He stopped giving a shit at some point. I always get a little frustrated thinking about DBZ - Every character who isn't a sayain becoming useless, constanly replacing characters (yamcha was the rival, then tien, then piccolo, then finally the sayain vegeta), making previous character arcs pointless (remember all the drama Yamcha and Bulma went through in dragon ball? Made pointless by some off-screen break up and new relation... with a sayain).

He obviously wanted it to end, but became a victim of success.
