A useful think to note about these ink illustrations is that they were done on pretty massive boards. I was shocked when I saw one in real life.
Especially the old comic stuff drew on boards bigger than the "standard" boards issued to comic artists.

If you mean the resizing, they didn't get cucked out of space that severely back in the day. And in a way, the resizing pushed them in a good direction, since they needed to have very strong composition and readability. Even cartoony gag strips have very clever use of value.
If it's colouring, back then it wasn't nearly as bad as the photoshop monkeys today. Not as good as the B&W, but most newspaper strips were left intact.
