If you are a /beg/inner or /int/ermediate in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.
Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the drawthread with fundamental exercises.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS wide using one of the following methods:
1. screenshot the image and post that instead
2. change camera capture settings to something smaller
3. send to computer and resize in MSPaint

TRY TO BE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK.
When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help. When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

When it comes to develop your own art style (comics, cartoon, anime, etc...), how early should one focus on it? Assuming the person wants something that has a more unique flavor to it.

I understand the cope mechanism of many begs who call their shit art their "own style", and that you should focus first studying the many aspects of drawing before giving your own twists. But my question is around exactly that: How much study? Should the person first master subjects before developing their own path, or they should start experimenting somewhere in the middle?

Decided to draw something original as a break from copying stuff. I wanted to shade it but honestly have no idea how to go about it, since separating the colors and shading each one separately would make the level of darkness/light uneven at points of colors changing. Also next time I see a cat I'll stare at it real hard, taking special notice of where it's ears are.

Started this a while ago but never finished it, frankly I think it looks like shit.
I fell for the just draw meme and although I did see some initial improvement from drawing straight up abominations, I quickly stagnated and haven’t improved since.
I’ve wasted 4-5 months drawing garbage and learning bad habits

All 5 out of 5 art books mentioned this topic. They all say students worry about developing style. Dont worry anon. You already have a style. You just dont have enough observation skill + drawing experience to notice your style. Think of it this way: did you ever had to practice your own signature? Drawing is the same stuff. I wanted to see if my blondie's design could blend well enough with other blondies that can well be compared to her. There's barely any reasonable procedure here, just me seeing if her design was on pair with the other two when reduced to these very small chibis; sometimes I get the feeling her design is still pretty amateurish and Donut-Steel-like, but Im not really sure anymore.

i haven’t visited /ic/ in a while but from what i remember realistic styles are king here (rightly so, for developing fundamentals), so i hope my question isn’t retarded.

i really like art styles like picrel that have exaggerated straights and curves, and i was wondering what advice some of you might have for achieving that style? obviously not to copy the style, because i hate when people ask questions like that, but to understand the method behind it, i guess. i have been trying to incorporate straights against curves in my style, but it seems i always pussy out and make it too complicated or stiff. no feeling of motion in what i draw. hopefully this makes sense.

I'm sorry I do not like the color palette. I feel like that yellow doesn't go with anything, and the background is too bright, it's fighting with the characters. Make a desaturated darker background to make the saturated and bright character stand out against it.

Final, how did it turn out?
>>6510860
Proportions are off. Rightmost character is the worst offender. Arms legs are too long or too short respectively. She has no glutes. Practice your anatomy by using references. Then layer over your attempt over the reference. Then draw the corrections.
Fabric folds are poor on the right character. Shoes are cartoonish.
I like the center pose.
>>6510885
You have no gesture. It’s all stiff. You drew doll bodies focusing on anatomical accuracy but not flow. There nothing to exaggerate when your art is stiff. That’s why you have no feeling of motion.

I honestly don't know and that's the part that's stressing me out. The uneven mid torso? The lack of lines on the body indicating muscle? The even throughout line weight? I can't tell if the structure itself is fucked or if things just need to be tweaked to make it look ok. It's really disheartening when you look at your own work, realize it's shit, but can't understand why. I don't know if it's just fucked from the ground up or just needs to be modified

Look how your structure sketch has guiding lines along all of the axis. Now look how your final version doesn't. A lot of that dimensionality is lost when all you have is an outline.

Look at your hand in real life. Look at wrinkles on your knuckles and the way the webbing of your thumb creases and overlaps with the meat of your palm. All those things help give a sense of form, dimension, and depth. You should try drawing them, or at least indicating them.

The final is also much rounder and lumpier than your sketch would suggest it should be. The hand has a lot of bone and not too much fat on the fingers and back side, which would make the angles harsher and straighter.

To draw from imagination you must have a strong visual library.

Learn construction (Morpho has many books on this, Proko has beginner-friendly videos). Use this construction to re-draw images you like/want to draw in the style of yourself. Simplify complex anatomy into rudimentary shapes. Yes, even stylized anime characters have the foundations of anatomy.

Then put the details on top of those simple constructions. Learning anatomy will help with this, but you can fake it with reference while you learn.

Do this a lot until you can imagine how the parts fit together without looking at a reference. This will take a while.

Look at the first few pages of FWAP and see how drawing a wrapping line around a circle makes it look like a 3D sphere instead of a flat circle.
Or, just draw a simple cube. A cube looks 3D.
The illusion of depth in 2D drawings pretty much always comes down to one of those two principles, wrapping lines or drawing the outline of 3D forms.

In the first few pages Loomis implies that anything can be constructed through the use of basic forms as building blocks when starting a drawing by providing you with guidelines that you can follow rather than guessing where things are supposed to be. Once finished you can get rid of superfluous guidelines but still be left with a solid feeling drawing because of the construction. I don't understand what he's talking about because getting rid of the guidelines do not leave you with a solid feeling result.

I mean, they all have multiple books that cover both.

Construction is simplified 3D forms. Spheres, cubes, cylinders, etc. used to construct a representation of the body. Anatomy is the actual muscles/fat/bones that those simple 3D forms represent.

It's not uncommon for parts of them to be taught in parallel, because they're complementary. However anatomy can be much more complex and require a lot of memorization, so starting with construction is a good way to get your foot in the door and then build on top of it with anatomical knowledge.

I personally find the Morpho books to have the best balance of both.

Anons i have another question
If I’m being honest I have no interest in drawing very dramatic poses with characters punching, falling, etc. poses where it’d be very easy to tell where the line of action is.

I like to draw characters standing, doing natural poses, leaning on a desk, sitting relaxed. It’s harder for me to tell where the line of action is. Picrel (random example from twitter) is obviously a character in a stoic pose, but i don’t think it’s stiff? Can anyone here please help me with that?

line of action is just an abstraction, some pros (animators where this line of action is even more prevalent) arent very fond of the concept. If you have a hard time finding the line of action, there are other things you should be thinking also,
where is the balance of the figure?
where is the figure stretching, wedging, twisting in x,y,z?
how does this pose feels like (empathy)?
what would the body look like before and after the current pose?
what is dragging?
whats the active/inactive side?

and so on, for example I don't like the pose, it would look more menacing by pushing more the chest forward and bringing the shoulders a little more to the back and lower (green line). Not a fan of that artist a crappy version of Rokudou no Onna-tachi

Line of action doesn't need to be a dramatic fighting pose. In the examples provided it shows >>6510953
A simple standing pose. Line of action gives flow and a sense of movement.

My line of action is in the spine. Arcs are naturally appealing to human eyes. If you want to keep drawing stiff then just draw over doll bodies.

Getting comissions seems like a chore, also seems like more work for less money. The first art jobs in game industry I applied for were paying over 2,5k as an entry level job, which is way more than what I could get through comissions without all the hassle of getting customers, etc. Like, I've done 2 comissions in the last couple of years. You could do dynamic sketching first, the line control exercises it starts with are great for beginners. You may want to do a perspective course while you do the basic form exercises. Once you've got the basic forms down you can do Fun With a Pencil to learn basic construction skills.
Morpho is good, but the author himself said it's more art reference rather than art instruction, so beginners may get a bit lost if they don't already know the basics and have decent self-teaching skills. It's fine once you've got a figure drawing method down, like Vilppus or Michael Hamptons. They both have videos on YouTube which help a lot.
