If you are a /beg/inner or /int/ermediate in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.
Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the drawthread with fundamental exercises.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS wide using one of the following methods:
1. screenshot the image and post that instead
2. change camera capture settings to something smaller
3. send to computer and resize in MSPaint

TRY TO BE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK.
When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help. When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

I'm in the same boat and I've come to realize that "just draw" is an oversimplification, and that's why it's so confusing to people like you and I. What I think it means in reality is that if you want to do anything, you must consistently practice it. Over the last few months, I've been learning a fighting game and besides just playing the game and getting raw experience, I've also had to read about mechanics and practice combos. I think that's what drawing is like, and I'm going to apply the same philosophy once I get my hands on a book. That is, doodle if I want, since that gets you familiar with the pencil and lines and shapes just like just playing got me familiar with my character and the game, and spend a dedicated amount of time reading and practicing the contents of the book, just like I practiced combos and mechanics I read about. When I first tried to draw, all I'd ever do is study the book, but that's like if I watched videos of people doing combos and practiced those combos, but never actually played the game and applied them. Of course it's not fun sitting there grinding shit, I wouldn't have fun if all I ever did was practice combos, either.
Really, you spend so much time rationalizing and agonizing over the simple action of drawing, that "just draw" is all you need to do at the end of the day.

You get better at drawing by drawing. Many people here procrastinate by trying to find the perfect resource or method but in reality, the only way to get better is by actually drawing and figuring things out yourself. Teachers and books, that suit your personality and goals, can help guide you in the right direction, but all of the hard work depends on you putting pencil on paper. Most things people want to draw are quite difficult, figures, faces, animals, landscapes, cars, mechs, buildings, etc. So it's a long road ahead.
Ideally you would be drawing things you want to draw, that are just slightly outside your comfort zone. If it is too challenging then you may give up in frustration. If it's too easy it can be boring and unproductive.
Like the other Anon suggested, FZD's video is pretty good for getting ideas for what is easier and harder to draw.

I have a handful of reasons, but one of the bigger ones was pic related. I was fond of it and wanted to make more like it.
I initially thought that using a photo background was taking the easy, low effort route, but I think using the photos for this set of pictures actually forced me to address areas of drawing that I'd often avoided in the past. The image I previously posted would likely look fine with a simpler background, but I'm determined to make it work with the photo at this point.

Did some cartooning as my warmup today before doing more work on forms. Gotta ask my fellow /beg/tards, how do you separate your ego from your work to critique it yourself? I'm trying, but I find that I think it's ok, then come back later to think it looks worse, then later to revile it to the point I don't want to look at it.
This goes the same for just simple practice and tutorial work.

then you can start looking at the work you did and think about the places where you went wrong and what parts you might've actually done ok with. Embrace the journey, keep your old pictures saved somewhere if possible and look back at them later to check up how you've improved.

Literally all you have to do is angle your head down a little, angle it away from the side that hurts, and then you can gently pinch and rub that muscle. Maybe look into guys like Kim Jung Gi or other Superani artists, tomfoxdraws or Scott Robertson for the constructional approach and just grow into a character illustration career because that shit is pretty advanced if you want to do it right. Learn to draw in perspective and just build up/combine references until you get what you want. If your really wanted to try and struggle through your funk, my suggestion will be to start small, like really small. I kept doodling things that made me happier, and that helped me whether my deeper bouts of depression. If you can only do small scribbles, keep doing them, don't allow yourself to stop. If you do stop, don't beat yourself up, just pick up a pencil when you can and try again. I had to do that many times.

You may think that it's just some cringe motivational platitudes, but I truly believe that failing is the only way to get better, as long as you learn something. You shouldn't be afraid to fail, it's just a necessary stepping stone on your path to mastery. I never throw away any of my work, because I know in couple years I am going to look at it and see just how much I improved. Even now I see improvements, when I flip just a few pages in sketchbook. They may not be much, but it's about progress, no matter how small. I actually really dislike that feeling when I look at what I drew and feel that it's good, because complacency breeds stagnation. your drawing is stiff compare to the ref. Look at the plant leg, most of the weight should be there. Also the left side arm in your drawing doesn't show the stretch the ref is doing. When drawing a figure you should push the form a bit more.

Basically you're supposed to move your hand while thinking about the form in your head, which after a while you'll gain a connection with actually "feeling" the form while you do it. You can actually do this with just one line, as long as the line is relatively in the accurate spots. Feeling the form is basically drawing outer shapes of the major masses and drawing cross contour lines to describe how exactly the forms are sculpted.
As a rule of thumb you should never draw the same line more than 3 times, unless you are deliberately trying to make that line thicker and darker using a buildup method. Otherwise you drawings will fail to be clear and you'll struggle to finish your work later.
I know it's fucking annoying at first but drawing will be so much faster and more apparent with your mistakes when you adopt these good habits.

>> No.6489705

>>6489698
You just have to pick a direction, like you're mixing profile, a back view, and the glasses/eye are frontal. We can see the back of the head (indicated by the pigtail/hathole), outer contour of the face suggests the head is in profile facing the same direction as the gun is firing, and the glass is nearly a circle which is indicating we're looking right at it from the front. All three are fighting each other, making it weak, instead of making a coherent over all suggestion of which direction the head facing.

I'm in this weird place were I've been drawing for almost 10+ years without ever really learning fundamentals. This couple of years I started achiving one of my teenage dreams of gaining an online following and I get my commissions slots filled really quickly every time I'm open.
But I don't really know how to draw a simple shape in perspective and I rely TOO much on reference even for the most simple basic poses.

Not good. There's a reason why I don't do it. :D I can't paint for shit. Colorblind and it makes even grey hues mix together, which is the reason why I never like to do it. I CAN/COULD do it, but it's a bit difficult and annoying to do when colors and hues mix together and I cant' see it.

Added latest attempt at even slight rendering. I know it's not highly rendered, but it's something.

>>6489776

Thanks! Yeah I know I'm not /beg/ anymore, but since I'm not a pro either and this is nowdays an /int/ -thread also, I figured I'd post here since I don't really know where else to.

>Where did you learn anatomy?

George B. Bridgmans constructive anatomy + the human machine, which I've drawn through a bazillion times since I bought them over 10 years ago as a teenager. Ofc started with some poor anatomy book with highly rendered pictures as does almost everyone, but since then it was mostly Bridgman + drawing humans from references. My characters used to be super stiff, so last couple of years it's been me trying to draw fluid characters with good anatomy. It's a long journey, constantly learning new. Prokos structure videos have also been superb. Easier to draw 3Dish anatomy when you know your structure.

Thanks!

I think it's easier to understand if you think about the whirlwind as one ellipse. Then you just draw the contouring lines which follow the ellipses form. And then you mix it up a little bit, as in that there's some thicker and thinner parts in the ellipse. And in the end it's an ellipse with some bigger circles going through it - some bigger, some smaller. Don't really know what else to say. Learning structure is imo. the key to get good. gonna ask here cause it's the most popular thread and no /stupidquestions/
I remember seeing websites like this that other artists would tweet from/about but I can't remember their names. it was basically a basic form you could fill out to send requests/suggestions/crits/ask the artist questions and I'm thinking of using one of those to get some suggestions going for stuff to draw as well as having unfiltered, honest critique from my followers cause twitter is too fake nice and useful critique is very rare

I don't know exactly what to say, try finding some color theory books, and study renderings you like from other artists.
