Why You Should Copy Anime:

**Strive for quantity AND quality.**

Anime Studying:
>Copy anime references exactly and draw them from memory. Use illustrations, screenshots, anime figures, 3D models, etc.
>Don’t copy recklessly. Use construction, color theory, and other fundamental concepts to rehearse a drawing process that you can later easily manipulate for original artwork.
>Post all of your anime studies. Post even when you’re told not to. Create an art community that actually draws and improves together instead of just talking about it.
>Number your attempts and link to your previous posts.
>Critiquers should lead by example by posting their studies.

General Anime Style Discussion:
>Questions about achieving certain styles/techniques/compositions etc.
>Drawing methods, study habits, resources, tutorials, tools, software, etc
>Be specific and try to post a sample of your study attempts before asking for help.

**Draw copies from good anime styled references to mindfully up our mileage, internalize appealing aesthetics, and learn from each other’s processes and knowledge.**

You do need to know body proportions. And to think in 3D. But you only have to memorize major muscle, like thighs, biceps, pecs and traps, calves and gluteus maximus. Other than that, it's just boxes and cylinders.

Just don't apply human proportions to the face. Anime style has its own proportions.

>>6619387
Or yeah, do that. Much easier. I recommend it for comissions, because who cares?

-dress looks like it's hovering above (((her))) hips, somehow doesn't feel like cloth.

- a lack of surface details. Maybe instead of a totally plain dress, add some accents here and there. Some small bits of embroidery, or if you want the dress itself to remain plain, try to add a few more folds. That could also help it look more 3D, which it lacks.

-Arms and hands are awkward.
1)Bad hands and feet can ruin the overall impression. For one, the hands should be a bit bigger. Try checking how the size of your hands compares to your face and forearms, then look at Mahiro's hands.

2)The arm and hand besides (((her))) hips don't read well. the shoulder is going up for no reason and the hand pose makes no sense. Maybe try changing it to her pinching the hem of the dress between Mahiro's fingers as if (((she)))'s teasing us with a potentiall skirt flip.

3) The arm which has her hand going towards her chin is moving incorrectly. Try standing up with your arms hanging down, then reach for your chin. For the elbow to be as low as it is in this image, she would have to move her upper arm across her body, as if trying to touch the bottom end of the sternum with the elbow, but here the elbow is just kind of next to the body. Take a pic of yourself doing the pose and take note of how the arm moves.

-The torso looks as if you are passing off a 30 second gesture exercise as a sketch. Even when the naked body isn't visible, try to be aware of how it is shaped and how the parts are positioned. Also Mahiro should have a smaller butt.

-Another thing you might feel is off is the head to body ratio. Yours is close to 1:6, but 1:5 might work better since this is a lole

Not really, most of the ""critique"" was just a bunch of people giving advice that was extremely minor, not specific, or made the piece look worse. All I'm looking for are ways I can try and change my painting for the better. Whenever a guy would actually show me or explain properly then I always attempted to try change it. The problem that you seem to have is that you dont seem to understand that being selective of what criticism is valuable is not arrogance, its preference.

let me reword that, that line is the outline of the eyelid circling the eyeball, in your drawings you are outlining the eye as if they where a sticker, you need to stylize the eye based on the 3D shape of the eyeball, you are drawing that part in particular as a stright line when it should be curved towards the eye socket as is following the shape of the eyeball

yeah that's better also the that snout like face is fixed kek, not sure if this is intentional as this looks like a sketch, but from your previous drawings i nsome of them you are outlining the eyelashes almost together with the eyeball, don't forget the eyelashes have some mass, and depending of the angle they overlap the eyeball although this can go out of the window depending of the style. Just something worth pointing out, everything looks good enough mid beg even

my reasoning for the shape of the lashes is that theres a line where the skin stops and the eyeball starts (red line) and from there, the lashes will grow "out" (blue lines) and will fill out into the overall shape
I think yours look better though, whats the thinking behind them?

like i said this really depends more on the style than anything, in a technical level its more easy to read visually when you accentuate the shapes, size of the eyelashes and eyeball, but again they way you go about depends more on the style, your reasoning behind on how you do it is correct, but in some cases it may turn out a little off, for example the cropped left eye is really easy to tell the angle even without the rest of the face, the way the eye lashes was drawn and the nose bridge overlapping the eyeball makes easy to tell the angle, in the other hand the right eye is the opposite, really hard to tell the angle, so as you see in some cases exaggerating some of these details can improve the drawing( look at the A~B examples), but again this really depends on the style, look at the eyes circled at the bottom, they are in different styles but is easy to tell the angle.
and for the way i do it i just imagine a ball and draw around it, the shapes and form it's a different story but that's literally the base i follow.

The line going down the chin is throwing you off big time. You are supposed to trace the forms from the forehead, to the nose, mouth and chin. If you redraw everything flat on the front, your mouth is way off to the right lmao. I don't understand how you haven't looked at pinterest images of 3d anime faces yet. quick question from a dumbo here, how do you guys study like this? I'm still copying and I just wanna know what sort of mindset I have to get into to get into this "individual pieces" thing. For instance, I have trouble drawing the heads.

Should I just be studying "how to draw anime heads?" and how do I break that into something a person who can only copy can understand? What is the process to which you figure these things out. I get this is different for everyone, but I'm looking for something of a base perspective to work off of.

Most of this was spent just doodling, badly copying other peoples' art/reading books on art and trying to learn how to use my drawing pad and software. I got somewhat serious in the 2nd year and started learning fundies and spend maybe 2 hours a day after work and 8 hours spread across the weekend. Since I have no benchmark to compare myself to I have no idea if my progress is ok or not.

the eye shape and form is mostly a stylization choice but still follows the realistic basis at some degree,in your pic the left one is a stylistic choice the right one is more close to a realistic one, if you do decide to learn the stylization on the left just get tons of refs from different angles to re map a new form of the eye, when you study very stylized stuff the realistic counterpart doesnt help that much since the metrics are different , a lot is still based on the real stuff but you need to find what has been changed.

ie. in the left there is 2 eye balls of the same size but the pupil size is different, they look okay, but if you swap the eyelids from A to B you get C that looks completely off, as you can see in B the eye lids are bigger this change makes the the eye look okayish, this is the type of changes that you need to find when you are studying styles, in the right you can see how a single line can make a huge difference.

Did/is anyone going through Krenz's perspective course? I don't really get how he's getting these measurements like 0.3. Does he determine what is considered 1 then base everything off of that? Looks like he eyeballs most things.

How do you make anime pictures AI proof? I studied AI art and they seem to really struggle in complexer scenes, for instances expressions that are other than just normal "Look at camera with slight smile" and holding things like a detailed sword, also cigarettes and scenes with action like spilling fluid from a glass of water or coffee.

But normal portraits of anime girls sitting/standing are a thing for a past for any artist that doesn't want to be bothered by commets like "uuuh are you sure that isn't AI art?"

Also stuff like pic related obviously won't be replicable by AI for a really long time, if ever.

I don't know. A lot of the AI has a highly rendered plastic look to it.

Guys, what you think of the shading on this leg?

I'm torn between doing this or cell shading.

try drawing the entire cross section shape instead of just the front, it will help you understand the form
