How do you find your own style without just copying your favorite artists?

>> No.6655682

Experiment while you draw. Break rules, emphasize different aspects. Try different mediums. Combine different mediums. It takes time, 10 sketchbooks from now youay have some style going on you developed without copying

While copying your favorite artists you will eventually find how to do it in a way that is the most convenient for you.
That thing will be your style.

Really like the design aesthetic he is going for in the CX volumes, they feel like covers of literature.

Take from at least 3 artists (ideally around 7) and if they're not all of similar artstyles then all of those influences + your own interpretation of the world will result in something at least a little unique. So if you pull from Toriyama don't also pull from 5 artists directly influenced by him.

Not OP but how do you find artists who REALLY inspire you?

I've only found 1 or 2 that really tickle that itch, which I don't mind, but I'd always like to be more rounded out.

>> No.6656452

I just copy whatever I find most appealing.
Never about style, just do what what you like the most. You cant go wrong.

This, your style will come out of what you make. It comes naturally from how you do things.

Same. I ended up trying to do a study on a Tokyo Ghoul volume and it took me double the time it would take to paint ad hoc.

His painting is something else.
How does he get those backgrounds to have that schizophrenic flair? Or those lines of texture in Kaneki's face in the OP pic?

copy more than one of your favorite artist.

Some people are so hung up on style that they develop nothing.
If you just draw a lot, observe your own work and improve, "style" will come almost naturally.

I have noticed that one’s handwriting artle correlates with their art style, even just nonartists and their doodles. You could say it’s confirmation bias, but their handwriting and art style usually make sense and fits their personality and such as well. Really, it’s logical.

As others have said, it’s simply a natural result of who you are. All those things that had an impact on you: the media, imagery consumed, music you loved, all those thoughts you’ve had since you were a child, those moments you’ll always remember, your genes, your parents, your childhood home... it all shaped you. Though similar to countless other humans, ultimately unique. Now as you produce your own art, have faith that the truer it is to what you believe in, care about, want to express, love, the more your distinguishable value will shine through.

It genuinely takes time. When I was in my teens my taste was shit and my influences weren't "good" ones so I'm glad I didn't start trying to gimp other styles until my 20s. My early 20s I only found one or two artists I liked enough, but every year following 24 or so I've been finding more and more artists I aspire to draw like as I learn to sort through more shit on social media and in the work I consume.

Interestingly Ishida's on record saying he doesn't share his brushes because he wants to avoid people drawing too much like him. I assume he made his own brushes.

You heard wrong, there are like 20 different effect brushes and textured brushes used in these pictures, not to mention the images and patterns pasted in for the collage effect. Learn more about digital art before trying to emulate something like this. Doing it with two brushes would be like trying to airbrush with a hard round or trying to paint chromatic aberration by hand.

Also, it’s a result of countless hours of drawing. The more time spent drawing, the more set the way you draw anatomy, lines, etc. will become, for better or for worse. So after x amount of years drawing, your style should sort of reveal itself. Some people ultimately do not have that much of value to express, nothing new to say.

Yeah I struggle to find my own style as well. I either just draw as close to realistic as possible or just straight up copy another artist's style. I don't know how to just have a style, seems extremely difficult.

I just downloaded so many pixiv images then look at them then apply them in my drawings. Then casual onlookers claim I have good style.
