If you are a /beg/inner or /int/ermediate in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.
Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the drawthread with fundamental exercises.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS wide using one of the following methods:
1. screenshot the image and post that instead
2. change camera capture settings to something smaller
3. send to computer and resize in MSPaint

READ THE STICKY:

TRY TO BE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK.
When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help. When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

Loving Krenz. I haven't found anyone that has more detailed, idiot-proof step-by-step instructions

What is the recommended order for doing the Krenz courses - perspective rhythm color?

And the krenz notion site (https://asgg.notion.site/Krenz-238090f8a5934eb883fc644bef1d1214)) has a "SAM" course. What's that? What does SAM stand for? Where would it fit into the order?

I haven't seen the Krenz video, but the idea is right. There are various levels of usefulness to "copying" something - you could trace it, grid it out, sight size it, or use comparative measurements, some of them are going to teach you more than others. depends
imo if youre just starting out try to make an accurate copy, since your improvement will come from "seeing" and recreating accurately. you don't necessarily need to study someone else's art, you can just draw jars or flowers or hands etc from real life.
later on when you study other artists or photos to learn color etc. you have to think more about what you want to learn from the experience
(especially with photos which often neuter the dynamic range + more subtle notes of the actual scene)

I would recommend doing different types of figure studies as well though. I found forcing myself to do different timed intervals of figure drawing helped to strengthen different aspects. For example 30 second figure drawings really helped me to gain line confidence while 30 minute figure drawings really helped me to get better at rendering figures.

compared to the right you squashed the value range a bit, notice how it has darker darks and lighter lights. The original doesn't really have hard edges, but I'd also caution you to watch for which edges need to be soft and how soft they are.
going more into personal opinion territory, imo you should try to watch values and shapes more closely than trying to blend. you can have a great image with only hard edges, but not without good values/shapes.

Btw is that all from reference? I think the rendering looks good but it would help to include reference for comparison.

It looks like you are trying to draw a 2 point perspective, some of the lines on the buildings are off a little. none of the building boxes are aligned to the grid made by the VP you've drawn in the middle, so I'm not sure how helpful adding that was. I think it helps to draw the rear occluded faces of all the blocks to get a better feel of if the perspective is right.

There are a couple things that are just messy such as the moon. It should at least TRY to represent a full circle instead of being lopsided.

When shown the reference I would also make it clear that the constellations "connect" and also look like constellations, The one at the top is just a single star and makes the idea confusing. The one through the fairies wing also is also failing on the design here. It should probably extend behind her so we see the end of the constellation. This would help the visual clarity for both the constellation and the wings of the fairy. .

who's paying for the class? that should factor in, unless someone else is paying and you (or they) don't care about their money. if you're in college, you should always calculate what every class hour costs you. what does that one class cost you for a semester, and how many hours of in-class lecture and mentoring are there? divide cost by hours. you should do this with every class you take, so you know what it's costing you when you skip class kek. how available your prof is outside of class time is also a factor.

if it really seems like they're just doing exactly what you would do on your own (not unlikely), then what are you paying for? the structure, the lecture, the college credit, the materials (if they're provided), the prof's time, the time around other paying students. is it worth it to you?

also, is it required to take higher level classes that may be more worthy of your time and money? it may be worth eating the cost now if it'll get you to a better value proposition you're interested in down the road.

Most teachers show you what a good result looks like and maybe show you the way to create a single piece. Krenz gives you strategies on how to study, philsophies on staying motivated long term, very detailed step-by-step processes. He often gives list of "A is easiest, B is medium difficulty, C is hard, don't do B until you've practiced A" which I've never seen another teacher do, but it's so important because that allows you to choose work with appropriate challenge for your skill, so you don't get bored and don't get overwhelmed/fail more often than necessary.

Those aren't chicken scratches tho.
I'm learning from Michael Hampton's Analytical Figure Drawing, he explains is not only okay to do that, but those are explicitly to NOT do contour, rather find the volume in the figure.
Not really chicken scratches, but 15 confident lines to compare one to each other.

No such thing as talent. You definitely don't practice very much nor very hard given your extremely slow progression. Closest thing to talent is IQ, and even that can be increased.

I guess it's easier to just cry that you have no natural born skills which those mythical "talented people" were born with instead of actually putting in the work.

If you're honest with yourself: how much do you actually practice mindfully?

I am like other anon draw entire life since baby and I still beg even though I do life drawing, mastercopy, and still life for almost 6 years, I realize cause I never actually understand what I copy so I only improve my handiwork. This can be low iq retard (talent is how fast you understand concept), but even retard will learn eventually but slowly. Only thing people like us can do is learn at our own pace, it's irrational compare ourselves to genius who start learning in adulthood and already become pro in few years. If you love drawing enough you will be able to continue and improve if you understand concept but maybe still more retarded than others who learn fast. I think also having guidance is good so you don't get tunnel vision and ingrain bad habits, I have it all the time when drawing from imagination why I cannot do it and only improve motor skills, only can copy and never properly understand fundies. I don' know why you keep coming back, you come back so often clearly you want to draw.

You can improve you just have to accept you might not get it as fast as your peers or maybe you never reach pinnacle of the level you want, but you will improve nevertheless. You have okay talent, but if you only want to get fast good then really drawing not for you cause everyone mileage different. Also just because you not improve fast enough doesn't mean you don't understand. There is understanding and then there is motor skill. Motor skill take time and is low iq physical skill related to copying, understanding is more similar to talent learning faster and is relate to iq and imagination drawing.

what about it do you want to imitate? it looks like stylized shadow shapes, with some midtones here and there from (intentionally) messy hatching. look up chiaroscuro, notan and posterization to find some stuff you might find interesting.

if you practice traditional figure drawing, learning how to divide the light and dark sides by drawing the shadow shapes by drawing the terminator is something you will learn early on but instantly improves your work if you didn't know about it already. you can achieve effects like that with photoshop posterization in black and white, and by using filters (picrel, 4ish values), which seperate the image into value zones for you. don't use it as a crutch but it can be a useful tool for training.

But when I see the qualiry if my fucking year, I KNOW I'll never ever do it, I'm 22 in learning terms I am ancient, Im not even talented so guess what, means I am even more hopeless , fuck. Please have empathy.
At the current progress I'll be 40 when I draw like pic related, I unironically play russian roulette and would be better off with 6 full if that's the case.

Of what use is to be a mediocre artist at 40? It's like inspiring and pushing a small no name no silverware team like say, FUCKING japan or Estonia, telling them that they will WIN the World Cup, surely the big teams do it all the time.

A literal century would paas and those two simply don't have the talent, they will never win it.

I don't get the 8 months schizo, they sure put a lot of effort into whining. There are better ways to cope because how you're acting right now is retarded, you're like a kid throwing a tantrum in hopes that you will get what you want, but you won't. You have to swallow your ego and pride, have faith, and do the work. You complain a lot about talent and how you lack it and cannot do art, yet you still are here and complain when people tell you to stop. That's the logical conclusion of your thought process: you quit. The best way to change this is to do some simple exercises beneficial to you when you're angry drawing. You also need to develop a proper inner critic rather than relying on others so hard. Make sure you are familiar with the various fundamentals of art and don't laser focus on one without knowing a. It about the others otherwise you might struggle to have some things make sense in context. When have you ever last drawn?

The problem isn't whether you're right or wrong about talent, it's that you continue to whine about something that so out of your control rather than how you can better adjust your technique despite whatever it is you believe. You are whining about something that if true is not going to change.
Do you have a sense of direction? Not necessarily the art you want to make though that is part of it. I've felt like you and when I've really thought about it I realized maybe I don't fully get where I'm going to achieve my goal.
One thing to do is to analyze the styles you like and focus on the fundamentals prominent in them.
Most importantly understand the purpose behind everything you do. You will improve much faster if you are mindful. Quality over quantity. Lastly please destroy your annoying inner critical voice, no one wants to hear it and if there's any force stopping you from getting good, it's that one.

i know jack shit about cartoons or character design, but my CEO beg eye sees that you have severe case of same_face across all of these. I understand that you can differentiate characters just by different color and hairstyle but IMHO that is very lazy thing to do only the most brain dead uninspired anime shows do.

For example look at the shape of the nose. Its copy pasted. Same for length of snout. Or cheek bones. Or distance or shape of eyes. If i were to design cow furry, first thing i would do is study how actual cows look like and how they differ from each other.

Alternatively embrace the cartoon. Look at simpsons. They are omega simple yet there are DRASTIC differences between characters done by simply completely different shapes for eyes, mouth and nose.

>>6551904
for now i am simply following whatever the books tell me to draw. And its very varied. Even the nicolaides book where you have to grind 100 gestures per 3 hour schedule was making me do wild shit from blind contour to studying anatomy by drawing bones from anatomy atlas into my figures or drawing detailed head in water colors.

Just draw (varied stuff, not "just" gestures)
