but it's based on an accurate scan. That thing would help you a ton and you can pose it in different perspectives.

>>6672109
Beautiful line work. The weakest point of the drawing is the neck. The thickness of it might be accurate, but it borders on a male neck. Consider shaving off the neck, preferrably on the right where it attaches to the back of the head. Observe for movement instead of making it too straight. Her head is turned, so there should be a gracul movement of the sternocleidomastoid (look it up). This is not to show off your anatomy skills, but is a vital part of the movement and gravefulness of the figure in that pose. Step 2 is to look up the trapezius and how it relates to the neck in space. The body is not attaching to the head in a believable way in the drawing.

I will share a quote with you.

Nobody tells this to people who are beginners, I wish someone told me. All of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But there is this gap. For the first couple years you make stuff, it’s just not that good. It’s trying to be good, it has potential, but it’s not. But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is why your work disappoints you. A lot of people never get past this phase, they quit. Most people I know who do interesting, creative work went through years of this. We know our work doesn’t have this special thing that we want it to have. We all go through this. And if you are just starting out or you are still in this phase, you gotta know its normal and the most important thing you can do is do a lot of work. Put yourself on a deadline so that every week you will finish one story. It is only by going through a volume of work that you will close that gap, and your work will be as good as your ambitions. And I took longer to figure out how to do this than anyone I’ve ever met. It’s gonna take awhile. It’s normal to take awhile. You’ve just gotta fight your way through

It's over for me. All my life I've been afraid of failure and it's the same with art for me. I have this subconscious inner blockade that makes me do literally ANYTHING but drawing. Everytime I take the pencil into my hand, I dread the hundreds upon hundreds of hours it will take me before I will produce my dream works, and all the failures on the way to that point.

Then I fucked it up coloring it. Three features got bigger. The face wasn't great to begin with.
Drawing faces at this size is pretty hard. I'm using an HB 0.5mm lead. I might swap it out for a 4h lead.
I'm also curious how many beg are digital only and have no concept of working without zoom and ctr z.
I tried going over it with a white gelly roll pen and had some interesting results. You can almost blend it like oils. I could never get it to match the rest of the tone.
I think I'm going to do some larger scale faces. It's so hard working at this scale.

I' don't know if it is correct to do a red line here, because you're doing the right thing: Working from reference and doing the grinding, no one should interfere with that, please keep drawing this, as much as you can.

But you said something about the face, and I know it's very discouraging when faces don't look nice, that's what we all want deep inside "At least let me get the face right goddamit" lol. My advice is to simplify the face features, as much as you can. Less is more on faces. Don't delineate lips and teeth. Don't detail noses, avoid the detailed hair, use shape blocks to insinuate a hairstyle, without the hair detail in it. . Just that.

Keep at it man. Do the sketches, all the sketches you can do, don't bother too much to polish them neither, just keep drawing more. Leave the color process for later ahead.

There is a Japanese-borrowed internet slang term for art made with simple tools, "Oekaki". I adore the style, it very much brings you back to 2007. Pure soul.
I'm using Gimp, but since I was a total beginner more or less, I wanted to keep the complexity of my tools down. I know this oekaki style can look great, so I can just focus on drawing, not worry about learning fancy tools or debating what kind of lineart I want to do. I'm also using a mouse, so that gave me another reason to go with something easy to work with.

>>6672747
Haha.

I mean you don't really need any formal math background even for graphics programming, I didn't know anything advanced when I started. You learn it all by doing, actually that's the best way to learn. But eventually you need the formal theory, or you'll be stuck a self-taught amateur.

>>6672923
>Did you use reference for your both of these (/g/ thread and this one) or all out of imagination?
What's with this binary thinking on this board?
There is no single reference. But I obviously looked up and took inspiration from various sources. Isn't that what all artists do?
I've gathered like hundreds of pics in these couple weeks to learn drawn various bits and pieces.
A lot of it is just redraw until it looks good. Takes forever but once you get something that looks good, now you know how it's done.

Oh, that makes sense now. Well, to each their own, you can make some crazy good looking shit with a Mac 2, why not with a mouse and Gimp.
If you allow a recommendation from now on, do sketches on paper to get your ideas down quickly, drawing with a mouse seems like it takes a ton of time, so a pencil for sketching and then you translate it to digital seems like a good process.

This was the source.
I get more motivation to continue from a finished product. I've tried mass figure drawing. I even tried following vilppu in a couple of his videos. That turns me off. I have a bad history of not finishing things. It's personal with me. Maybe I just need to tell myself that I've completed enough shitty sketches and go back to timed figure drawing.
The other issue is reference source. I'm generally doing this from my phone in the daylight and even in the shade the ambient light makes it hard to see so grinding out one is kinda easier. This phone has shit backlighting, but it was marked down 90% so I couldn't pass it up.
My background in miniature painting makes it so that I'm better at shading and color than drawing (although you wouldn't know looking at this one.) I enjoy that part. It makes grinding out the form worth it.
What I'm effectively doing is creating my own adult coloring book.
If course, if I did crank out a lot of figures, I'd have a lot to color...

Literally no master, no matter how talented they were, could draw and shade from imagination in 20 days, within 3 drawings, even if the figure was slightly off.
Do you really think this attention starved nigger is unlocking some kind of arcane drawing knowledge and skipping all the steps that every artist has to tread?
Why do you think this attention starved nigger never clarified his process beyond just saying this:
>it takes a lot of time bro! im perfecting every pixel!
Don't let yourself get demotivated or demoralized because while he doesn't care about whether you're feeling alright with your progress, he's just trying to make himself feel better.
I'm already making a mistake by giving the attentionwhore attention here, so don't be like me and ignore him next time he shows up. One thread did it the right way: they did literally ignore him. He immediately began asking "why is everyone ignoring me?" so that should make his intentions pretty obvious.
>how do you know this?
Because I used the same cope when I was starting to draw. My drawings looked like shit, even the stuff I was trying to copy, so I would replicate it or even trace sometimes to impress the people who were curious about my progress. Then, I'd insist that "it took a super duper long time but I made it!" It made me feel better about myself and how shit I was. I'm guessing this nigger has no friends so he's using us as a proxy for that. There.

There's probably no convincing you can't believe in the graphics theory but
>could draw and shade from imagination
Where did I say this, and what the hell do you guys even mean by this??
I did not draw or shade or even pose it in a vacuum, I copiously referenced the artists I liked, I've said this a couple times already. There's indeed NO WAY IN HELL I would have ever figured any of that out, if I tried to just do my own thing.
This is the method >>6673101. Just fucking copy, BUT NOT THE WHOLE, just the patterns. Like, big-picture patterns too. Like for the (passable) pose, if you just have the hips forward the pose works by default. That's what I noticed looking at copious amount of art. Once the big picture was alright, I started iterating on the smaller patterns.
This is how those machine learning models work too. They don't practice loomis or whatever, you get pretty far with just patterns. And even the diffusion process is somewhat similar to what I did here.
There, again, my compsci background giving me unorthodox ideas.

Instead, do 84 studies of the 3 masses (Head, rib cage and pelvis) transformed into boxes, that's 252 boxes, but way more interesting to draw. Take whatever references you like, then you will probably be able to finish it. Do the last half of them from imagination.
Now, about if you should or not: It's an exercise meant to drill you all kinds of box positions, if that is a goal that you want to do, then do it. You will never have difficulty drawing boxes after it. But if it isn't part of your skillgoal, like, if you want to be an anime portrait illustrator, then don't, it will be a waste of time.

Well, apart from drawing anime girls I would also be able to draw backgrounds, buildings, and objects like tools and weapons, and those are quite hard-edge with sharp angles and boxy silhouettes. And spatial reasoning is going to matter pretty much everywhere, even if I just wanted to draw cartoon sluts.
Thanks for the idea anon, I'll consider it when I make my choice.

I'll apologize in advance, I can't give good advice. But I'll try. I'll also be REALLY cruel, since that kind of feedback helped me tons.
Anyway, it has a pretty bad beginner look to it, it goes to the "bad probably western pixiv art"-bin.
The silver-hair girls head looks bad, the hair and the face. It has this strange lack of depth and shape to it.
And if you do apply the box method to the head, it should become immediately obvious why. It has no coherent 3d shape. The back of the skull points completely in the wrong direction vs the face. And the face itself feels like it's 2D clipart mashed together.
The red hair girl looks much better, since its a far easier angle. Though I think the "snout"/jaw is bit too forward.
Something's off about the shading too, but here I'm even more clueless to what. Might be the lineart too. Try to find some artist with simple two-tone shading akin to yours, and try to understand what they're doing better. Try to copy a style.

Yeah, I think this is probably true.

If your box isn't tied to anything, just floating in the void, it's easy enough to just fudge it and make something that looks right out of whatever lines you put down. But that's not intent, you can't look at a box and then draw it correctly, because all you've practiced doing is making mistakes and then figuring out how to paper over them - you never actually practiced drawing a box in a perspective that you chose *before* putting down any lines, and so you never strengthened the skill of knowing the line you want before you put it down.

Nobody said it was easy, unfortunately. But think about it as if you're training a new set of instincts (training yourself to associate something you see/imagine with hand movements), and keeping the other set of instincts (knowing what is good art, analysing and critiquing) for once you're done. Think about it, surely it'll be rude to critique a professionals art while they're still not done, right? Same goes here, first you draw, then you look at your art and analyse what you've improved on/needs improvement.
Basically I'm not asking for you to turn your brain off, I'm asking you to turn that specific part of your brain off first, and turn yourself towards the skill of copying something or aspects of something (eg, what shape does light cast on an apple? What is the outline of an apple? Or maybe, this artist draws _ in a specific way, let me try to imitate that.)

It doesn't have to be fleeting. Many people pursue careers they don't really care about, for the prestige and money. I'd go so far as to say that there's nothing actually wrong with wanting to be an artist, even if you don't really enjoy drawing. Hell of a lot better as a dream than "I want to conform to society's expectations of what I should find desirable".
>I dont want to draw them now, cause it'll be bad.
Yeah, that's going to be a major issue in pretty much anything you might want to do in life. Practice always means doing something that you're bad at. You must fail. If you don't fail, then there's no point in practicing.
>But how do I start the years of practice? No one seems to tell me that.
Nobody is telling you that because the question is incomprehensible. You just draw. Like you just make some lines in the shape of whatever it is you want to draw. Or sometimes make lines, and try to think of a shape afterwards, because crippling brain fog stops you from approaching the empty canvas in a more purposeful way.
You said you can draw basic geometric shapes. The next step in the perspective guides is to draw a box. Can you do that?

anon, i really love how "form conscious" you are. All your hatching wraps around the primary forms, and I can see you've given a lot to the fundamentals. In this respect, please keep going and don't stop. You're doing great.

As practice moving forward, I think you should also start making a regular habit of master copies. Find artist you like and copy their work. It will teach you to "good shape" to your drawings, and you will have a better idea on how to approach complicated objects, like faces, vegetation, and clothing folds. There are just some things that are difficult to study from life, and I can't explain why. It just is.

My drawover is not really a correction, but just a demonstration of how I might approach it. You need to find your own favorite artists, and the combination of your favorite artists becomes *you*.

Good luck

for the love of fuck anon, I am at my wit's end, so go do the following thing and pyw once you're done or I'm not helping you anymore because then clearly none of us have the ability to help you. You said you can draw elementary shapes, right?
Go draw a square, then draw a triangle on top, then draw a rectangle next to the square, and then a parallelogram on top. Now you have the basic shape of a cottage or house! Add whatever features you like, or go google and copy a a window or door or anything.
Alternatively, if you're into anime, draw a circle. Then draw a triangle on top of the circle, just slightly lower than the midpoint of the circle. erase overlapping lines, add two straight lines to connect, draw a short vertical down the center, and slightly below that, a short horizontal line. finally, slightly above the midpoint of the circle, draw two ovals on both sides of nose, and add a line on top of each. done, now you have a bald face.
If you can't do either of these, you're literally hopeless and below kindergarten level, and none of us will be able to help. I recommend seeking professional help in that case.

Sure. Can't start figuring out how to draw until you can already draw well enough. So it goes.
Anything else? Some lesser thing, that you might imagine yourself drawing, but isn't so important that you'd feel like you'd defile it by drawing it badly?
>I basically crawled along with those exercises, my lines are not at all accurate,
Did you do the early exercises that specifically train line accuracy? You can just do those again if that's what you're struggling with. Or, if you solve your core brain problems and get into the habit of drawing regularly, you can practice line accuracy at the same time.
It doesn't really matter if your lines are shit, what I was getting at that you have already intentionally drawn lines, to make pictures of boxes, so there really shouldn't be any obstacle to drawing lines to make pictures of other things.

also this is subjective but right now I'm not getting dnd warlock from this design. The clothes, esp the sweatpants, look fairly modern, and I'm not seeing any magic related elements. You don't have to do the typical stuff, but since you're adding a magical creature, could he be a beast tamer or something? I was under the impression that you did all of DAB, so he must have taught you how to do form studies, or construction studies. Lesson 2 or 3 I believe, it's the same principle, you take a head, see it's form, and turn it into a simple form aka a box.
