So I copied a cartoon character, in this case patrick. I used this technique

It works good with pointy characters that don't have a lot of curves and crevices, at the beginning I tried this technique with Stitch, and I ragequit, even though it's also a very simple character, but it has no defined straight lines like Patrick does. Should I just copy simpler characters for now, or should I try copying more complex ones to get better quicker?

As a general rule if you use an inked drawing as a base for a painting you'll want to use a more cartoony style with harder shadows. Gradients and soft shadows look like shit combined with inked drawings. Unless you are way above the level of this thread and know exactly what you are doing.

I mean yeah, but I get the same shit with heads despite drawing them in the past (in finished artworks at that, if we ignore the general quality). I had a hiatus and wanted to warm up by copying a head from random picture I had saved and out of like six attempts, one looked similar enough and another one wasn't horrible despite lack of accuracy. I often catch myself drawing the top/back of the head too small.

Most recently I watched an ethan becker video about this weird shape and how you can use it to define different things especially if you can learn to turn it and stuff.
Mostly it's a combination of things though, loomis with general facial proportion guidelines. I don't really have conscious focus on style mostly because I'm floundering to get things to work most of the time.

you left too many guidelines imaginary, when you were placing the door I think you referenced the seats without taking into account where the walls and floor really are
it helps to start by setting up the room as if you were looking at the inside of a box, then block out objects in the scene as cubes before going to detail
but for a first time it's good

if you want to populate it, imagine what's happening in the scene, who's taking the subway?

Thank you for your insights. I somewhat tried to correct it, I'd say it makes more sense now. Hi, I use CS4 but I don't know why my digital drawings always feel dull and ugly compared to traditional media (paper, pencil). Personally I would think that drawing in digital media would be an enhancer to my drawings but I think it's the opposite.

I have adhd and this is an excuse. If I really am into something I can concentrate on it, anyone can. You want instant gratification, get that shit mindset out of your head, learning to draw takes many hours of dedicated studying and intense concenetration on the workings of nature. You'll never get a "click" moment when you just draw from imagination. There is a reason why medival art looks 2d and shitty, because they didn't have good teachers, they all went extinct after the roman empire fell. They drew from imagination, see where that led them to.

Try meditating, force yourself to meditate. Every day 10 minutes. This teaches you to be more attentive and concentrate on a single thing/breath/image/point on the floor etc. If you can't push yourself to get better you don't want to get better, you just want quick results. Simple as.

I actually stopped doing head construction a while back. I just draw the anime face first, then sort of build the head around it? if you understand form and kinda isometric perspective you can build an entire figure around the face, though it wont be dynamic at all. You're pretty much left with just standing poses.

There really are no rules, just tools. I rarely if ever go fully digital sketch to finished piece. I almost always either scan in my drawing or just take a quick webcam picture.

I need something linking me back to traditional drawing, thats where all my intuition lies, but you musn't let the high level entry of digital scare you away. I have both a cintiq and ipad and bar none, digital is all the trad tools you'll ever need.

use thicker outlines for the big hair shapes and thinner for the details.
Vary and simplify your floof shapes a bit and it'll look more appealing,
The face contour on the far side gets thinner because of the eye socket, and it points towards the eye kinda.
Eyelids should be pretty static on the angle
Mouth should be about as wide as the tongue if it's coming out that far

How do learn scale and size?

There's some hits and misses on the details here, I'll admit. I was told I should use a reference for the hands by someone when I posted it partly done previously.
I showed it to a couple of women in person and they specifically said I did a good job with the hands.
(The funniest comment was when I sent it and the source photo to my mom and sisters, my mom said "it's like an a.i., but a human.")

Well then find someone whose artwork you like, Bridgeman’s style isn’t for everybody. As for the elongated legs, those look about the right length to me, being half of the body. It’s probably a bit exaggerated to emphasize leg length, as it’s very easy to make them too short. To be quite honest, if anyone’s leg drawing looks elongated, it’s yours .

This is something I recommend you get past. There are way too many drawings in that book to be “fixing” any of them. You’ll make mistakes like the elongated legs and that’s okay, just move on to the next figure. You did pretty good otherwise imo. Also…If I were you, I’d stop drawing in pencil and draw in pen. One thing I can suggest is that you get the perspective of the overall pose down. So think on big cube for the head and one for the torso rotated and placed in perspective you want. That way you can add on smaller forms and have them fall in place properly. Doing well anon keep it up!

If you draw how it looks from the side then you’ll have a better understanding of what’s in front of what and how the body is oriented. Take the arm that’s on her shoulder for example. I just did the post and the bicep should be showing from the front on the outside of the forearm touching her shoulder. If you drew it from the side you’d also see that in such a pose, the rib/chest is pushed outwards more for support, while In yours it looks flat.

What's a good rythm for learning figure?

I start off looking at what I did yesterday, what looks good/bad and why, then I do ten 30 second gestures and five 2 minute gestures as a warm up before I start reading/watching videos/following examples (mixture of proko, Brett Huston and whatever useful materials I find) and then I finish off with some timed life drawing (croquis cafe) to try to apply what I've learnt which goes for 20 minutes.

Depends solely on which teacher you are following. By eviston gesture can be two minutes or even 20 minutes long. By nicolaides anything above 1 minute and you arent doing gesture anymore but rather study of figure and such. there is whole fucking art philosophy hidden in gesture topic and every teacher has different explanation and working method for it.

pick your own tutor and simply follow their instructions.

I dont have any strong opinion about gesture. Majority of beg books didnt even mentioned it exist or treated it as

And so far i havent really incorporated it into my workflow (which is to be expected since so far i rely heavily on references). But once i get to the INT books and start to rely less and less on references i expect gestures to become somewhat relevant.

the only thing i can say for certain is that the time i spent grinding gestures (the less than 1 minute, super scribble type) wasnt wasted. Even back then when i couldnt really tell myself the other people were saying my gestures are getting "better". and honestly now that i look at my old stuff i can confirm there are visible changes despite me never consciously doing them differently.

The only anons i would recommend short timed gesture grind are the ones who
