If you are a /beg/inner or /int/ermediate in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.
Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the drawthread with fundamental exercises.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS wide using one of the following methods:
1. screenshot the image and post that instead
2. change camera capture settings to something smaller
3. send to computer and resize in MSPaint

TRY TO BE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK.
When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help. When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

Are there any free resources specifically geared towards the Academic style of drawing? I found a couple youtube channels but they want $1k for their 52-video course.

Also, is it even worth learning how to draw in the academic style?

yeah but they're not popular because it isn't tranime. they will often teach academic style stuff, but still oriented around digital, too. obviously painting-centric resources are more common I've found. what specifically about traditional drawing are you looking for? dorian iten is a good starting place in general.

alternately, find some videos about bargue plate drawing, too. that's almost always drawing with trad media, and starts you off in a beginner-ish place with academic concepts.

Well after completing this "master study" or whatever you wanna call it I learned that
>I'm way more patient than I thought I was
>implying detail is a lot more convenient than going in and trying to actually draw a bunch of little scales for example
>I need at least a semi-loose sketch to be able to paint fucking anything at all (you can probably tell which dragon I painted without a sketch)
>painting shit like this takes forever
>upgrading to 32gb of ram was a smart idea
>colour still scares me
Obviously this isn't a 1 to 1 copy and I'm not 100% happy with it and I never will be but whatever.
Now I will go back to procrastinating.

The struggle is real. Long hours at work. Crazy wife. Learning to cook. Losing weight.
This is the first time my head has been clear enough while I'm awake and have time. I drew a Tibetan mastiff during a 20 minute break at work.

I might get one of these dogs if I can sell my house and buy one with a bigger yard. If I buy a dog like this here he might eat my neighbor's arm.

experimental tuesday, I wanted to learn how to create animated/dynamic brushes on krita It was easier than though, basically you need to draw multiple blobs for I wanted some kind of coily fur. I can see the potential of using chatgpt+imagemagick or straight sd to create 100+ blobs to make the brush better. Also looking for a excuse to use shape square brush.

does the fur looks good or organic? I myself like it.

Ive only very recently started (yesterday, really). Im using fun with a pencil, but I'm having a hard time with face shapes. Thew big one ended up looking like a muppet. I have shaky hands, and I have trouble with faces in general (as in, just understanding them). Is it a matter of practice, or am I missing something in these early exercises. I don't think its my balls, but maybe im drawing them wrong, or maybe im drawing too small?

>> No.6531029

>>6531025
PS, I think im okay at copying, so the very early explanations of building were a little easier, but its a lot harder to do it on my own. Maybe is there a subject other than faces thats a little easier to grapple with using the forms, so I can get a little better using them before trying to do faces? Also I can't figure out how he does the hair, I made a non-scribble attempt using something like a rectangle to make a simple crop-top like you see on army people, but I dont think it looks how it should.

The face came out like that because there's a common misconception about the ball head when you're a beginner, the ball represent the cranium alone and not the whole head. The easiest solution is to draw a box like this to make the mandible. The pic is shit because I'm on the phone, I hope you can understand what I mean tho
The hair is whole different can of worms, you can worry about them later

Noticed that my gouache paintings can smudge a bit, leaving paint on my fingers when rubbed or touched too much. I don't go around touch my paintings all the time, or rub them, but tried out on a patch of colour on a test paper and realized the surface seems more fragile than I expected. How should I go about protecting the surface? varnish, fixative? Or just leave it as is? as I said I don't go around rubbing them or touching them much, the initial thought came from when I was painting details on an already dry one and rested my hand on the paper with dry paint as though I was drawing. I guess that's just bad technique though, one should draw from the shoulder and so on. Still any thoughts or input?

It's not about getting rid of references, it's about internalizing them. When you've drawn something 1000 times, it's easier to recall the forms and particulars from your mind. Think of every reference you use as adding to your mental library. You see master artists not using references because they have enough shit in their head to pull out and apply, and there's no shortcut to that point other than drawing and observing more.

Today I had too much free time at work and forgot to bring my art supplies, so I decided to create a demo tool I've been thinking about to improve my proportions and accuracy. Basically, copy as well as possible multiple basic shapesappearing on screen. I think I covered all the usual use cases, and maybe I will add more organic blobs in v2 (probably not); I leave the link here if anyone is interested in toying around with it.

Finally calling it "done" although there is a lot of stuff I would still want to change. Original idea was making fanart of Barbariccia from FFXIV, but I got carried away doing the nude and decided to keep it that way.

Quite the learning experience, but I think I should:
-Do some gestures, all my poses are stiff poles.
-Try some small painting with 3 saturated colors only to get some better color feel and control.
-Gotta do some figure drawing again. Anatomy is wonky in parts from all the adjustments I did. This wouldn't have happened if I got the initial pose and figure right.

youre insane. i mean its like relatively easy to mess up on small shit when you dont have a ref, or arent paying attention to the ref because youve gone insane. but id just say its got to do with small inconsistencies. face too far down on the head, positioning of ear too low, hands too large, unnatural positioning of legs, etc. you'd make something 100x better by just redrawing it with a reference for the pose. but why do you wanna fix this? its funny, does its purpose. don't get hung up on every piece, personally leave it as it is, your random use of colour and scribbles is really nice & you're clearly a capable addict.

ahh right that makes sense. id give you that the errors make it expressive kek. the only tip i can think of is to take a photo of yourself in a pose and go over it before redrawing so u dont make small positioning esc errors, but you probably know that. could look cool if the motion was more exaggerated, bent over, crooked, leaning more on the further away leg, would work with the interesting style you have going- you do this well with the vaporeon but imo are a bit subtle on the figure. forgot to mention last post that theres some nice form in sections here (eg the detailed hand, and the uh. back of vaporeon). bless you & have a good day.

Looking back on it, it would look better if omori was holding a book or something, because the hands look so awkward.
His expression is also kind of dull (which is technically in character) but it makes him looks so artificial

I'll keep working

I just got my drawpad today! And im working through loomis. I've been drawing for a couple of days, but I'm not sure exactly what I need to practice to make these come out better. All of these were made with construction but I'm also still copying what his cartoon heads look like. I want to at least get through to poses to start studying some of things im interested in drawing, like characters and such, to try to apply construction and the other stuff to things I think are interesting. Also maybe try to do something other than heads. Can someone give me their thoughts on what I've got, and maybe some parts of the body I can try construction on to vary it up a little from just faces?

You capture the emotion well, is all I can say I am a beginner myself.
If you really want to improve I would advise trying you hand at drawing something that you actually want to draw, to the best of your current ability. From there you can see where you want to put in work more work an focus. I warn you that trying (and not being able to) draw what you want howbyou want it feels like shit, so you may want to just do the Loomis book and get a grip on what it feels like to draw first.
Another book I can recommend for complete betinners is "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain". It teahes concepts and mindset more so than technique like Loomis.

i like how you "fixed" the original by making the woman to appear sexier and younger. Stuff like this boils down to the personal taste. Not all drawn women have to be 90-60-90, sometimes its okay to draw fridge woman.

This is my first attempt at drawing a character. My approach is to try to grasp the shapes as I half-trace half-build. I think the tentacles are really complicated, but where I am finding the most difficulty is actually the fingers/hands. I thought the hands were kinda like two rectangles but I couldn't quite get it right, and I'm not sure what I'm missing. Maybe my line size is too heavy? Or maybe I need to make it into more shapes?

Some things I notice is that her pupils are actually kind of like M shapes, her tentacles end in these zig-zaggy looking rectangles and then a square, and there isn't a huge amount of detail on the face which I think is basically just two circles in shape. The body anatomy is also really tricky, maybe I should try practicing more poses from loomis first and then come back to this. I really like this character so I want to try some different poses and get a better handle on the overall anatomy, though I think this pose in general was a little difficult. The arms are also something I think need work but I'm not quite sure what is off about them. The upper arms definitely feel too straight. I am also dreading drawing the toes.

Overall I'm trying my best to shed symbol drawing and trying to understand how the character is constructed, but I think I'm still missing some key points. I just don't know exactly what they are. Can anyone offer some advice? Maybe I should try a simpler pose or a less complicated character, or just do some more pose exercises in my loomis book.

Since the body seems to hinge to the right for the top one, the left arm wouldn't fully reach the floor with a full palm. Shoulder muscle bumb is definetily too large for that figure. Arm looks like it is forced more to the front and combined with bring too long looks unnatural. Torso looks fine so arm might be throwing off your perception of it being correct.

In his defense. My original was already going for a coomer angle and the original character is herself young and attractive. There is just so much you can do to change the proportions to fit the correct anatomy when the base is "too wide" where it shouldn't be.

If you know a lot about how to make a character or whatever the background isn't that big of a deal and if you take baby steps you'll be surprised with how much you'll learn going forward and how good simple backgrounds can be if used correctly.
