/beg/ & /int/ - Beginner and Intermediate general

If you are a /beg/inner or /int/ermediate in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.
Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the drawthread with fundamental exercises.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS wide using one of the following methods:
1. screenshot the image and post that instead
2. change camera capture settings to something smaller
3. send to computer and resize in MSPaint

TRY TO BE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK.
When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help. When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

I'm working on the preliminary exercises before the 250 box challenge and I have a strange tendency that's been vexing me. Quite often when I draw a line I have a tendency to add a "hook" at the end.

I've been improving lately. Looking back on my older studies from like a year ago is inspiring. I do wish I was more dedicated rather than doing art, like, once every few days. Basically no matter the stance two people on /beg/ tell you the opposite thing and neither are typically entirely wrong. As a /beg/ my line confidence and accuracy is mediocre. Using a pen or not erasing is a useful piece of advice towards getting better at it. On the opposite side, my current focus is to improve my understanding of form and breaking down objects into forms. I think it helps me to fix mistakes and analyze where I went wrong. So both doing no erasing and going back and fixing my mistakes could be helpful in different ways.

I did a lot of studies of the manga artists I like, in the beginning I only made copies but later I managed to make some figures from imagination, after that it became easier to do random doodles in my free time
I also did studies from anatomy books

if you really want to know what I started to do that helped me a lot was the following
find 1-3 artists that you like and with a lot of work on the internet
download PureRef
save many images of figures by these artists from different angles and group them together, eg figures in profile, top view, front view, etc.
preferably for manga pages as they are not rendered and are just lines
now make your own figures, YOU WILL GET STUCK, check the reference and complete the figure do this for months and even years and you will need less and less of the references

pic rel is kinda old but that's what I used to do and most of it was my own stuff but some I had to check my references on PureRef because I got stuck and didn't know how to finish the figure.

Any general canvas size advice for digital art and webposting?
I tend to draw random custom sizes around 2000x2000 depending if the piece is more portrait or landscape, but certain uploads look very pixelated on thumbnails/zoomed out. I'm not sure if there's ideal canvas sizes to work on.

How do you into croquis/quicksketch? I feel so completely fucked while doing it. I'll put down a mark and instantly be able to tell it's fucked("that's not the angle I wanted, that's too long, that's too short, that's misplaced, that's not in proportion, that's too lifeless, that doesn't make sense," etc) but since you have to be quick I have no time to correct anything so the entire thing ends up completely fucked. I've tried Vilppu but I can't seem to get much out of him. Are there any guides or anything on how to do this shit?

Whatever amount of time you are using, double it at first - give yourself time to slow down and really look at the model. For extremely short drawings, don't try to capture every detail - start with a complete gesture and then add whatever you can. Quick sketch is a crushingly hard discipline - it's valuable but you should do it alongside your other practice because it will absolutely take years to get good.

"Good enough" is subjective. If all you're trying to show is "This is a person, and we understand that a person has depth" you're absolutely right - in the same way a symbol drawing is sufficient to show "this is a face, and we understand that a face has eyes". If you want to show "this form has this specific depth, and this specific relationship to the forms around it" that's different.

You become the type of person that does it every day. Try (and fail) to do it every day for 60 days or so straight, and make changes in your life until you can meet that goal. Drawing is a merciless discipline - a person who is going to succeed is one who accepts that it will be a tremendous component of their life going forward. It will not be picked up and put down, it won't wait for you while you're gaming, it doesn't care that you have a job. If you don't want it bad enough to sacrifice for it you're not going to get it, it's just too hard. My number 1 recommendation is to carry a sketchbook literally everywhere you go. You are never "waiting" at the doctors', the restaurant, the airport - you're drawing. You should be finishing sketchbooks, every page, and putting them on a bookshelf more than once per year in addition to your other practice.

Do you have a reference for these you could show us? Your terrain lacks depth. It just looks like blocks of scribbles. The cast shadows you draw will get smaller as the scene approaches the horizon line. A large change in depth means a larger change in cast shadow size. The cast shadow shapes should also change more dramatically based on the terrain. Otherwise it all looks like the same mush. You will end up using your own custom shapes, when you feel confidence in your knowledge/muscle memory, after the initial grinding phase. The problem will be when you try to put those shapes in perspective to build a composition, it will look wrong. Even if the figure you made looks awesome as a stand alone. It happens, you'll have to go back a little and adapt those shapes to the box system, and voilá suddenly the figure works and looks solid inside the composition.
You'll get there, the important thing is to know those tools are there when you need them. Just keep drawing.

1. Have a basic set of ideal proportions you understand on a rock solid level. 8 heads, crotch at the center, elbows meet the bottom of the ribs, wrists meet the crotch line, bottom of the knees halfway down the legs etc. Learn it, draw with it, know it like the back of your hand. The Loomis one is fine it's just a template.
2. Draw from photos, so when you exaggerate the pose you still have a rough idea of where everything is supposed to be. After a while you learn what you can push and pull in terms of proportions while still being convincing.
3. Understand that exaggerating the pose doesn't necessarily mean the proportions change, you're just pushing the existing proportions further than the model did.

draw a circle then use the liquify tool to compress it. On paper cut a piece of paper from the middle of the circle and move the 2 lines together to create an elipse, try it it's easy!

>> No.6621161

>>6621106
Complicated - but if you imagine the pelvis as an "underwear" shape it's easier. Some of the muscles connect all the way up at the waistband (TFL, glutes, sartorius), some just above the legholes (middle quad), some around the inner part of the legholes (adductors). Really being able to depict this connection well does mean you have to know some anatomy but for quick-and-dirty they attach at a diagonal angle about where the "legholes" of underwear are. Once you're comfortable with basic figure drawing you're going to want to spend a lot of time here because it critically affects your ability to draw attractive, non-weird figures, and the pelvis is extremely motile - it's tilt forwards and backwards tremendously effects the shape of the thighs and the belly.
