Would animating improve my drawings at a faster pace? I imagine there is a lot you can learn from the different perspectives/deformations required for animation.

Oh absolutely. I started an animation course for this precise reason and it's obvious that animating will force you to consider perspective and proportion with each drawing in order to maintain consistency and will give you a sense of perspective and everything required to draw good.

Yes, but animation requires you to be economical with your linework and detail. This is a double edged sword, because sure it means that you will consider those things more often in your illustrations/paintings and your designs might be stronger for it, or you might gimp yourself and forget how to draw detailed things, or it might force you into a particular style without a clear way out. If everything you draw already looks like a cartoon though then yeah its good to learn animation
