If you are a /beg/inner or /int/ermediate in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.
Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the drawthread with fundamental exercises.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS wide using one of the following methods:
1. screenshot the image and post that instead
2. change camera capture settings to something smaller
3. send to computer and resize in MSPaint

READ THE STICKY:
Completed: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uwaXKU7ev6Tw_or__o8ARpUb6r2rCZYJGqwSFV9AD98/edit
New collaborative sticky (anyone can edit): https://hackmd.io/UMnZVhNITW-T2wZpHw6d0Q
Old: http://www.squidoo.com/how-to-draw-learn

RECOMMENDED BOOKS FOR BEGINNERS:
Read the stickies

TRY TO BE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK.
When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help. When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

Get familiar with the idea of form and its planes to shading patches of value and understanding the structure of objects/anatomy. Merely thinking in terms lines and smudging will limit the amount of accuracy that you can produce in your drawings. Generally you want to simplify these complex subjects to an understandable amount of planes (that's covered in the video, also he has other videos on parts of the body like the face and hands, they follow the same idea).
You don't need to know every muscle of the body right now, but try to lean towards this mindset, it will help not just in creating convincing anatomy, but drawing in general.

>> No.6662127

>>6662110
Gesture is about drawing the natural curves of the body, action and weight of the character. Maybe you should learn other subject first before learning gesture. Copying more action poses and you'll start to see the movement and weight of the characters. Drawing is a jorney, don't rush it.

>> No.6662131

>>6662075
>>6662082
Everyday, an anon doesn't understand gesture, and everyday, some other anon tells him to copy.
First, let's define gesture, for that, I will borrow Da Vinci: "Build a figure in such a way that its pose tells what is in the soul of it. A gesture is a movement not of a body but of a soul." Basically, draw what the pose tells, not what you see. Now, this might sound like mumble jamble, but it's the mindset that you have to be on to draw proper gestures
So, for some actionable-ish advice: you should see how your favorite artists do gesture and emulate them, if you don't have it, take an animation you like and look at the production sketches. Then, you go back to your figure drawing session and try to apply it, you will be frustated, but you have try again.

kind of already posted this one on another thread, but this time a put some sketches i did on te side before doing the center piece, which was also a stupid sketch that i just got excited and started drawing more on it lol.
That's also becoming a problem i think, i can hardly think of something and actually drawing it, its aways a random sketch that i see potential and start focusing on it. Maybe its because im focusing too much on just studying but i don't really know.

>> No.6662185

I mean, it's pretty good, a little stilted and that's not how triceps work, but your craft is almost there, so I don't really understand what your problem is. You are having trouble coming up with ideas, but you do random sketches just fine? How is that a problem? You can sketch to generate ideas.

>> No.6662203

I mean that i wanted to have an idea end up putting it into paper in an organized way, and not relying on the chaos of my stressed mind in random periods of the month. I think that's what i'm feeling is off, but maybe it's just me.

i plan on adding transparent grey for wings
and eyes will require a bit more shading.

/!\ BLOG ALERT /!\

Hello it's your favorite "never drawn before" anon here again.
My second piece of art, >>6658381 ended in utter failure. I truly have zero skill at posing. But the style, or lack thereof, made it look even more pathetic. I'm not even going to post it, it's so bad. Friend described it as "bad pixiv art", truly traumatizing words. The only thing worse than that is being called a "deviantart art".
BUT. I decided with the first Reimu already, that I WILL try to learn everything I can out of every piece of art I made. Mainly because I start with a face and cute faces are incredibly precious, every time I pull it off it's still a miracle for me.
So I tried to solve the style problem using just the upper body. I decided to double down on Oekaki and just try replicate it. Not straight-up copy anything, just incorporating ideas from this and that.
Huge success. I mean I'm not there yet, but I started drawing literally two weeks ago. It just feels unfair. Though of course I'm still utterly useless at posing and anatomy.

Oh also to the anons accusing me of larping being a beginner, I figured out why you think that. I know pic probably doesn't help my case, but this is interesting.
It's only the depth that I just have an intuition for. That's literally the only thing I have going for me. But where do I get that intuition?
From years of graphics and physics programming. Linear algebra and topology. I've been practicing spatial thinking unknowingly for a long time.
This was only a cringy powerfantasy theory in my mind for the past two weeks, but then I met an anon that told me a story.
His drawings were flat and two-dimensional, he could not comprehend depth. Not until he started doing 3D modeling. Then it just clicked for him.
It makes so much sense now. I would never have thought my maths and things oriented brain had anything in common with art and drawing anime girls. But it does.
Or maybe it's just autism. Probably is because I'm at 2000 char limi

How do you draw gesture exactly? I don't get it.
>draw the movement
Yes, I know, but how do you do that? How do you draw movement? It always confuses me because whenever I see people do it they still end up with a silhouette which makes it look like they're drawing the silhouette, but they're not, the silhouette is simply appearing as a result of the gesture. It confuses me so much and neither Proko, Michael Hampton, Vilppu or Steve Huston explain or show it in a way I can emulate. Is there a Russian academic approach to gesture or some concrete way of just capturing movement?

"gesture" it's an advanced concept. This >>6663509 anything else is bullshit. For an entire thread filled with 30 year old pre/beg/s always complaining about how Chad Pencilhands has "talent" and is good at drawing because he doodled as a kid while you are bad because reasons, it's actually stunning how little insight you have. You can't draw for shit because you never learned to observe and copy you fucking retards. Learning gesture before you've even copied a single rendered image or photo is akin to trying to learn parkour before you can even crawl, it's that terrible of an idea. You LITERALLY just need to copy photos and paintings you like, get it as close to the reference as possible, and do this for a LONG PERIOD OF TIME. THIS IS YOUR MOST VALUABLE PRACTICE. BUT YOU WON'T DO IT BECAUSE IT GETS BORING AND YOU DON'T LIKE TO DO IT. This is why unmotivated drawfags who NEVER even consciously practiced drawing, but they drew as a kid, will always mog your most diligent Loomisfags, gesturefags and vilpufags, and this is proven time and time again by the posters in this very thread. Retarded pre/beg/s need not even reply, I already know you'll be coping in overdrive over this post, go fuck yourself. It doesn't matter if it's life, or a photograph, or another drawing. It's the mileage that matters, the practice. Adult beginners are compressing what KJG spent his entire fucking childhood doing into the span of a year or two, and encountering obstacles he never in his life even conceived of. There is no version of KJG who skipped those years of drawing the things he saw, and went straight to fucking gesture as step 1. There is no version of Vilppu who did that, no version of Hampton, or whoever else. That is simply not how artists prior to the internet came to be - there was literally no way for it to even happen. You couldn't get into art school as a total beginner, and if an adult wanted to learn to draw they simply *started drawing*.

But that is the reality of the begs ITT, who turn to Proko or Vilppu or Hampton who start with teaching gesture. Begs who have essentially not drawn anything since kindergarten, who have made fewer drawings from life in their entire lifespan than KJG probably made in a single week as an elementary schooler. Filling sketchbook after book with drawings from life is the step zero that textbooks and courses don't mention, because it's an assumption that literally every student they've ever had has already been doing it for years.

There's a difference between the way German is taught to native speakers in German schools, and the way German is taught to adults who want to learn a second language. The adults' learning rate is dramatically accelerated, they can learn information much faster than children. To take advantage of that, the adult course is inherently rigorous and structured, with tools and procedures for efficient practice: a far cry from how native speakers learn - they learn via countless hours simply speaking with their parents at home! Art, and accuracy, is the same. Adult begs need not practice accuracy in rigid formulaic ways; they too can just go draw from life for months on end. But they can't do *neither*.

Furthermore, and getting into this post >>6663689 - the reason copying as accuracy practice is popular is *because it's more fun*. Most people don't enjoy drawing from life anywhere near as much as they enjoy drawing from art they like. But it's the same damn thing.

The reason you don't see professional artists talking about it more is because they don't call it """accuracy practice""". They just call it "drawing".

This is so fucking stupid. Do you think KJG never drew something and then thought "hey, this part doesn't look quite right, that line is too long"?

I genuinely don't know what broke your brains on this. Draw from a reference, evaluate your mistakes, repeat. That is how every human has learned to draw since the dawn of cave art. The only differences are the mediums and methods.

it's not about "getting it done faster" like it's a fucking chore, it's all about accumulating knowledge. maybe you don't find drawing fun and that's why you want to speed through it with this shit, but i would rather spend 8 hours doing "drills" that actually feel helpful to my development instead of bullshit i can barely comprehend. i understand what gesture is meant to be for but it feels very aimless right now for somebody of my skill level. i don't know why that fact makes people seethe so much.

Your rendering is terrible. It lacks any sense of anatomical correctness, the dividing lines are too sharp in some places and too soft in others. The shadows are way too dark. The hands look like you straight up copied them from a shitty 3D model program and the proportions don't make sense (look at that thumb, those knuckles and how they relate to the fingers, it's just shit all around). This is just the abs btw, seeing as the rest of your picture ISN'T EVEN FINISHED. But let's keep going for a little while longer. Your head looks retarded; he has almost 0 forehead. I don't understand what's going on with the nose. The hair is cartoon style while you were obviously trying (and failing) to get a hyper realistic look going on with the abs and hands.

If there's any positive feedback I can give it's that at least you use dark darks and light lights, but that's literally the only positive thing I can say about it.

The reason you're gonna cope and shit yourself over this is because you lack the observational ability to discern that your work is a piece of dogshit, because you lack experience in studying/copying other works.

That's the ultimate truth. If you are late 20s - 30s beg, it's literally impossible to keep up with artists who already drew for decade before they first held hands with a girl.

I think any modern image that excites the Picasso Trigger gets me to draw it (pic for influence). Had to keep extending her torso.
>Not as good. I suspect you found the subject more appealing
That could be. Wanting to distort the anatomy is often a sign of that, it's intended to convey the sense that she's melding with her violin. I guess the presence of certain elements on the page appeared more important.
