what's so bad about drawing porn? I've been thinking about it for a little while and the deeper I dig the less it seems to matter. what's the big deal? what's gonna happen?
I'm also apprehensive about posting coom but I don't really know why. is it shame? is it too personal? do I think it's "lesser art" and that I'm debasing myself? I think my ego is getting in the way of things a bit, no one really cares if you draw porn.
the people who like your drawings are going to enjoy it, and the people who don't are going to ignore it, same as anything else

Thanks for your message anons.
Same the last posters, I don't really know why I am apprehensive about it, of course anyone that can hold a pencil has at least a dick or porn and I don't consider it lesser art (except if it's a skill issue) . It's shame just as it is when people find your porn folder and it's feeding into a vice.
I don't share my art a lot so even when showing my sketchbook full of cowboys I am uneasy so maybe a part of showing a real personal side and your taste to others ?
Anyway I did worst ( I worked for a game studio that made NFT ...) so I'll survive the shame and draw lewd when I feel like it.
Talking of which, Graves live rent free in my head so here is a very rough animation, I'll slowly add detail. I'll resume the last art trades after this one is done.

reminds me of old schoolbooks from 80's, similar style was used for illustrations there.

That being said pose looks unnatural and unbalanced, neck is overly long, it looks like you're hiding her hands and how long her legs are compared to torso is a bit sus (but that could be just me). But it's not bad per se, I like her expression and your style has a bit of charm to it.

And you draw like a girl.

My bad, that drawing definitely took less than 30 minutes, it's just that the other two things I drew yesterday were finishing something I'd worked on for a while, and tracing someone else's art to try and internalise it (I would never post that anywhere).
Here's the other thing I worked on, more than 30 mins yesterday but done mostly the day before. Attempting to draw realistic fire via trial and error.

Studies and tracing refs are encourage you should have o shame in posting them! It would help you visualize the shape and understand your favorite drawing. Fire is pretty hard to draw and give a natural look. You can try to had more randomness and less triangular shape in the flames.

Wow another gob enjoyer!
I really like your pose and gesture on that one . Also those rats are pretty cute and SFW friendly, grats.

>>6694291
You can change your streak frequency to every two days, three days etc etc up to a week. I would not draw in advance as it's kind of cheating on yourself but I get works gets in the way and it's annoying. Also have a big week coming and I might have to change my posting frequency as for a day as I am not sure I'll have access to the internet or be able to draw.
In the end the streak is just a number, the idea of the website is to help you get in the drawing habit and for some people seeing a number go up is the boost they need.

Here's today's. Still no verified account on DAD but I sent that email.
Today was a bit of Fun With A Pencil and then that Line of Action website, as recommended by someone I know. My main issue was accidentally attaching the legs to the spine on instinct from drawing stickmen, instead of attaching them to the pelvis. Still lacking knowledge on how to take a wireframe skeleton and turn it into a series of good outlines.
Oh well, feels like progress.
Also, how many of those old man faces did you guys do when working through Fun With A Pencil? I wanted to power through a fair few pages in one day but it felt like the implication was that You should do at least one for each page that shows them? Or would you just skip on past once you get the gist? I'm guessing the answer is "more practice is always good, do a few every day why don'tcha?"
>>6694103
Thanks! What do you mean about line quality though? Personally, the more I force myself not to have a tight grip, the worse my lines. Whenever I want to just get a line right, I end up tightening up my wrist and fingers a ton.
>>6694465
>Studies and tracing refs are encourage you should have o shame in posting them!

>>6694859
keep it up anon, great worksheet
one thing i have to recommend asap is, choose one routine and stick to it for a few months (like at least three), every person on this website will recommend you something else and you'd get overwhelmed or not make progress as you'd be switching around (bridgeman, loomis, new masters academy, this YouTube video, that YouTube video), fun with pencil is GREAT but to me it just feels too advanced at some points, I'd personally recommend (if I knew you irl id insist) to read Keys to drawing instead and follow up with loomis figure drawing for all its worth (then head drawing)
the reason for that is, fun with pencil helps you with imagination drawing, but it's hard to draw from imagination if you haven't built up your visual library yet, with that Keys to drawing help, as they teach you how to draw from reference, you build up the hand eye coordination + visual library, and then when you move to loomis figure drawing for all it's worth, you already have something to work with, from there you can go loomis head and hands and then you could go all the way back to fun with a pencil if you'd want, i just think fun with a pencil is a bit too outdated and assumes certain things that it's not the best first-first book to read; if you're unsure, just feel free to safely stick to fun with a pencil, you can't gimp anything with that
another site like line of action is sketchdaily, i like that one more personally
also what program and tablet are you using?
glen vilppu is also great, just gets a bit boring at times

>>6694859
Yeah fun with pencil has a LOT of old man heads at the beginning. I started drawing by redrawing manga cover and yu gi oh card I loved so I can't tell you how many page you should draw. I'll say you should be careful not to burn out with books / study and draw self indulgent piece to have fun with drawing and then looks in those books for the specific parts you want to improve. Figure drawing is actually pretty difficult even for advance artist( I hate them) so I would be careful with those and try to deconstruct the body and each member instead of try to get the gesture right at your level. Anatomy first and later simplify it to find the gesture if you like those.

>>6695012

Woke up with wrist ache from repetitive strain. Uh oh.
Any reccs for learning to bank facial expressions? Just saw someone post a stickman drawing with very basic but shockingly expressive faceial expressions. Even though I could very very easily copy the drawing, I never would have come up with that facial expression, so I want to sort of bank them in my head to think of more easily, if that makes sense? Maybe other people don't really relate to this and I just have issues visualising facial expressions.

this really does sound better from your description and seems to address some of the issues I have. But it's 226 pages long (2x that of FWaP), so idk. How long did it take you to get through it? Or rather, how many pages could you do per day reliably?
>also what program and tablet are you using?
Wacom Intuos Pro 5 Large, Krita.
Large is massive, I would've gone for a smaller size but this was the cheapest one locally. I have heard CSP or SAI are better than Krita, but Krita I can just start using for free without having to worry about pirating or paying for. I like it so far.

>>6695835
Thanks, yes I always like drawing older character. Nice studies, you manage to keep the character consistent in each drawing and the proportion / perspective works well. Maybe you can detail the muscles a bit more if you want but I don't think you'll go back on it.
>>6695852
Nice style and value!
The muscle of the torso are maybe a bit too define for such a frail stature ? Anatomy looks good, keep it up!

>>6695909

>>6696154
Be mindfull of your wirst anon, you can go to your pharmacist to by wirst glove that will help with the strain but you'll need to push more on your arm no to overdo it.
For facial expression I'll just type it on google image and you'll find a lot of people making refreence sheet of character in various emotion state and maybe some from old disney 2D animations.
as for the ref sheet of character you really like, you'll need to know basic anatomy and some character design to be able to make interesting armor / cloth. You can already try to do it so you'll see your shortcomings and so you'll be able to pinpoint what is the next thing you want to learn.

For today I wanted to do some trad with charcoal before going back to digi. I filled a page of my sketchbook with some random ref found in the man ref thread.

>Wacom Intuos Pro 5 Large, Krita.
Both amazing, I have this exact setup except i swapped to csp eventually but krita is amazing.
L is good, very good, anything less is supporting bad drawing habits.
I don't remember how long it took me, just consider art as an companion instead of a marathon or a sprint. If you do 30 min of studies or 30 min of drawing for fun everyday you will easily improve. Just do as much of the book a day as you enjoy and then draw what you'd like to do eventually. Just make sure you don't burn out.
great heads, I can tell you're focusing on the contouring, but either you push extra hard on the stylus or you have really high sensitivity, try out a brush that is round, but changes opacity (not size) based on pressure. Spend a day or so just fucking around with the brushes, krita has good default ones, even the pencil, then stick with it for a long time before you branch out to other brushes.

Do you think he looks too buff or ripped? Is the rib cage too wide?
I was actually going for a more athletic type since the character is basically a Drow raider so if he's just ripped than it's fine but if you think he's also too buff then i'll probably scale it down.

>>6696154
>How advanced would you consider yourself
Not very high desu. I can make ok characters but suck at interesting concept art and coloring/rendering.

>how long did it take to get to this point,
Many years but not because it's that hard. There are people who have surpassed me and took less time to do so. I'm just a very slow learner.

>and what would you call this sort of thing?
This style? Anime/realism. A lot of people do it i think.

>Also, what did you have to learn to be able to do this?
I'm actually not going to answer this since i think there are better people to give this advise. But i'll mention something that i didn't do but should have. Use references even when drawing from imagination. They are not cheating, they will actually help you learn how to do it properly next time.

Like other anon said, there is an uneven style between your figure design (elegant, solid confident), and the clothing details, like folds are all over the place, and the lines are wobbly, BUT THE DESIGN, is PERFECT.
I would said to think of clothes like some hard material, like cardboard, too make them look solid, simple and elegant. And avoiding "folds"and crevices, as much as possible. The design alone is so good that there's no need to add lines of detail to "fill" anything here.

Anon, you just gotta fuck around, figure out what you like, it will take a while but it isn't a race. In general stick with brushes that are circle/potato shaped and change opacity with pressure, but don't change size.
Krita there is a "weighted" stabilizer setting, you can try it (don't put it high though, just like 1/10 of the slider maximum, to see if it makes the lines flow more naturally. Also have you drawn any figures yet?

Yeah the face has problem but I didn't wanted to redraw it entirely ... Looks like there is no way around it.
You are also right for the studies, I don't make them often as it bores me and I rather learn by doing finish piece. Maybe I should take a few hours to learn the proper structure of a face to be able to drew it from every angle without a ref (I am heavily reference dependent for anatomy).
>also he has no traps which any hunk needs.

Good point, I always suppose the angle will hide them but nope.

>but his bottom half looks like it's a whole age group too small and he has tiny legs, though, and coincidentally the horse's legs don't look beefy enough to carry a tune let alone a grown ass man

Maybe they just skipped leg day ... I actually though they were too big and reduce them quite a bit. I should have work outside of my canvas to have the right proportion.

Okay, fair enough. I'm usually too lazy to figure out what's good, so I just ask people who are more experienced what they like and then go with that.
>Krita there is a "weighted" stabilizer setting
I hate it. Anything that introduces a delay feels horrible. It was making my writing much worse as you can see in picrel, until the 387 samples option just made it utterly unusable. 10 sample count was 10% (the slider is not linear tho, it can go up to 1000) and even that felt annoying and delayed. Do I get any benefit for disabled the "Basic" stabilisation or is that something I should keep on? Like, is it introducing any delay? Weighted feels better than not with this brush. I don't really like how obvious it is that a stroke is imperfect.

I liked the wrap she had going on for her chest in the initial sketch, the way it was noticeably at various angles - just like boxing wrap, you're not going to be able to secure it with parallel lines, you're always gonna be going up down, and all around. Great execution on all the shading and lines and stuff, though.

To avoid burnout and boredom. If you're getting demotivated by the grind you either have to move on or get back to it later. Alternatively, there's a million other materials that'll teach those same fundamentals, maybe they'll connect with you better. 1. I feel like the construction lines obscure how shit the drawing is. Felt okay about this loomis face until I removed them. Idk why it looks so incredibly bad.
2. Traced this image I saw on /v/ because it struck my how good the art was for a random sketch. Do animeposters like that really study all this facial stuff too? Draw a 3d face and write over it? Feels hard to imagine.
3. Traced a 3d model I did a while ago. Doesn't feel good. Feels like I'm one of those AIs you feed a 3d render into that outputs a drawn style based on the image.

It's because you aren't thinking in 3D forms
you are just making it up

try drawing the shapes individually - a ball, a pyramid etc - try sticking them on the overall shape

When you get good enough you can stop with all the construction lines, or reduce the amount of lines you need because you can "feel the form" and sorta figure it out

If I posted a personal DAD/sketchbook thread on /ic/ and kept making the thread for a few months would I be banned?
There's plenty of great stuff on the dad.gallery but the comment section under each artwork looks pretty dead, I really want anons to destroy my studies, smash them to pieces and brutally mog me with each update in order to help me figure out what I'm doing wrong and improve at a steady pace.
I wanted to start this journey on deviantart but fuck them, twitter doesn't seem to be the place for that, artstation and cara.app are for professionals, sketchbook forums are dead and /ic/ looks like my only hope to receive honest feedback from other artists.

If your goal is to get constructive feedback that's a mistake. People here won't be analyzing your studies like that. If you do it, you do it to keep yourself accountable. I don't think any anon will be banned here for posting their work of all things. That's what everyone wants to see in /ic/, and no one delivers. This is an IMAGE BOARD, remember? (But don't upload freaking 5000px 2MB pics though)
I'm doing a Bridgman master study on a thread just for that. I'm doing it because I'm cleaning all the drawings of the book putting them in sequence, actually that task is (MUCH) harder than copying the fucking drawings at the end, lol. So I know that could be very useful (having all the Bridgman drawings put together in order) if anyone wants to do the same.
What I'm saying is that if I'm gonna do it, why not post the drawings anyways? I'm not doing it for critique, I HAVE TO DO IT. That's all. If you expect feedback then I don't think it's a good idea. You have to be committed besides that.

Probably way too early to be getting into this, but I found out Krita had an animation feature and had to try. Here it is, 24 frames at 48fps. I should probably do it in lower resolution so it's a smaller file.
To that end, what resolutions do you all like to draw as a base, and for what reasons?
>>6704218
But where's the skill? Where's the meaning? All it is is rendering, there's no other drawing skill used when tracing renders. Idk, hard to find the line between that and say, when I made a render of a 3d model of a complex shape I wanted to draw for a handdrawn-looking thing. In that case it was just a perspective reference but to me some aspect of learning to draw is being able to just start doing pencil strokes straight off instead. Maybe I'm misguided?

Plus the thread was getting slid off the board too quickly. I thought about using Deviantart but it's just an AI cesspit and not what it used to be. I tried using a forum and the site went down for 48 hours I just didn't bother with it because that told me at any moment my progress could be pulled because the web admin stops paying for hosting. Twitter is awful because one wrong move and I could get my account shadowbanned.

I really don't know a place to post a sketchbook journey other than just /dad/ (which isn't really ideal because it isn't a "gallery") or just streaming 24/7 and uploading the recordings to youtube.

Are you talking about the CRITME app or posting here on /ic/?
Also, I'm posting some original content in case my previous study wouldn't count towards the streak. Do I have to reach out to Vastian to start the count?

Honestly I would be surprised to hear he's not a working professional already.

Have you tried with the CRITME app though?
This stuff is a bit frustrating by the way, it feels like art communities are dead even though this is supposed to be best time to be an artist or whatever. How long ago were your attempts?

>> No.6705835

>>6705831
The first time I did something like that was 3 years ago and the 2nd time was just about a month ago. Same exact posters telling me “it’s not your blog”, “this is a good idea BUT you should use X thing instead”, “you should use this course instead” , to the usual suspects showing up in the thread with the same reaction images, etc. I carefully planned out what I waned out of the thread but I knew it wouldn’t work out in the end because 1) the archives don’t archive images anymore, making me use a Mega drive for my work which defeats the point and 2) the local shitters on this board annoy me to no end.

Yeah, you would think there would be several new sites for artists that would have sprung up by now but it’s the opposite and it doesn’t look like an alternative is coming any time soon.

There's like a million discords with spergs that'll crit your art. Sinix's discord comes to mind

I thought okay maybe I'm just a retard, let's listen to this anon and go check the Sinix discord and holy shit... No, not even close. We're lucky we still have redline anon.

Every /ic/ discord have the same idiots in it. Art discords outside of this place don’t crit and just give spam emoji on my posts or just flat out dead. I remember there was a thread not too long ago where I was talking about how people just joined to drop their socials and go ghost, never to post again. It’s like that, too. Then an anon said to me “well you should take the initiative to post so others will post, too!” I tried that (again) in this discord that’s completely dead and suddenly 2 people in the server started posting again besides this 1 legitimately autistic person. At least the teacher in the server is still alive so I can ask her questions.

But no, discord is not a solution, either and /ic/ discords (as bad as they are) are the best you can get.

>> No.6705901

Could try being friendly and not spergy and art friends you make can give you crit.

And they'll have context having known you too.

If you are unable to make friends you can also pay to get quality critique.

As a lot of people pointing you can use DAD and add CRITME in the title so people will give you feedback. Don't be greedy though if you ask often you won't have any after a while, also don't hesitate to crit other DAD to increase your chance of getting one. Critics is pretty rare in general, more people want to receive than give them.
Anyway good luck with your challenge! For that specific piece I would be careful with the right side of Vilppu's face the eye and nostril are a bit too low and the pupils look on the right side and not into the camera. Proportion of the face and skull are really solid well done!
>>6705049
Thanks!
your piece is looking great for the challenge, only thing bothering me is the left horn that shouldn't come as close of the center of the image and the red line on the pecs. Is it paint? If it's suppose to be a wound it need a little shadow and depth. Overall great composition and perspective.

Let's go! Jumping to animation already, you don't need to draw all the frame, I personally do 12 frames at 24 FPS ( like most of the anime industry). Looks solid! Need more stretch when the balls goes up, don't be afraid to really push the stretch and squash.
>>6705742
Amen, now imagine where he will be in 3 more years.
Let's all keep drawing and improving DADs.
>>6705819
Awesome looking head! No need to post OG content with your study as long as you draw 30 minutes each a day. You have to contact Vastian once you have an account on the site (Email Banana at lastartiststanding3@gmail.com if you have the mailer problem) once you reach a streak of 14 so you can be accepted on DAD discord. Be aware that using CRITME might not work until you reach level 3 (5 streak) as the mods have to manually review your post and they don't appear to other users.

Great job on this one! Is this an OC of yours? ALso, I think you're Urazi right? I like the way you light your scenes a lot, I'm the anon who lost the fanart of your fanart the other day.
>Vilppu's face the eye and nostril are a bit too low and the pupils look on the right side and not into the camera
Looks like my Villppu is having a stroke, huh. Thanks for the feedback, very helpful!
>You have to contact Vastian once you have an account on the site

> Is this an OC of yours?
Yep, he is all over my account if you check the pages. I fell into the western/cowboy rabbit hole after drawing him.
>I think you're Urazi right?
Indeed!
> I like the way you light your scenes a lot, I'm the anon who lost the fanart of your fanart the other day.
Thanks! My lighting is a 100% inspired by nye_igneous on Twittter, he also does this low lit scene with rimlights only. Thanks again for the deceased fanart!
> Looks like my Villppu is having a stroke, huh.
... I wanted to write that but I thought it was a bit harsh as it's really not that bad, eyeballing proportion is always a struggle and I am in no place to judge as I can't draw face properly either kek ( but it's getting there).
>I thought I was supposed to reach the streak before I was allowed to open an account on the website

Thank you for the kind words, and for the advice, animating on twoes at 24fps was what I saw recc'd in tutorials too.

Where would you recommend meeting art friends?
>Twitter
Algorithm aggressively shoves politics in your face and tries to make you upset, even if you refuse to like or reply to political posts.
Reduces your visibility massively (first ~20 replies in every thread are paid accounts) if you don't pay for Twitter Blue.
>Facebook
Requires you to use your real name (goodbye nsfw or anything weird) and bans all your accounts if you make alts.
>Instagram
Massively reduced reach for every type of post other than Reels (tiktok style videos), shows everybody Reels from people they follow more than it shows them pictures by people they DO follow.
>TikTok
Having to compete with eyegrabbing video content when you just want to share your pictures.
>Mastodon/various fediverse
Mostly dead, the most active ones are aggressively anti-AI and anti-NFT, which I have nothing to do with, but don't want to feel like I'm being scrutinised for that stuff. Mastodon.art just disconnected from another big mastodon for some weird disagreement between admins, nothing bad actually happened, they just disagreed about something
>Tumblr
Mayyybe? I know they banned NSFW at some point but I haven't heard much bad about it recently.

BTW, did this thread hit the bump limit? Are we in need of a new one?

No, not yet. New thread is being made when old one hits page 10 or is completely lost.
