How tf do you get freelance work? Do I need a million followers on twitter first? Do I send in my portfolio to companies? Do I have to shill myself at conventions?

I want to be a comic artist, but any advice on freelancing is appreciated

More luck than anything. Luck + talent + hard work.

I've designed some t-shirts for pro wrestlers and at the time only had 400 followers on Twitter. A definite trick that I found is doing art for people with middling fame. Not so famous that they'll ignore you, but just enough so that when they share it your art will get a decent amount of views. It also helps to just do what you are passionate about.

Look for job postings and apply. Keep in mind that just like any job, they're going hire either the person best for the job or the person they like the most. Strive to be the former, but there's usually competition for that so if you know your work isn't shit then don't be discouraged.
For some reason people on the internet seem to think you have to wait for people to contact you first, which is a pants-on-head-retarded idea. That's not how 99% of other vocations work, and just because that CAN be how you land an art job doesn't mean it's THE way to land an art job. I got a comic job by applying to one. I got commissions by posting my commission sheet in a place made for people looking for artists to commission. I have fuckall social media clout and never been contacted out of the blue, yet I've been self-sufficient for around two years now with my only income coming from art, without even really being all that great -- certainly not "pro-level" by /ic/ standards (hell some of the drawings I've done on off-days would get me called a beg), but you don't need to be.

even for comic art, you have to apply to jobs? Do I send my portfolio to publishers, or find writers? Or, do I try to find an agent first?

Not OP, but I have a related question when it comes to building a social media following. So just posted some new art to twitter after not being active for awhile. I used to get likes and retweets immediately especially if it was fanart for a popular series.

It’s been 24 hours and not a single like. Meanwhile, I post the same image to Instagram and I get several likes just after a few hours

Is it Twitter’s new algorithm or am I just not as popular on Twitter than I am on IG?

>Do I send my portfolio to publishers
yes, most of them have methods for submissions

if you've got the money to pay for one then sure, it's a great way to break in since agents usually have connections.

>> No.6667138

>>6666136
also just post your art to deviant art, social media...everywhere. If someone likes it they'll ask you if you do commissions or take on freelance work for comics. There are always writers looking around and asking, not sure if the pay will be good in that case though.

Here’s my advice as someone who fucking hates commissions because I have a massive ego and think I’m too good for them.

1. Use Twitch to stream your art if you’re confident it’s competent. I had endless commission offers even though I wasn’t advertising.

2. Make it obvious on your twitter profile that you take commissions and have a pricing scheme in mind.

3. Post coomer shit.

lost soul, you are doing yourself harm by even being there and not outside with friends/family/potential friends. This place is a deadzone for all kind of human emotion besides hatred, lust and (arguably the best) arrogance.
Everyone here just fumes with the need to self validate.

Start speaking to your family members, unlist all watched threads, clean up your youtube "watch later folder" , do exercise and exercise personal hygene.
Then just go fucking talk to people, don't turn back and think to yourself "well i had more fun being alone in my damp pit of a room doomscrolling".
Just do things with people and if you are truly focused on getting better at art, then you will, without ever touching this fucking radioactive zone.

>CTRL+F
>NICHE
>ZERO RESULTS

My advice to you OP is to find a niche.
That's what works for a lot of modern (web)comic/webtoon artists nowadays.
The comics market is extremely saturated, and talented artists are a dime a dozen because of the internet, not to mention a better artist from SE Asia or another third world hellhole like me costs 1/10 of a Burguerman.
The thing with niches is that you don't compete with everyone, but just a small fraction of it.
Maybe you won't be the best comic book artist out there, not even close to the top 10% but maybe you can be the best (insert something here) webcomic artist and that can give you money and possible jobs down the line.
I know a fujoshi that posted yaoi webtoons for fun on deviantart and other places like that and she landed a DC comics gig 1 year and a half ago because DC is trying to get a new audience since their deal with Webtoons in 2021.

There's a lot of scouts from comic book publishers out there, they lurk on art websites and social media and look for fresh new talent all the time.
I know wwo HUEzillians that landed comic jobs with DC recently because they're popular fanartists on instagram and their niche is superhero characters in anime style...
Kids nowadays only care about animu and mango and the big 2 now that.
Demon Slayer and other popular manga is influencing the decisions of Marvel & DC in the last 2 years, just look at Marvel pseudo manga that's totally not a Demon Slayer rip-off lmao.

Everyone and their mother know that yaoi and furries are a goldmine, but there's niches inside niches.
Like you can make money off femboy furries or bara furries or "straight" furries (lmao) and so many other subniches.
It's the same thing with yaoi, there's plenty of subniches, you have feminine ukes, masculine ukes, no one is a uke, switch, etc...
Do your research OP, there's plenty of niches out there.

Well, good luck then, because there's thousands of those out there.
Bonus tip: It's not about art quality or story, it's about standing out in the vast sea of artists, that's why niches are such a good idea.

Yeah, but dreamworks and Illumination (Mario and Minions: Rise of Gru) are making a lot of money nowadays and their stories are shit too.
>Good stories are ultra rare
Here's the thing, it doesn't matter if your story is a masterpiece or garbage, you know why?
Because if no one knows about your work (marketing) then your "good" story will flop all the same (don't rely on word of mouth this shit rarely works)

talk to people, dropkick your work out of nowhere into people's feed, shill your work to people on social media, hop on popular hashtags to grab clout from people, yell to grab people's attention, hand over your work to people for free to get them hooked, make youtube videos about yourself (but undercover) to appeal to people.
