I wish I had some grand secret, but it's probably just doing a lot of fundies and always comparing to pros, even if it's a little soulcrushing sometimes. It sounds boring but grinding for the perfect figure and face is really fun to me. One thing I completely reject is copying from reference. I only draw from Imagination and sometimes trace.

I started in 2015, I think. I was drawing for as long as I remember but I started digitally in 2015. It was all just a bunch of autistic steven universe and fnaf fanart until 2019 when I started taking drawing more seriously. 2022 was my favorite year cause I feel like I started getting better at painting and I was becoming more experimental. I stagnated a bit in 2023 I think so I hope to draw and improve more later on

I know there's a lot more improve in drawing, anatomy, etc. but my advice is to start studing colors/rendering/values.
The 2023 drawing shows that you already passed the line in which your line drawings look weird, so just by improving your coloring you'll be above 80% of the drawings that are posted in /ic/

Right when I started drawing I was hoping to get good within 5 years. So half way there until I have to ‘be good’ according to the me from 2.5 years ago. Not that I’d trust my opinion on art 2.5 years ago.

Been focusing a lot on shapes this year. Getting my ass kicked but feel like there’s scope for improvement, which is nice. Better than not knowing where to take my art.
When I started drawing and felt form for the first time, I thought I could just rely on that feeling for everything.
My younger sister asked me if, now that I’m learning how to draw, can I draw good hearts. Completely embarrassed myself drawing terrible asymmetric hearts in front of her, then tried to explain that I’m not really a 2d shapes kind of artist.
She gave me a sort of pained ‘I see’ and then dropped it.
Anyway, friendship with form is over, now 2d shapes are my best friend. Or rather, 2d shapes are now something I think about at all and I still love form.

That's a meme that originated in the concept art community. It's impossible for a self-taught artist, who has to learn anatomy, color theory, perspective, etc, to get good in merely 5 years. So don't regard yourself as a failure if it takes a while longer.

Also I know those feels exactly, Ive been using stupid fundies to construct everything from scratch, but that completely distracts you from thinking about shape appeal and design. Form is important but its only a supplemental tool really. At the end of the day, drawing is a 2d skill.
I also blame internet art teachers for marketing themselves so hard to vulnerable beginners that never even copied cartoons in their life. Vilppu, Huston, Proko, Nu masters academy, CGMA, Schoolism all those shisters need to be beaten brutally, they are all hacks, every single one. I honestly only respect Sinix and Krenz right now.

I vibe with a lot of this. But I don't put the blame on those art teachers. for starters, the first thing I was told to start with was keys to drawing - observe the world around you and draw the shapes as you actually see them.
but that concept was completely alien to me. like it required a completely new way of interacting with the world at such a fundamental level. so I kinda skipped it and went for a structured courses as the dirty INTJ I am.
But all art courses rely on the student understanding that they must look at the world around them and draw the shapes they see. in the same way that the most basic algebra 1 course relies on you knowing that if you have 2 apples and I give you 3 apples, you now have 5 apples. if you have any trouble with that, you shouldnt be taking any math course at all, even one for beginners. you should be drinking a carton of milk, watching teletubbies and joining in when Po says 'lets count to ten'. which is essentially the equivalent to just drawing your favourite cartoons, or 'just drawing'.
eventually, that primary understanding will click and you're ready to begin learning in earnest. honestly, I feel like I'm not even be at that level yet.
but anyway, I have sympathy for the art teachers. marketing a 'basic' anatomy course is like marketing a 'basic' calculus course for aspiring mathematicians and a 3 y/o turns up to class. don't let the 'basic' fool ya, kid, go home to your juice box.

also, to address your reply to the other anon you quoted, actively hating people's art fucks you up way more than it does them. If you've got a bunch of negative shit in your head about art, it'll fuck with your drawing practice. bad juju

IMO:
Distant goals are poison. Have fun where youre at and meditate on the possibility that you will never reach anything much higher. Like obviously try to make a step forward, but make sure youre attempting a step and not a quantum leap. This goes for everything in life I think. As far as inspo goes, for me, looking at splash arts, concept arts and old masters as goals was pure stress because its miles ahead plus I like cartoons more anyway. I have a theory that as artists and creators, we naturally get inspired by skill that seems attainable at the moment. Which is why you see so many people inspired by anime.

Been 5 years since I started digital art (had quite a few years of just doodling before that but there was barely any improvement). I feel like while there are specific areas which I've gotten better, notably less wonky faces, it's hard to judge overall improvement.
I still feel like I'm just experimenting with everything and figuring things out as I go along. I've considered just properly plonking down and studying a single aspect, but then a new idea catches my fancy. Most of all I'm not sure if my art has actually improved in terms of visual interest? Not sure what's the world for it.

Yep. About the same time frame for me when I noticed improvements. It took a whole year for me to understand line weight. I was /permbeg/ tier until I started getting gud in anatomy. Sometimes I go back to previous works & redraw the stuff because. Now the art takes me longer to finish, but it's worth it because the looks like better quality. I still got quite a bit of ways to go before I ever reach /pro/ tier level.

Anyway the point was how much faster my progress was after giving in and using references instead of trying to brute force learning from construction and imagination.

If i had to guess, it was that male on male combat was strong norm in that era's pop culture, while women being part of the combat was more rare so I took notice of it when I for example saw women's pro wrestling or just basic but rare slap to the face in mainstream media. Women pro-wrestling combines sadomasochism, dom-sub setting, flashy action, show and audience perspective or exhibitionism, woman on woman action, yuri implications and combat. And I think it's interesting real life show wrestling is scripted but risks real injury or even death, while art of pro wrestling is real in the art but it doesn't risk actual injury or death unless the artist want it. So you can safely portray over the top action in setting that in real world would absolutely need to be scripted to make even sense while in art of it you can go wild and still it stays "real" for the characters.

But yeah, it being woman on woman, combat, show setting, BDSM and good excuse to have the ladies in revealing outfits doing lewd things to each other is my main hook.

I think you just need to get better brushes for rendering - and I think your art would improve by doing that thing where you colour the lines, rather than using only black

I'm currently suffering from too much to do. I was going to finish that sketch, but ended up going breakfast then to the park and hiking for five hours. Then we were starving and I made a pizza. Now I'm too exhausted to draw again.
I did get some photos that I might use to make art, pic is the stack of a coal plant behind a tree.
Anyway, when you want to learn to cook, lose weight, draw, maintain you home and car and work full time plus something's got to give. Hell, I bought total war Warhammer 3 and have only played it twice.
Not only that, I did catch up my journal and realized I started that sketch Wednesday. I haven't drawn in for days!
Anyway, sorry for the blog post, but I needed to rant. I think I could make a cool sci fi pic out of this. Maybe later.
