You're not painting with the hard round brush, the reason it looks terrible is because you do not understand form well enough to be able to describe the different planes involved to give the illusion of depth and form and you try to compensate that with an airbrush.

You do not need to shade every stand of hair. It is nice to have details but with that you a are making the head look flat because of all the hair bands having neatly detailed shading. This is also made moer apparent by not having a lot of shading on the face (I know it is still wip). It is more important to make the head feel round this can be done by focusing the light into one area instead of individually shading all the hairs. Your rendering details look really nice otherwise.

Maybe this helps? I did change some stuff about the positioning of the eyes and ear.

i'd like to be able to achieve stuff similar to his. i know its not always preferable to shade every individual strand but they do, and it somehow looks good

go for a lot of gradient layers overlay/multiply/whatever, see the glossy sort of gradients in those examples, then have those painted strands that aren't overblended

it is subtle on these but you can see that they all put emphasis on the roundness of the head first and the details come later.

>> No.6451316

>>6451282
what you mean is hair texture. it's different than painting single strands because it's just subtle detail on bundles of hair instead of defined lines like you did. I've had more success using low opacity hard edged brushes personally
this video helped me a lot with it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kkmrgc8ca3A

I see. I am not sure know how to help you after that. it comes down to how much detail is too much and how much is fine. On the process while we work it tends to happen that as we get tired our attention naturally starts to get narrower and narrower and and focus on smaller and smaller area of the picture where we tend to cram more and more of those "cool shiny details." But we loose focus on the big picture and it comes out awkward with one small area of the picture being detailed but almost totally disconnected from the rest.

I can only guess this might have happened with your process and the eyes on. >>6451226

This is nothing special just normal attention fatigue. The best way combat this is to take breaks more frequently and allow the mind to rest itself, just a few minutes is okay. And then when you come back look at the picture from a far view to see it as it is fully. This is even done in traditional art classes when you put your picture down to the wall and need to look at it from far away to get a fresh look

Since you do digital you can also use digital methods like flipping the canvas left-right periodically or zooming out and then back or temporarily turning the picture to greyscale etc. The main goal is to break looking at the very same thing for long time period and give the mind a break or a new perspective.

This does look a bit better, the eyes especially, but the cheeks are way too low. It would fit if you went less semi realistic with the proportions, but as of now it doesn't fit.

Keep changing/refreshing your view like Anon said in >>6451369 art is a complex process and you simply have to make mistakes to learn from them even if you keep making them eventually you will learn that is the price to pay but trust me it is worth paying.
