/beg/ & /int/ - Beginner and Intermediate general

If you are a /beg/inner or /int/ermediate in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.
Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the drawthread with fundamental exercises.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS wide using one of the following methods:
1. screenshot the image and post that instead
2. change camera capture settings to something smaller
3. send to computer and resize in MSPaint

TRY TO BE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK.
When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help. When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

For shadows in digital painting, does anyone regularly use that method where instead of manually picking shadow colors and adding them to flats, you make a new clipping layer set to overlay or hard light, fill it with a dark blue/purple, and then erase the parts with light? Do I have that right? Is it really a shortcut like some people claim?

Gigachad. You are already miles ahead of a lot of people just by virtue of finishing stuff instead of grinding out meaningless sketches over and over.

I think that artwork is solid for someone with your experience, and the only thing off about it is the proportions. I did a quick edit, there's a lot of distortion around the hands and clothes so ignore that, I just think this proportion cuter. Basically from what I can tell the main issue is the length of her torso, it just seems very elongated.

Also I did a small redraw of that front section of her dress, it helps if you can show how the front part of it wraps around her body like in the ref you posted.

Another thing it could use is more saturated colors IMO.

You are doing well though Anon I hope that isn't discouraging.

Nonononono you're doing it wrong

The problem and mental block I was having with the torso height/hip position was due to me being hell bent on implying its position with the gap between the top and the skirt as visible in >>6647528. But the damn forearm is in the way, didn't plan ahead. So I just gave up on it and thought it was inoperable. The pose fucked it, better luck next time.
But after letting my stupid eyes rest for a bit, I saw the obvious solution. Just make the damn skirt lines straight and have that imply where the top stops and skirt starts (which then implies the hip)!!! Such a simple solution to such a supposedly complex proportions problem!!! LITERALLY NOTHING ELSE HAD TO CHANGE
JUST ONE LINE IN THE SKIRT

>Another thing it could use is more saturated colors IMO.
No no no either. I see way too often artist fuck up cute sketches by doing a mediocre ass job at coloring them. So I'm not even going to try, I can hardly draw, why do you think I'd pull colors off???

How many heads tall is she even supposed to be? I count at most 6 which still seems within reason, especially when looking at various art out there.
Honestly the amount of variation I see in proportions in art that I like is crazy now that I'm taking note of it.
I wish I had a fresh set of eyeballs.

>>6648193
The knees should probably be partially visible there. Didn't bother to fill every single detail since I was quickly modifying the pic to see if any of it even worked.
I should just stop with this reimu already and move on. It served its purpose well, taught me many things.
I will be able to see in a week or two when my eyes have reset, what exactly that is you're seeing.

>>6648111
I used no real references (esp not tracing), no nothing, zero "cheating". I want to see just what can I do as-is. Thus all the proportion problems. Definitely gonna refer to something going forward. If I care to continue drawing that is.
My background in art is being a chronically online anchientfaggot with an addiction to cute touhou girls. I can only assume the amount of art (and art practice material) I've seen and judged gives me an idea what looks good or not, thought that clearly gets me only so far.
I might have some knack for 3D stuff because I have a background in graphics programming though ..

Thanks, will do. I was drawing a lot of hands at some point, but when I actually checked frequency it was something like a good chunk once every two weeks or something.

i was just trying out some theories in watercolor for pic related, and thought that it would be great to ask /ic/
the idea is that the characters are lit by candlelight, so a warm light source, but with probably a hint more red for aesthetic reasons
im generally content with how this is coming out, but its obviously missing something more. ideally id come back to the shaded areas and hit it with more cool gray to darken and tone it
this is just a rough try (on a print of the actual picture) so i can come back to another black and white print and start from square one
i appreciate any input

I think this one actually came out above average for my skill.
Also I think you overestimate the artistic evaluation abilities of normalfags. There are tons of people who are better or worse than me doing commisions, for more or less money, most people will be fine paying under 20 bucks for even the shittiest most worst artists imaginable just because they want... something idk what they want. I mean like, from the normalfags perspective, throwing away 10 or 20 bucks on a piece of shit art piece is fine because thats just like a coffee or a sandwich kind of money, and however it turns out I guess they are satisfied with it.
Point is its nice to be able to draw and get paid for it, because I am always learning.
Also, everyone who has commissioned me paid for my highest tier, full render. I drew this one >>6649113 and something like this I would charge $2.50 NOT ADVERTISING and yes, for the record I do think that I am overcharging 50-75 percent of my actual arts value

I see, thanks for the insight. Very nice that you can make a few bucks off your art. Can we see some of your fully rendered works? I'm pretty curious now.

Some people will tell you paper is better. I don't have a personal take. The best is whichever one makes you actually practice.

Why are all art beginner books so old? Right Side of the Brain is from the 70s, Keys isn't much younger, Loomis predates fucking world war 2. Vilppu is astonishingly modern, despite being close to 30 years old.

Like, I get that the fundamentals themselves haven't changed. But that doesn't mean there's not better ways to teach them; content and delivery are separate areas. And all those old works (especially aside from Vilppu) are at a huge disconnect from modern learners - obviously there's the physical/digital divide, many beginners nowadays are digital-first and/or only. There's also a gap in intended audience, most of those old books are aimed at people who already know how to draw, the notion that most beginners are starting from literally zero is a fundamentally modern phenomenon. And of course, information aside, the language and subject matter is often dated; since they were written by somebody born in the 1930-50s and are being read by someone born in the 80s-2000s.

All that is to say, even if there's nothing worth changing in the core content of those old books, you'd think somebody would've updated them for the digital age and made a killing. I mean, half the posts in /asg/ are because one Chinese dude repackaged Keys to Drawing for a modern audience and it built a cult following.

> physical/digital divide
there is no divide

> aimed at people who already know how to draw
no? keys to drawing is for pure begs. as is right side of the brain, etc. A lot of books exist for pure begs already.

> people starting from zero is modern
what? people have been born with zero experience for as long as humans have existed. teaching materials have always had this in mind.

the /asg/ thing is because moon runes are fetishized here

There are hundreds of books about drawing, design, animation, sculpting and various apps like painter, blender, photoshop and so on, most of them very modern.

Pic related. Just sorted amazon drawing book section by publish date. It is just nobody read and or heard about them so nobody can vouch for their quality. Meanwhile some books survived the passage of time for a century and every other pro learned from them. So it is easy choice between
>brand new book nobody ever head of

I found that "how to draw anime/manga" have the best explanations, bridgeman for instance is a fucking meme, a trap set up by crabs only hardcore autists can grind trough that my tip: buy books that teach the things you actually want to draw. Wanna draw cars? Buy a book about drawing cars. Wanna draw manga? Buy a book about drawing manga, simple asa.
