If you are a /beg/inner or /int/ermediate in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.
Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the drawthread with fundamental exercises.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS wide using one of the following methods:
1. screenshot the image and post that instead
2. change camera capture settings to something smaller
3. send to computer and resize in MSPaint

New collaborative sticky (anyone can edit): https://hackmd.io/UMnZVhNITW-T2wZpHw6d0Q
Old: http://www.squidoo.com/how-to-draw-learn

Read the sticky

When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help. When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

So I copied a cartoon character, in this case patrick. I used this technique

It works good with pointy characters that don't have a lot of curves and crevices, at the beginning I tried this technique with Stitch, and I ragequit, even though it's also a very simple character, but it has no defined straight lines like Patrick does. Should I just copy simpler characters for now, or should I try copying more complex ones to get better quicker?

Most recently I watched an ethan becker video about this weird shape and how you can use it to define different things especially if you can learn to turn it and stuff.
Mostly it's a combination of things though, loomis with general facial proportion guidelines. I don't really have conscious focus on style mostly because I'm floundering to get things to work most of the time.

you were asking for objects and shading tips, but I'm going after your perspective first
you left too many guidelines imaginary, when you were placing the door I think you referenced the seats without taking into account where the walls and floor really are

I have adhd and this is an excuse. If I really am into something I can concentrate on it, anyone can. You want instant gratification, get that shit mindset out of your head, learning to draw takes many hours of dedicated studying and intense concenetration on the workings of nature. You'll never get a "click" moment when you just draw from imagination. There is a reason why medival art looks 2d and shitty, because they didn't have good teachers, they all went extinct after the roman empire fell. They drew from imagination, see where that led them to.

Try meditating, force yourself to meditate. Every day 10 minutes. This teaches you to be more attentive and concentrate on a single thing/breath/image/point on the floor etc. If you can't push yourself to get better you don't want to get better, you just want quick results. Simple as.

I actually stopped doing head construction a while back. I just draw the anime face first, then sort of build the head around it? if you understand form and kinda isometric perspective you can build an entire figure around the face, though it wont be dynamic at all. You're pretty much left with just standing poses.

Just based on your linework alone, i would suggest messing with the stabilizer option. Digital doesn't feel soulful at all at first, theres no skritch of the lead etc no sound (Ive always said they should artificially add it to pen tablets lol)
no texture of the paper

There really are no rules, just tools. I rarely if ever go fully digital sketch to finished piece. I almost always either scan in my drawing or just take a quick webcam picture.

I need something linking me back to traditional drawing, thats where all my intuition lies, but you musn't let the high level entry of digital scare you away. I have both a cintiq and ipad and bar none, digital is all the trad tools you'll ever need.

use thicker outlines for the big hair shapes and thinner for the details.
Vary and simplify your floof shapes a bit and it'll look more appealing,
The face contour on the far side gets thinner because of the eye socket, and it points towards the eye kinda.

Well then find someone whose artwork you like, Bridgeman’s style isn’t for everybody. As for the elongated legs, those look about the right length to me, being half of the body. Here is a friends kobold rogue I am trying to draw. Trying to get better at the fundamentals. Can anyone give me some general advice or pointers to improve?

>> No.6611087

How the fuck do I stop letting myself get discouraged? I'm definitely improving of course progress is slow going. Lately I've been pretty much just practicing and studying, whenever I try drawing for fun I end up getting frustrated cause it's not good enough for me, so I go back to practicing more but doing that alone is boring. Then I give up for a few days, and go right back to the cycle.
I think I got too focused on getting good at the expense of just having fun with art. I don't know how to have fun with it anymore, what do?

>> No.6611089

Any good vids on drawing the head? I think I'm slowly going insane because I cannot get it right, at most I can do some shitty 3/4 view thing after many erasing and fixes. It's like I cannot memorize how the damn thing looks.

>> No.6611095

Well Anon firstly I’d prioritize having some fun first. Maybe draw some concept art, random imagination sketches, etc. Draw something that gives you the freedom to make mistakes and enjoy yourself. I think draw a box said 50% for fun and 50% practice.

Still, make sure to practice. Try practicing in fun ways, and maybe practice as a warmup to drawing for fun. Still just know this art shit is gonna take a while, progress will be slow, and you will still need a lot of practice independent of how much you draw for fun, so take that as you will

>> No.6611112

One thing I can suggest is that you get the perspective of the overall pose down. So think on big cube for the head and one for the torso rotated and placed in perspective you want. That way you can add on smaller forms and have them fall in place properly. Doing well anon keep it up!

Something kinda like this. But her arms are squeezed to her sides and her shoulders and raised. and the camera is closer to her hands looking up with her head back. Kinda like when people put flashlights under the chins. I dk understand why I would have to draw the pose from the side though? Would that help a lot with the foreshortening of the jaw and hands?

>> No.6611175

If you draw how it looks from the side then you’ll have a better understanding of what’s in front of what and how the body is oriented. Take the arm that’s on her shoulder for example. I just did the post and the bicep should be showing from the front on the outside of the forearm touching her shoulder. If you drew it from the side you’d also see that in such a pose, the rib/chest is pushed outwards more for support, while In yours it looks flat.

I start off looking at what I did yesterday, what looks good/bad and why, then I do ten 30 second gestures and five 2 minute gestures as a warm up before I start reading/watching videos/following examples (mixture of proko, Brett Huston and whatever useful materials I find) and then I finish off with some timed life drawing (croquis cafe) to try to apply what I've learnt which goes for 20 minutes.

well if you are beg beg then everything takes so much time its unreal. and then you look at pros who draw the figure in 10 seconds and make it look so easy you want to rage quit
i would prefer way more bigger curves on both on them. i wont go and say that people with no ass dont exists but... yeah
you have to draw more and think less
is this from 3d printer or are you sculptor chad?

pain means your ergonomics are fucked up. fix it or your spine and or wrist will explode. there is also chance its just muscle and then you simply need to stretch
dont give up anon, push through!
try drawing gestures without lifting stylus from tablet so that they are maximum flow and zero stiff puppets
in digital scale is kinda irrelevant. Just make sure you are drawing in resolution BIGGER than what you will need. downscaling never loses quality
what book?
the anon probably wanted you to clean up the sketch so its nice and only the lines which are good are clearly visible
its the gesture school approach: time limit forces you to not erase, simplify and focus on the gesture only which is according to gesture raisers the most important fundie.

Depends solely on which teacher you are following. By eviston gesture can be two minutes or even 20 minutes long. By nicolaides anything above 1 minute and you arent doing gesture anymore but rather study of figure and such. there is whole fucking art philosophy hidden in gesture topic and every teacher has different explanation and working method for it.

pick your own tutor and simply follow their instructions.

pic related, the three blue are all gestures by eviston opinion. Middle one was i think 15 seconds? and left was i think 10 mintues.

I dont have any strong opinion about gesture. Majority of beg books didnt even mentioned it exist or treated it as
>oh yeah, that thing exists
and then the other two beg books treated it as the only thing which matters. And so far i havent really incorporated it into my workflow (which is to be expected since so far i rely heavily on references). But once i get to the INT books and start to rely less and less on references i expect gestures to become somewhat relevant.

the only thing i can say for certain is that the time i spent grinding gestures (the less than 1 minute, super scribble type) wasnt wasted. Even back then when i couldnt really tell myself the other people were saying my gestures are getting "better". and honestly now that i look at my old stuff i can confirm there are visible changes despite me never consciously doing them differently.

The only anons i would recommend short timed gesture grind are the ones who
>have too stiff / robotic figures
>are accused of tracing / using 3D models despite not tracing / using 3d models
>have no line confidence
>complain about being too slow in general with drawing
since gestures imho really help with these

you gotta trust into the book / mentor. if you dont trust their methods then why are you following them in the first place? I have yet to open vilpu or loomis books, i have perspective to finish first. Nicolaides said in order to comprehend gesture you first must to draw thousand of them, then he makes you RE-READ the first two chapters and then he says: back to gesture grind lmao. I can sort of offer sameish advice: less thinking, less worrying, more drawing and more experimenting.
