Why You Should Copy Anime:
https://i.imgur.com/zNDsyF0.jpg
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kbKqIJcIUCw
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dgjx6y6B_G8

**Strive for quantity AND quality.**

Anime Studying:
>Copy anime references exactly and draw them from memory. Use illustrations, screenshots, anime figures, 3D models, etc.
>Don’t copy recklessly. Use construction, color theory, and other fundamental concepts to rehearse a drawing process that you can later easily manipulate for original artwork.
>Post all of your anime studies. Post even when you’re told not to. Create an art community that actually draws and improves together instead of just talking about it.
>Number your attempts and link to your previous posts.
>Critiquers should lead by example by posting their studies.

General Anime Style Discussion:
>Questions about achieving certain styles/techniques/compositions etc.
>Drawing methods, study habits, resources, tutorials, tools, software, etc
>Be specific and try to post a sample of your study attempts before asking for help.

**Draw copies from good anime styled references to mindfully up our mileage, internalize appealing aesthetics, and learn from each other’s processes and knowledge.**

In geometry a line is 1 dimensional, in art they're thin two dimensional shapes.
Don't treat them like a 1 dimensional boundary that you outline things with to make a drawing. Treat them like a shape that needs to be drawn, because they are the drawing.

I kind of see what he means. Though you have some lines that are drawn smoothly, there are a lot of smaller curves where you overlay short strokes to try to find the shape.
Have you tried that thing in the Krenz video where he splits a complicated curve with points into non-overlapping shorter curves, then draws each segment? I wonder if this might help you since I see there are certain strokes that you made confidently in one shot. In general, I think it will get better as your dexterity improves.

Repostan a question from /beg/.
So if a /beg/ only wants to draw anime girls and nothing else, what's stopping him from acquiring basic line weight techniques (they develop with practice anyway), learning some construction, and then tracing AI artwork while fixing its most egregious flaws? It's not like anyone would complain about tracing AI shit, and it's completely unique as a base, there's no plagiarism happening.
So theoretically, all that is stopping you is your own integrity, and a possible desire to go pro (AI art would not be enough for commissions).

I tried with some of the default brushes and the basic chalk one got me some positive results. Though, it's pressure based, so I need lighter strokes with the pen, but it's ok. Also, I need a big canvas to use thicker line strokes (or I lose the texture), lord save my pc cpu/gpu.

I guess I will need more color theory and light studies to create the shining effect, but the texture is getting there, which is the most important.

First study... Good lord, this is bad. It is looks even worse when I put the sketch over the original. Angles and width very wrong. Also, I spent way too much time making the angle lines. I never realized how bad I am drawing straight lines in different directions. And it was about simple shapes and CSI, I ended up with no shapes and no CSI.

Well, I will cope with this being the first one. The hundredth one will be better, certainly.

Maybe I should use two colors, one for lines and the other for the final shape. And perhaps I should pick more simple artworks.

>> No.6456102

Whether it's an artist or a course, what matters is that you have a certain degree of interest in it and keep at it. From there you're bound to gain something from the time and efforts you invested into it.
Since you're already taking Proko's figure drawing course I'd recommend to watch Saitou https://www.youtube.com/@saitonaoki/videos as it will provide you with a lot of little challenges you can try to reproduce by yourself, such as this video for example https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=04wTQt5gaWY that I randomly clicked on. There are hundreds others so go and be curious.

>"pick an artist you like and copy them" makes me paralyzed...
That way you'll get to learn about what you want vs. not want to do better, because right now the biggest challenge you need to face is your mentality. Art isn't a straight road with a best objective way someone can just give you. You gotta learn what is your own way.

The problem is OP made the brim too large compared to the reference, so in trying to keep their drawing consistent with the reference design has to put the eyepatch too low on the face to compensate. If you drew through the OP drawing their eyes would be misaligned as is.

one thing they taught us in high school by some lecturer who was visiting was to do this "duck method" you basically grab your pencil in a clasp like a duck bill almost, close one eye, pull it up to your open eye and measure the angle by lining up the pencil with the line you want, then you just hold the angle and use another pencil in your other hand to mark the angle on your paper. you can even go back and double check you got your measurement right, i do this alot and it really helps.

You did really well.

I'd use orange/brown and purple predominately in your piece. Her skin tone is brown so a slightly more orange hue for the pumpkin and other things would work well here while keeping your the number of colors in the piece low.

The key is to use as few colors as possible to really sell this stuff.
Look up color gamuts, james gurney explains this well.

That way you can use an ascent color to bring out points of interest like the yellow/green mixture for the eyes you did to make the eyes stands out as it goes against the orange/brown and purple. Make the contrast more jarring by making the orange and brown colors here closer. Saito naoki has some videos on color ascents.

I also wouldnt really make the bow red since it could clash with the other colors
Maybe make the bow orange but keep it distinct from her skin tone.
Also you can make the tear not clash by making it colorless. Not all water has to be blue.
Same with the eye glow, maybe make it more purplish instead of blue.

less is better

don't be mislead by the post timestamps, this were done while in my IRL work, and also this is the first time and so i've been researching/understanding the first 2 hours of the krenz lecture. For a first timer >>6460816
should be between 25 - 40 min dont look for perfection, first time always suck the second time now you kind of own what you are doing, you have learnt something.

>>6460826
The exercise purpose is train 2 things, 1. shape accuracy (how spot on you are from reference) 2 shape abstraction/recognition.
in reality what I'm hoping to learn? desu I don't know. The thing that picked my interest is that krenz (with all due respect) is a somewhat of a renown name from a foreign culture that alone is valuable, but after watching his lecture is way more interesting the dude is a painter foremost and it shows, is a different mindset (shape is first class citizen). I jokingly called them schizo lines because memes but its a kind of "picture plane" but way more street smarter https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bfh4JvyCtV8 this is a more western example of this kind of grid.
What i've gain? so far a new way (for me, this isnt and shouldnt be a novel idea) to do gesture drawings I'm a engineering first and while I do gesture daily I'm always bother about how otherworldly most artists explain this
exercise, so him breaking down gesture in solely shape + angle is way more intuitive and useful for me since any curve can be deconstructed geometrically in three points start + max/min + inflection see picture.

tl;dr another tool in the box

Anon you did a 40min not brague drawing but you dont even in have the character laid in nor is it accurate. I really don't understand how you or anyone else in this general doesn't feel like you're just wasting your time with these schizo grids when learning construction and anatomy will get you all futher in the long run especially when you admitted that you're not even sure what your supposed to be learning from it. You're all just blindly following bread crumbs of what this guy taugh without having any solid goals of your own.

>> No.6461455

>>6461432
Not that anon. But, "this guy we blindly follow" is actually an amazing artist who also did study anatomy and construction, and teaches about it in his more advanced class. There is a lot of value in his lessons anon, perhaps you should watch the videos to form a solid opinion. The shape accuracy study purpose is NOT to be an alternative to other studies.

Also, you don't expect people in their first attempts to get it right.

>> No.6461679

>>6461432
valid criticism, cool I didn't know about the bargue method until now, I will check it out later. But your doubt concerning "you admitted that you're not even sure what your supposed to be learning from it" is the same from any other idea method on this board, ask globally on /ic/ what they are looking to get from doing DAB, loomis, Bridgman, etc most probably wouldn't know does that the method will not work? probably not.
Right now i'm in a exploratory fun phase, anything that piques my interest I will try it at least once and evaluated its value on the go, for example this schizo grid, enveloping, etc is oddly familiar from other composition, negative and landmarking studies things I havent done in weeks so its a good refresher.
If you like, watch the video then you can also blog post like me about whats a better strategy, but mentioning only do construction and anatomy is too vague, also funny because many top artists would scrunch listen construction before gesture and composition studies ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.

why would I get offended there's nothing wrong with tracing in the first place.

>Aren't you supposed to train your eyes to judge proportions without training wheels?
this is a study, not meant to end as a final piece. secondly the right image is pure eyeballing and only when everything is done I overlap them to see how far I were. Also I tried to put only meaningful lines, my criteria for meaningful lines is (negative space, bone landmark (clavicle, rib, asis) and perspective. honestly this made focus way more than usual on the subject.
>How are you supposed to learn that stuff when you're just going to copy the details in a small triangle?
my interest is not really fit things in triangles, is on the angles and shapes.

I know how talented of an artist Krenz is but more importantly, I know that only 2 of his videos are available in English so no one is getting the full picture of what he's teaching just a tiny snippet of it. Also, you're learning advanced methods then that he's focused on exclusively on training artist more experienced intermediate artist who already knows the basics of drawing and how to improve their skills, not completely fresh beginners who just stumbled into the hobby. Copying is important when learning how to draw however you have to come to terms that this general isn't creating a bunch of Krenz Jr. It's just creating many lost and confused anons who can't seem to translate what they're painstakingly practicing into original artwork and who simply aren't enjoying art.

This might not look better than the last pics I did, but the important thing is that the stuff in the Krenz video works. I used to have to redraw the form multiple times over until I went other the 1st third of the vid. When I overlaid at the very end the only real problem was that the head was positioned too high causing the stuff below the neck to float and the hand being too small, and the very rightmost piece of hair not being far enough.

Next up is to redraw this but from a front profile view using boxes.

Also, does the 2nd krenz video have info the 1st one doesn't?
