IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.

Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the Drawthread with fundamental exercises.

POST DRAWINGS YOU NEED HELP WITH.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS using one of the following methods:

>1. screenshot the image and post that instead

>2. change camera capture settings to something smaller

>3. send to computer and resize in MSPaint

READ THE STICKY: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uwaXKU7ev6Tw_or__o8ARpUb6r2rCZYJGqwSFV9AD98/edit#bookmark=id.15jx3pyuimvj

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

Hello /beg/ anons. Does anyone know of book other than Loomis to learn about drawing faces? I've used his figure drawing book and it's been going well. Something, however, just isn't working out with Loomis's face method and I'd like to try something else or at least supplement. Any help is greatly appreciated. Is Morpho good? I constructed. Gesture, then laid the spheres on top of it, basically like a snowman going from head to larger sphere for the torso to even larger for the hips. Then more spheres come for the limps and the joints therein. I realize there are some inaccuracies in proportion and whatnot, though. Look at artists work that you like and compare it directly with your own. Generally your biggest issue here is lack of contrast, which can come from hue, saturation, and value.

To be more specific about what I see, her hip is too round sure. But on her upper leg, you made it appear as though her thigh immediately juts out after her knee, her lower leg's thigh is smaller. In the original image, the top of her thigh lays inline with the center line he marked going through the navel, where yours lies below it. Her lower tit also lacks any volume. It should be full, and squished into the ground, where yours is soft and limp. You also gave her heroin chic arms when the rest of the image protrays her as well fed. Her ribcage should also be egg shaped, with the widest point towards the bottom.

While anatomy is very important for an artist to learn, I would say construction, proportion, and gesture/pose are slightly more important when drawing the clothed figure. Even if the figure is wearing a long skirt, you'll still need to know how those legs are positioned under that skirt. Knowing how to draw the most commonly visible body parts becomes crucial: the head, the face, the neck, arms and legs, hands and feet.

so it bothers me that I cant draw from imagination with ok results. theres also nothing wrong with using reference but it feels like a crutch to me. If someone asked me to draw a character on my own with just a pen and paper it would look like complete shit. Focus more on values
Turn yr drawings to black and white and see if there’s variation in how bright or dark they are.
In that drawing it’s mostly all the same shade when in black and white
To make things “pop” you want lots of contrast. That can be caused by having a really dark colour right up against a really light colour. Or something saturated against something pastel. Contrasting colours also “pop”

Maybe try doing some black and white drawings to focus purely on value and then try colour

Good luck anon

Color wise I would say that Power's hair feels to close to her skin (on my screen anyway). You can saturate her hair and/or shift it towards orange. Or make her skin paler, but that might make her look sickly so I'd avoid it.

Also to be fair I'd say that Kobeni's face reads the way it should, honestly if you start changing the mouth 1000 times on this it might make it less expressive. Just probably draw in the eyelashes on the far eye.

Anyone got advice on reducing finger cramping when drawing? I'm using a pen tablet, and I bought a bigger glove because the original huion is fucking tiny and was crushing my pinkie finger and ring finger. This helped a bit, but after 15 minutes or so I'm still getting cramps in these two fingers, and now I'm wondering if it's a posture issue. I've increased the sensitivity of the tablet the most I am comfortable with so I don't have to press as hard but this hasn't helped. Also ordered an even bigger glove to see if that helps.

What is the best posture for holding a tablet pen? I tried to push as light as I can, but then the tablet doesn't register me drawing

>> No.6626138

>>6626132
This happened to me, and I developed trigger finger in my pinky. That causes your pink to lock into a closed position and it won't open. That happens because the tendon swells, and it can no longer slide gracefully through the fascia sheaths which guide it. I suggest you take a break from drawing and ease back into it, otherwise you face months of physical therapy.

Ease back into drawing, 30 minutes a day, then an hour a day, then 2 hours a day. Your tendons will strengthen over time. Hold your pen very LIGHTLY. It's the tight grip that's causing this. Switch to a mechanical pencil on paper, if you can, so you are forced to grip lightly.

I'm actually still incredibly new to drawing, really only started practicing over the past week or so digitally. I did traditional art on paper when I was really young and never had this tensing issue, but I had a much more relaxed posture back then which won't register on the tablet

this unironically helped me at least. other than that stay loose and relaxed and if you feel pain you’re presumably doing it wrong so take a break. some light stretching as well as a sort of warmup could help too. i play a few instruments so I’m used to this sort of thing by now, basically if you feel sore/genuine pain it’s always better to be cautious and take some rest days. Its not a race anyway, 48 hours of rest is better than a minute of injury. The alternative is a lifetime of tendonitis. Lol.

As a beginner, it is important to focus on the process of drawing rather than the end result. Gesture drawings are usually quick, rough sketches meant to capture the essence and movement of a subject. It is not necessary to produce a perfect drawing at this stage.

It is recommended that you do as many gesture drawings as you can, without worrying too much about the quality. The more you practice, the better you will become. As you gain experience, you may find yourself naturally improving in terms of accuracy and detail.

That being said, if you feel like you need to clean up your gesture drawings for further practice, you may certainly do so. Just keep in mind that the goal is to develop your skills and understanding of the human form through practice and repetition, rather than creating a polished finished product.

Remember to be patient with yourself and enjoy the learning process. With time and practice, you will improve your drawing skills significantly.

I meant I tried doing the first exercises of a certain course or book and gave up midway through. Didn't even fully do the first exercise of Drawabox. Every time I gave up it took up to a year for me to muster the courage to draw only to give up again due to sheer distraction. I want to do it for real this time though

There's your answer. Literally just start. Motivation itself is a myth. Or rather, the will to do something comes from starting that thing.
I've found it helpful to tell myself "I'm going to get up and do the thing in 5 second." and then counting down from 5. Works every time.

Would studying a specific construction style or anatomy be a good use of resources from here? Cause that's what I'm about to start doing.

>>6627445
a gesture refers to the pose or movement of a subject that is captured quickly and loosely with quick strokes or lines. It is generally used to capture the overall movement, energy, and feeling of a subject rather than to create a detailed representation. Gestures are often used as a warm-up exercise before starting a more detailed drawing, or they can be incorporated into a finished piece to add dynamism and fluidity. Gesture drawing is an important skill for artists to develop as it helps them to quickly capture the essence of a subject and convey it in their work.

>> No.6627472

>>6627464
this is a very superficial definition of gesture. Gesture is posing. It's body language, it's acting, it's storytelling. Artists need to learn to pose their characters and give them natural postures true to the story

It's NOT squiggly fucking lines. It's NOT an art school exercise. It's NOT something you "incorporate into a finish piece to add dynamism and fluidity.

I guess the reason I even bothered posting in this thread about it is because I'm trying to learn how to use references properly and to not be inconsistent with the quality

I cant seem to find the right balance between polishing a turd and spending the right amount of effort on a piece. Im low/beg/ and ive never really made a finished personal piece, mostly just copies and timed figure drawing. My line confidence is abyssmal and my "art" doesnt have any sense of style or appeal at all. Somehow i do love the drawing process even though i have no imagination or taste

If you have to ask then yeah, use reference. Eventually when you get bored of copying you wanna branch out into autism fundies like perspective and construction if you really wanna get better at "free hand". Copying reference is NOT a waste of time for imaginative drawing, but I wouldn't spend more than a few days on it if you're just starting. I'm also beg though so with a grain of salt.

ALWAYS use references when drawing, especially as a beginner. You need to build your visual library and not using them won't make anyone say "well this looks kind of shitty, but he did draw it from imagination, so it's a bit less shitty"

Do you never go on here and see art done by somebody who seems to be lacking something, for lack of a better word, fundamental? I don't mean fundamental in how it's used in art theory, I mean in terms of being a functional adult. Like any ability spacially reason, or to self reflect. Maybe this is how people who are much more talented than me view my artwork. But I can at least claim to be able to find specific issues with my artwork, which I don't think some people here can with their own work.

Pretty much any artist can understand that anon. Do you think some artists are able to draw like professionals because they were born with it? Every person who takes art serious goes through the same struggle, admittedly some are more prepared to deal with the grind though.

I'm not agreeing with anon on the people who are posting studies and asking for advice, I'm agreeing with them on the people who post a 1 minute doodle or obviously low-beg drawing with no guideline for critique.
