Thoughts on Jess Erin Taylor's art?

She's got a highly distinctive style IMO, and she's pretty notable on social media. Last I checked she grabbed the attention of Guillermo del Toro

Why don't more self-taught artists draw like this? I've noticed it's mostly the atelier fags who learn to render so well

>> No.6640600

Kek because you have to be a retarded masochist to do a 30 hour cast study on your own, and because it's hard to do with 1 pair of eyes. It's seriously important to have someone experienced guiding you along for something like this.
On your own, you need seriously mentally ill levels of obsession and self-hatred and you have to rely on shitty unqualified opinions from randos online unless you know some good artists who can chime in.

It's fun when you are in an atelier and when the teacher is competent. And when there's others around you and you encourage each other and share thoughts on each others work. Alone it's just miserable and difficult, no matter how much you love drawing working on a purely technical drawing for dozens of hours is mindnumbingly tedious and you will need to put in like 2x the effort you would if you were in a competent atelier.

I can't even imagine how that can take 30 hours. There must be a more efficient way to learn this shit

>> No.6640616

>>6640609
30 hours is 90% of poking at a piece of paper with a needle and then when that needle wears down after 15 strokes, you need to sharpen it again and then you autistically dab the paper with a kneaded eraser in case you made a mark too dark. Repeat 500000 times.

Yeah I understand that but it takes dozens of hours. The drawings in OP are definitely done faster and the artist uses a lot of shorthands for shading, but something like pic related can easily take dozens of hours and doing studies like it is where you learn to do what the artist in OP does.

That's not too bad. So 150 hours. Without a teacher it'll take much longer, so say 5 times as long. That's 750 hours. If you draw every day for 8 hours, it would take a little over 3 months

I mean, they seem competent in everything except hands. I assume it's because they aren't very good at drawing stuff from imagination, which is something common with artists that draw more realistically. In these two examples of hands, they did a very very poor job. Are you denying that?
