This thread is dedicated to master studies, where you copy artwork you admire as a form of study. They are the quickest way to improve and learn about any fundamental you are having problems with. If you need to work on your hands, copy hands from other artists, and if you're having trouble with rendering, make careful studies of paintings with lighting you admire. Studies can be quick or long. You can even copy anatomy books like Bridgman, Morpho, and Hogarth. The type of studies you want to do depend on your personal goals and the types of problems you are grappling with. The point is to study what you are interested in!!

Artists of all levels are welcome. Critiques and redlines are encouraged.

Yup, just keep copying. It's like archery, you have to keep aiming, aiming, and aiming. For rendering, I would start with paintings that have more simple renderings of matte objects, not necessarily a fruit jar like that artist did. From there, you can build up your library of lighting effects. Why not buy an anatomical skull from amazon and paint that? It'll help with portraiture, anatomy, and everything

Did you go through the whole Finch guide? You're supposed to start with basic forms, then memorize the muscle with another anatomy book. Only then, do you copy Bridgman. And yeah, there will be scribbly lines, you'll just have to learn to see where he's scribbling, and where the forms of the muscles are. You'll be able to tell that better if you know the anatomical information beforehand..

Trying something new for the past couple days. Now, I'm just doing 1-2 direct copies, and then drawing various views of the character from imagination. I'm keeping the reference up as I draw from imagination. I find that this method is actually way better than the memory drawing practice, because I'm not memorizing extraneous stuff like 'exactly how many strands of hair are crossing her left eye' or stuff like that. Instead, I'm treating the character like an animator would, as a model sheet from which to create. Doing the imagination work makes me ask questions, and helps me recall and solidify the information in my head, and any time I have questions about how to draw a certain part of the character, I'll just look back at the reference and lightbulbs will come on.

For both of these, the top left drawing was the copy, and the rest were from imagination. This method is also way more fun than the memory drawing, so even if its less "brutal and effective" I think I'm going to stick to this.

Kim Jung Gi talked about a similar exercise, where you draw something from reference, then you draw it from various angles from your imagination. If the Goat likes this exercise, I think it's good for me too. Can't believe it took me this long to realize how easy and effective this was

hampton and bridgman go hand in hand pretty well,
hampton teaches you an approach to drawing with fundamental form and structure explained and simplified and bridgman gives you hundreds of pages of things to practice
(although iirc not too closely? i believe proko or moderndayjames explains in a video that bridgman's drawings were originally on a board for students, not intended for copying, so don't worry about every single line)
anatomy for sculptors is also pretty good
finally, and obviously, figure drawing from life (or video/photo as a best alternative) is also indispensable

Feeling a bit silly, because I'm going back to the memory drawing method. I figured I can just "apply" my studies when I'm making comics. Plus, memory drawings are such a great exercise, I can't give it up. I'm trying a process called "3 + 3", where I do 3 studies, then do each one from memory, in order. This way, I can separate out the memory drawing from the study, and make it slightly more difficult for myself. I'll also have a quota I have to hit every day. I've done it for the past 2 days, and I saw amazing retention. My comic work quality jumped up tremendously, and all the shapes are sticking in my head.

>which is to say maybe you're only a step removed from doing an old master study?
I really really want to start copying old-timey children's book illustrations. Also, at the beginning of Ponyo, there is a series of illustrations of the sea, with beautiful hatch work. Those images mesmerized me as a kid, and I've been wanting my whole life to copy those. If there are more artists you know of who are good with a "dreamy hatching" style, that would be greatly appreciated

>(it is a little odd you chose to leave our her hatching though)
It's taken me 9 months to be able to bring down my study time from 30+ minutes to only 6-7 minutes per drawing. aka, I'm a slow learner, and I'm slowly understanding her work more and more. The hatching is the thing that attracted me to her work, so I definitely hope to be good enough to understand that soon.

It was difficult for me to differentiate the various figures, due to all the details. It’s impressive how durer managed to pack so much detail into the original wood engraving but still avoid looking like a pollok painting in terms of value and composition.

When Vilppu and Bridgman do these illustrations with shorthand hatches/tone how intentional are they? I read >>6589915 and I'm trying to copy the scratches less and try to understand more but I'm confused, where's the light source even coming from in this one? The shading on the muscle mass above the thumb tells me in front but It's also everywhere.

It seems to me like it’s coming from the front as well, but when copying bridgeman don’t get too caught up in stuff like this. The main goal is to understand how to draw bones/muscles so if you gain something in that regard you’re fine. He has a lot of lines and things you may not understand but just know when you see it and move on accordingly.

Pic rel. is my attempt at the hand as I’m copying bridgeman as well. Make sure to draw everything you see. As for your drawing, it looks rushed and unfinished. If you’re going to copy it, copy it thoroughly. Hatch the thumb nail, add some knuckles, add some overlaps, etc. Analyze what bridgeman is doing way more than you currently are.

Nice forms. you're right, I've been getting lazy with my copies. I just remembered that Vilppu uses tone to show which planes are receding away which is why the light is in the front. I will do better bridgman senpai.

I block in basic forms / shapes, then lighten it with a kneaded eraser and draw over it, adding more detail. I pay attention to vertical and horizontal alignments, and I want it to be as accurate as possible, while also being able to feel the form. But at the end of the day, you want to be able to eyeball it and still get it accurate. Think of it as rifle practice, trying to hit bullseye

Man. Here's another one I did while unfocused and I got told
>Try not to be a perfectionist with bridgeman there are way too many drawings for that
That said wait what exactly am I supposed to be measuring? I don't really measure other than to make sure the leg length is close to or a bit longer than upper body length.

>> No.6616969

>>6616943
Lol I’m the Anon that gave you the advice about perfectionism.

What I mean is, similar to what the other Anon said, take your time doing your drawings. Measure them and try to make them as accurate as possible and add as many details until it looks like bridgmans drawing. What I recommend against, however, is erasing one body part over and over to make it look like bridgmans, erasing an entire drawing to make it more accurate, planning and then erasing the plan because it may be imperfect..that sort of thing. My point still remains that there are a lot of drawings to copy so don’t stress over one, just make them as accurate as you can. Hopefully you can find a balance between the two

Its less shasing moreso AO.

Whatever is turned away from the viewer is going to have slight shading on it, because whatever is facing the viewer reflects light directly into their eyes, whereas the other parts direct less. This is something that happens irl once you notice it.

Well laddies I tried posting on /beg/ but I got 0 feedback.
I'm struggling with blending pastels, not sure what value should I insert fist since I've mostly worked with colour pencils and there you insert the darkest value but now I find myself blocking the image with that method.
Should I start with the mid-tones or the lightest value and start blending from there?

I realized I can't shade at all so I tried doing a master study. It took a lot longer than I thought, and I only used two or three brushes. How many do you use on average for shading? I feel like I just crosshatch until the colors blend, that can't be the most optimal way to do colors, right?

Memory drawing. I’m happy with this one, because I didn’t have to stare at the reference and memorize it. I just let it come to me

At an atelier with a teacher. The paper is Cavallo 109, using pencils HB through 6H.

I'm close to finishing my first copy of Bridgman. I've improved a lot and I know the forms of the body but I'm still hazy on some things, mostly origins and insertions. Should I study someone else before my second copy, like Hampton or Hogarth or Stanley Prokopenko or something or will it all come together the second time around?

Very cool. That's quite a task you set for yourself anon

>> No.6646236

>>6645468
I haven’t gotten to the second run yet and I struggle with origins and insertions as well but that will probably get easier when you try drawing it from imagination because you won’t have a choice but say to yourself “this muscle attaches to this bone” or you won’t be able to draw it at all. Copying another artist isn’t really going to do much imo because this boils down to you not knowing the anatomy well enough and you’ll become more familiar a second run. Plus copying multiple artists at once is a no go imo. That definitely won’t make you any less confused

Just stick with bridgeman and see where it takes you. I’m sure the insertions and origins will become second nature the more you draw from imagination

maybe it'll be good to review the facts of anatomy, insertions + origins, muscle belly shapes, etc. Finch says you'll inevitably have to review it anyways.

Don't "just copy" set a plan for yourself to what you want to achieve, there's many different approaches, you could focus on line work, do a value study (honestly one of the best things you could do to improve your artwork) and do color studies.
If you feel confident with all of this you could go for a full master copy.

how would I draw a crystal ball like in this painting?

>> No.6653319

>>6653201
The effect of the ball is mostly visible because of its surroundings.
What happens is the values inside the ball have been pushed around a bit and edges inside the ball are softened along with speckles of light giving it a solid yet transparent feel.

If you want to draw it, having some kind of backdrop affected by the refraction of the crystal helps, a glass or crystal ball floating in an empty space on your paper isn’t going to look very interesting.

Also, look at the effects a real glass ball have, you cannot really draw something transparent outside a context.
