Composition is one of the most important fundies when it comes to creating appeal but is often ignored. Why is that?

Because you kinda learn it by feeling, you can totally learn it and get better at it, but you can just feel when an illustration has shitty composition.
And with digital art, more than before you can edit your drawings.
Also, usually AI sucks at composition since it's hard to filter by math.
Unless you specifically indicate the composition you want.

Guess its just me then, I couldn't "feel" a good or bad composition til I did a bunch of master studies. While my figures and rendering improved my composition lacked greatly behind til I deliberately studied it but everyone's different.

What do you mean it's often ignored? Most art instructional books talk about it at length. There is an entire chapter dedicated to it on Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain. I would also highly recommend looking at design books too as they have a heavy focus on composition as well.

If you wonder why it doesn't come up in critique here it's because character against white background is most of what is is posted which leaves little room for interesting or unique composition. Also typically with /beg/ level work there are a lot more pressing matters than the composition.

I suppose you are correct about that but even then low level coom requires a decent composition to be engaging atleast and would definitely up some of these guys' level. Any design books you would recccomend?

its too esoteric for the self taught.
Your not going to know what rhythm or harmony or eye movment is unless someone tells you that you don't have it.

if this is something you need taught to you, you are quite literally dumber than a monkey, or more likely, a mindless, unthinking drone that exists to carry out instructions

I found “ Picture This: How Pictures Work” really good for understanding composition personally. Although “Mastering Composition by Ian Roberts” is also fantastic.
