How often do you reference real people's faces to design stylized characters?

>> No.6591348

Never. That I kinda consider more of an issue than a strength because it limit my mental visual gallery a lot, so is not something I recommend. At same time I really don't have as much fun using reference as I do just trying to make things work from memory and that kinda all my motivation as to why I go this route.

Everyone who claims they never do it are just lying about their Pinterest boards. Only Kim Jung Gi managed to cram all his reference in his bald head. Katsuya Terada and Karl Kopinski are still working their way to Gi's level.

Hard to find an example with multiple characters were the issue I'm talking about is more prominent, but I noticed that I always end up doing the same style of nose and all my characters kinda look asian.

This was done with a similar method to OP. Sketch from reference, and sketch again without reference, you can tell how the forms are much more confident.

The reference I use was this punisher cover of him holding a katana if interests someone, I was trying to redline it.
