6551055 No.6551055 [Reply] [Original]

Last time I tried to learn to draw, I was 19 back in 2020, I felt I was already too old to become good, tried many courses and resources and did daily grinding and practice, never got better, everyone here on /ic/ was better than me, it crushed me.

6 months turned into a year and 3 months and I have nothing to show for it, why? I was insulted and called talentless, I fully agree.

Should I even start again? I want to do it but I'm 22 now, if I was past expiration date to start and be good at 19, I'm way over the hill.

Why did I fail? I should have been better at 6 months. Why? Am I really hopeless?

No it doesn't mean your brain doesn't understand it can be that you pairing of your hand not good, this is just hand-eye coordination. Handiwork and detailing low iq not brain thing, you can only improve by mechanical drawing doesn't require concept or understanding so this actually take physical practice. Like you I understand how lighting or values work either so I cannot do from imagination, but I can copy a sphere from still life closely because I develop my hand-eye-coordination, but does that mean I understand? No, I don't I just learn to develop my handiwork. This sort of thing literally monkey thing you just get better with motor skill.

Shading is test of handiwork and detail, it only a test of your understanding of value if you doing from imagination but if you are copying from reference it's all motor skill because you have the cheat sheet already make lighting for you so you just need your hand learn to copy physically.

>Be honest with me, if I continue, if I go back, Im going to be some of those that draw and draw and never improve? Drawing for decades and still at the same level?

Because people draw for its own sake. It's fun. Hokusai was enjoying what he was doing so much he was looking forward to painting well past his 90s. I've been drawing for 20 years and I'm low-int at best; I don't really give a shit if it takes me another 20 to improve. If that sounds too daunting, go pick up something else. from what I have seen you draw, you practice a variety of techniques, some are quite ambitious with full shading and construction. What if you focused on a single aspect to improve, ignore everything else for a while? Once you see measurable progress with that one specific area, you may gain confidence knowing improvement is possible.
For example, just drawing eyes everyday for 3-4 weeks.

That's the funniest part. Hokusai never thought he was any good either until he was almost 80. No matter how good you get as an artist this is a common sentiment. If your only goal is to "get good" you might be waiting until you are eighty and even then still not think you are good.

Your goals are too broad. Think of something feasible over the short term, such as, "I want to learn to draw heads." Then break that down into smaller steps as well. Also, 22 is not remotely old. Why is this board full of people who think they're ready for the nursing home the minute they qualify for a driver's license? I've seen people learn to draw well starting out in their 60s. You're young, and have plenty of time. Probably following bad advice, but that can be corrected.

You're so caught up with self pity you can't learn. Art is a craft just like any other. When you were a babe you learned how to walk through some hardship. Now your next hardship is the disciplines that make up good art. So grab a pencil and start somewhere simple.

>why? I was insulted and called talentless
you really don't have what it takes. I know people like you. You'll NEVER make it.

if you don't enjoy the process you'll never get good. I suggest taking up another hobby you can enjoy without comparing yourself to an impossible standard. While doing that maybe somewhere along the line you'll re-examine your insecurities about art.

You've been at it for like 3 years inconsistently at most, that's like nothing, it takes at least 5 years for most people to get half decent and the few ones that improve that much in the span of 1 or 2 years draw like 10-12 hours a day

It takes most people 5-10 years to get to pro level, most artists make their entry into the scene in their twenties and they're still not fully mature, talented teens are the exception and plenty of artists also get good when they're older

If you want to do it then do it, you can always keep it as a hobby and I know it gets frustrating when you're not as good as you want but you'll never be fully satisfied even as your art gets better

If you're just gonna regret not trying later it's better to go down and study, when you're down you gotta try and understand where your flaws are and how to do better, tutorials are good and all but you gotta figure stuff out for yourself
