Is it necessary to learn cross hatching? I don't particularly care for those style of drawings and it seems kinda pointless

Its a way to achieve the look of grays using only black, and can be used to indicated texture or form etc...

Not really a reason. High quality ink is as expensive as high quality paint. Hatching create dynamic effects that are hard to create with color.

It's the best way to create form and texture, it's very easy to do and essential if you want to create art. I use crosshatching for practicing.
