I can either draw characters on a white background Or an environment with no living beings in it but whenever I try to draw a character IN an environment it looks off, wrong and messy. Did anyone had similar struggles? how did you fix it?

since you are posting weeb shit, just do like them and pose your 3d model, trace it, add bug eyes and then load up blender or clip paint assets and cut and paste buildings or cars or temples in the background randomly. perspective and artistic merit doesnt matter as long as you convert to lineart first.

but anon, i can draw "backgrounds" to a certain extent, the problem is that I can't seem to put a character in it without it looking unnatural and out of place.

What advice would you have given if I didn't post weeb shit?

Add shadows, lights (and preferably reflected lights) that match on the background and the foreground and the character. Then add you are feeling better add reflected lights too

Do you sketch the character in a environment before you commit to drawing one of the other?
You should try sketching both at the same time. It helps you visually plan out both. It would also help if you scenario or scene you want to portray with you characters, other then them just standing there. Unless you want them standing there in a field of flowers or something.

Make sure the character is in the correct perspective. For me it helps a lot to make a box mannequin of the characters in the scene whenever I feel they don't work, like pic related. Also having the characters interact with background helps, like sitting on a bed and having the mattress and pillows bend under the characters weight, things in the foreground overlapping them etc.

Try drawing characters in a cube and progressively adding detail. Also 'environment' is a pretty fucking broad word, you should ideally understand everything you want to draw which means either researching geography or architecture.

The least visually offensive drawings I've made is when they're just standing in the middle of a flower field or whatever, the more details I add the more it falls apart. I tried different approaches but the characters always look like it doesn't belong to the scene, even when they're interacting with objects in the environment.

One thought I tend to consider when drawing a character in an environment is to try and make them not engage with the audience. Have them interact with their surroundings, or be occupied with their own business, so they're part of a whole, rather than the focus. While technically this may not yield immediate results, it may help change your mindset about your characters, and thus help better integrate them in to their context.
