render things other than just the boobs and face. The ugly catpaw looks like a cope for not being able to drraw hands.

Yeah you should have gotten a reference or something from an egirl wearing one of these things. Ends up bringing down the piece.

As for background I suppose it depends what you want to emphasize, is she streaming, or is she dressed like this in public? Is it supposed to be an intimate moment or is it supposed to be a selfie? By adding a background you further the narrative of the drawing making the piece more interesting for the viewers.

hmm im not sure how to answer. i guess there is no real narrative, it's just a random painting of a random cat girl. i wasnt trying to tell any sort of story. i just like to focus on the character themselves like a lot of other artists who do just the flat white bgs. besides, if my focal point (the girl) isn't well done, a bg won't be doing anything but trying to hide that. i'd like to focus on bringing her to the next level

Refine your wobbly ass linework
Make the character emotive, the face, the pose, the hands, the outfit, they don't convey anything, it's like a doll
Compare your art to artists you aspire to and see the differences
Break your comfort zone and try to add a background

I wouldn't say the background is to distract just that it would make viewers more interested in your art. I think the fact that you have no idea who she is or what she is doing is what makes it feel bland.

I am not necessarily saying that you have to start doing backgrounds but if you want to get away with drawing no backgrounds you HAVE to improve your compositions as well as overall skill level.

IG meaning Production IG, a prominent anime studio. In the 90s they were making movies that are still considered among the most well-animated of all time like Ghost in the Shell and Jin-Roh. Their style of animation and design tended to be more realistic which is why that anon pointed you in the direction of GITS >>6509223

Hideaki Anno also mastered mechanical animation in his first or second year of college if I recall correctly and after that he shifted his goals into directing.
I don't think these people are talented, they just have a really big interest in their craft, which makes them transform the hobby into almost a religion. Not only that but the art colleges in Japan are generally very good and they have tons and tons of resources in native language.
I say this because I had experiences in life that made me realize it comes down to putting in the hours.
1. When I was admitted into university, I got sent into january for my first semester (this was in july of the previous year). That gave me 5 months of neetism.
I was having a talk with my father of cool ways to earn lots of money around the 5th of said month and one of the options was to make art commissions (I had never tried to do those, I didn't even have online accounts), but the next day, I opened an account and started drawing in tryhard mode.
This thing consumed me, I woke up at 9 am, had breakfast and kept drawing until 4 am. I read art books for the first time and I did lots of studies, old masters, anime, movie composition, you name it.
When those 5 months ended, the first painting I had done for the internet was incomparable to the last. And it was a blast.
Pay was good too, from the get go I had $100+ commissions with what? 150 followers?
2. You don't try to think about it, but those 'talented' animators, illustrators, directors...They all had at least 4 years of college where they were able to only work in art. Homework? Group projects? Subjects? All fields where they could practice and practice and practice. I, for example, am studying engineering, I'm investing 5 years of my life with a brain in full capacity, 5 years in which I have almost no free time (semester starts the 13th) and can't go back into the art atmosphere because I know I can't handle the two worlds.
