If you are a /beg/inner or /int/ermediate in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.
Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the drawthread with fundamental exercises.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS wide using one of the following methods:
1. screenshot the image and post that instead
2. change camera capture settings to something smaller
3. send to computer and resize in MSPaint

TRY TO BE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK.
When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help. When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

Obviously perspective. But you already knew that because you've clearly practiced it a ton. You just need to work on it even more, the outside window and the back tiles look choppy.

But another thing, you need to get even better at designing original stuff. This process can be pretty fun and honestly it's a great perspective practice too, since it's all about shapes. I recommend pic related, or studying design principles from guys like Raymond Leowy. I think you're pretty good, you can only get better now by drawing everything you draw well already even better, and more precisely.

One thing bottom is doing much better than you is using multiple elements shrinking as they're further from the viewer. Look how much it's reinforced. In yours, the shrinking is only kind of noticeable in the tile pattern and weakly in the ceiling decorations.

Thanks I was using 5-point perspective because linear perspective fucking sucks for backgrounds. Distorts everything to shit. 5-point fixes that problem but its a pain to get right.

It seems like some people find rotating an ellipse easier to understand than rotating a rectangle, and then they use the ellipse to find the rectangle. The ellipse is tangent to the top and sides at their midpoints.

To me, this is so backwards that it sounds like insanity, but I guess it's just a different approach. Personally I do the literal opposite.

the thickness in your lineart is way thinner than the sketch. So you don't really know where to place your lines while tracing that huge space. For example, the shoulder in the linear is clearly anatomically wrong, while in the sketch is properly placed. Basically, keep practicing, this is normal.

I'm no real expert so this is mostly from observation but i think the light and darker parts should be more expressed. If it's sunset then everything should be way more darker than it is, the body casts shadows on the other parts, for example the raised leg making it even darker. I think Krenz had a nice part on his translated video about lightsource and cranking levels up and down to understand the darker and lighter parts. You could also check some images of characters under sunset to see what kind of balance you should aim for

I really enjoy this sort of rough and simplistic paint drawing. The common digital art style is fairly saturated anyway.
I have been considering developing a style which retains its simplistic charm but has some more complexity to make it more interesting and unique. But I don't know how I could do that at the moment. Do you have any suggestions? I personally gravitate to more cartoonish drawings as it is.

I think it looks absolutely nothing like the style of the poster you uploaded originally. That poster was blocky shapes, hard color transitions, and pushed highlights. Yours is, like, mostly the opposite of those things?

I'm going to do community courses to get better at drawing and painting.

My old university offers a freehand Drawing course (graphite, etc), and a watercolor course.

I eventually want to move to their oil paint course. They are about $265 each. They're open to all experience levels, and my last drawing course was years ago at the same university. Each class is about 2.5hrs on Saturdays.

Does it sound worth it? I just want to have good enough skills to realize my artistic ideas.

Should I take both or just one?
or just dive right into both?

Look at one color at a time. Here I separated out the white and black areas from the original image. Do you see how different the shapes are from the ones in your portrait? It's a semi-minimalist style.

it's 100% because of the lighting, light coming from top right of the image is notoriously boring. It's also a very neutral lighting both in color and strength, which doesn't really emphasize the dramatic scene.
For harder to fix stuff, the pose is static and linear, you don't really feel the motion of pulling and the struggle. The expression is also too bland and communicates only a mild discomfort instead of agony and pain.

I will definitely experiment with the outlines when I next get the chance. I personally feel like they should stay, but should not be as heavy as they are at the moment. This is the final version of that, where I made most of my finishing touches for the time being. They like to use different types of outlines depending on the angles. Stop copying anime. You may draw anything from the sphere, cube, cylinder, and conical forms. Familiarize yourself with mechanical perspective and geometry and get a good sense of volume and space by understanding how and where forms overlap to create the foreshortening illusion of depth and perspective. the ones i've drawn are really shitty but here:
top row and left column are 1-point and 2-point perspective hitting four main viewing angles: 0 degrees, 45 degrees, 22.5 degrees, and 67.5 degrees. 22.5 and 67.5 are just halfway between 45 and 0 or 90. these are easy to draw because you just need the ratio between the left and right halves to be correct, either 1:1 or 3:1 or 1:3.
everything else is derived from applying these rotations to an angle you've already drawn, but if you look closely quite a few of them are symmetrical, so you probably only need to really memorize the shapes of a few.
at the bottom is how you could construct one of the rotations manually. we're just constructing a 1:3 ratio in perspective to get the new vanishing points.

Decided to finally get back into drawing, decided to watch through the first proko lesson on gesture drawing while writing down everything that might be important and attempted to do 12 5 min gestures.
There are some things that I know right out of the bat I messed up on
>Proportions are consistently fucked, keep forgetting to draw the stomach making the figure look really weird.
>my attempts are foreshortening just make the limbs look like they were different sizes
>Most of the lines were really messy, making it hard to really see what's going on. This only got worse when multiple limbs over lapped each other.
I'm sure there are some other things I probably missed (wouldn't mind getting some critique) and I know there are some things to work on, will probably read through an anatomy book to help with the proportions/ missing stomach, watch through the second lesson of proko and will go back to drawabox to do the 1st lesson again for fundamentals + exercises to do before hand.
Felt kind of nice doing this, even though I fucked up massively. 4 and 8 felt like they were a step in the right direction.

4 and 11 were your best ones, I am noticing that you are too focused on form on the gestures, while important, the best gestures focus on the movement, flow, or any other word that would describe what the figure is doing. So, a few tips:
>As you are starting, try to draw from nude reference, it's easier to learn this way, because clothes might confuse you
>Don't stay locked at gesture, it takes months to get at a good level, you do gesture and go learn other things.
>Look at gesture drawings of other artists, Kim Jung Gi is a recommendation.
>Watch the video of Proko and Marshall critiquing gestures, it will give you a few pointers.

Idk what Proko teaches but you seem to be too obsessed with the outline of the figure. You need to focus more on what the body is actually doing and that can be represented with just a stick figure. You can also mostly ignore proportions as long as they arent too whack. Use better ref as well, don't use clothed figures for gesture drawing and try to avoid poses with a lot of overlap as a beginner.

Watch this video if you haven't seen it before:

i think gesture, especially with such complex dynamic poses, is a bit too challenging for you rn, it's like banging your head on a brick wall. The notion of "Start with gesture" is kinda misleading and not the way to go. Try drawing gondolas, i remember drawing gondolas helped me a lot when starting out

Now that you say that all of my bodies are really wide, thank for you telling me that and I will attempt to slim them down somehow.
>>6654834
That does make a bit more sense, just did gesture stuff since I heard doing that was pretty useful as an exercise and working on proportions. Might try to separate different topics to different days and shorten down the gesture stuff to do as exercises before a drawing.
>>6654841
As soon as I posted it, I forgot to say that I felt like 11 was pretty alright and yeah I guess I got too caught up with the form stuff when proko talked about the cross contour lines, just put too much focus on it. Might just go through the video again and attempts to just use lines more.
Will make sure to stop using clothed references, as soon as I tried to do 10 I immediately realised that I should have gone full nude for my references. Also, now that you said Kim Jung Gi, I do remember just hoarding a bunch of his books so I might go through his stuff and see how he does it. Will also check out that critique video.
>>6654852
Didn't know that the overlapping references would kick my ass so much, so I'll take your advice and go try to use simpler poses with minimal overlap. I'll also try to improve my observation skill when it comes to actually drawing what I see of the body rather than seeming like I just kinda winged it (which really shows in 2, 6, 7 & 10). I've got the keys to drawing book on hand so I might work on going through it to help with improve that.
Also, thanks for both the video and showing me your drawing of the reference, helps me a lot seeing what I messed up on more and I'll make sure to watch through the video and to write down what it focuses on.
>>6654874
I still feel like the gesture stuff would be good to do even though I'm messing up with them, but I'll probably cut it down to 6 5 min poses instead for the time being
Also, how do drawing gondolas help?

MUHHH GESTUUUREESS!! 30 sec gestures to do glorified stick figures with all joints head torso and pelvis is enough to build up a visual library, everything else is retarded. Just copy characters from movies/anime/games and do quick 20 min studies of them.

I hate the faggot who pushed this gesture meme unto us

I hate Proko for being an intentional beg trap in general. (Proko's content is all aimed at intermediate artists but he markets it at beginners because it raises his maximum possible revenue.)

About KJG, look for his ballet sketches, those are, imo, his best lessons on gesture.

idk man, it worked for me. It's a very chill and freeform way of drawing, just start drawing whatever shape and make it a gondola. If it comes out looking like shit it's funny, if it comes out good you're a drawing god, shrimple as that

I will be honest with you, I thought you meant the boats, I remember see these guys rarely but never knew their names.
Wouldn’t actually mind drawing this to work on forms, although I wish I had a decent ref of these guys.
