Best way to kick a bad drawing habit?
I draw the jawline a certain way every time I draw without reference. I've done it for years and I want to draw it a different way but no matter how much I study from references and copy them, I default back to that jawline shape when I have to work from imagination. It drives me nuts.

>> No.6413688

If file size isn't an issue .png is preferable since PNGs are have lossless compression unlike JPGs. This effectively means if a .jpg is opened and edited multiple times it loses information and degrades in quality.

The reason you would choose .jpg over .png for paintings or coloured work is because of printing, which may not be relevant to your needs. The reason for this is .png is in RGB not in CMYK which is what's used in printing so there is a risk of discrepancy with the colour. There are other ways to address this besides using .jpg and it's very situational, so overall I would still say .png the preferable choice.

Study different ways of drawing it. Drawing is partially about muscle memory so when you think about drawing a "jaw" you instinctly rely on how you have drawn jaws in the past unless you make an effort not to.

You need to set a day or two aside and draw a lot of jaws in the new way you want to draw them.

>form
Making a 2d image look 3d by applying perspective.

>value
in the absolute dumbest terms, it indicates a plane change and/or allows the viewer to separate objects from another. See the example. If all the squares were black, it would look like one shape instead of 3 separate shapes. On a single cube, it would indicate the direction the light source.

>gesture
Difficult to understand unless you have some semblance of form. If you combine all of the small shapes of a figure into one large shape, the gesture is essentially the "motion" or curve the large shape is making. Usually this is one big curve called the "line of action" and doesn't necessarily only apply to figure drawing.

Can someone explain me how color space and color profiles actually work? And how should you go about choosing your color space settings before doing your paintings before and after?
I just don't get it, I've heard you can work in a ProPhotoRGB color space then export it on SRGB which is good for web, but I don't fully understand how can you fit a color space that allows for overly saturated colors, to be used on a smaller color space? Maybe I am getting this wrong? is there anyone that has good knowledge on this to explain it? YouTube videos don't go deep enough.
And on Photoshop it sort of makes sense, but on Illustrator it seems to work differently, and it's kind of strange, I haven't figured out how you're supposed to embed color spaces when saving your files and saving on PNG, I think only got it working on web (legacy) with PNG 8/24 but the regular exporting doesn't allow for any settings, and while I could just save things in jpg or tiff, sometimes you need your images to have transparency, like watermarks, or that they are lightweight.
I wouldn't make fuss about it but sometimes I work on some color profile just to save the image and see that the colors are all washed out, the difference between an image in RGB 1998 to a SRGB one is visible enough that I can't just ignore it, also I'm worried that even if I work on something like ProPhotoRGB then embed it into SRGB the person that recives the illustration sees something completely different, and yes the screen is a factor too but I just want to make sure I'm not fucking something up on my end.
Pic related is a swatch of most saturated hues in ProPhotoRGB and saved with SRGB embedded, it seems it looks about the same as in Photoshop

>>6420642
The weird thing is that when I go into save for web (legacy) in Photoshop the preview shows the colors differently, then when I save it and open it on my pc image's preview it looks correct (pic related).
Sometimes I change color spaces and visually nothing changes, this happens when I try to go from RGB 1998 to SRGB back and forth, it remains in washed out state, I may be fucking up the settings but I generally go edit>color settings, change the RGB color space, then edit>convert to profile then choose whatever I want to work as.
Anyway maybe I should just stick to cucking myself into SRGB but those saturated hues of ProPhotoRGB could be useful, and if I can export them correctly for others to see I would be happy with that.

If you have no money or can't create your own website there's not much of a choice.
There are other that charge but if I recall aren't that expensive, like cargo.site, they have templates but it allows you to customize the pages yourself, you can use it free just for testing it but if you want it running for others to see it you'll have to pay for it.

Ok... This is really complicated. I have made hours and coutless of tests about this. The main problem is that the image color profile goes through layers and layers of softwares.

It's all messed up. For instance:
1) The new photo viewer of Windows manages colors in a different way from the old one, which is still installed in the system.
2) A program like CSP does not use color management (you can use the color proof, but the color picker will be wrong).
3) On Windows you can add the color profiles as "advanced color profile", but no one knows what it does because there is not a documentation about it (avoid this setting).

The more I test stuff, the more I get headache. I have just setted everything as sRGB IEC61966-2.1, and when I save the image, I save it without embedding the color profile and coverting it to sRGB (the coversion should be useless because I worked already in sRGB color space). I'm sorry that I can't really answer.

Also, an unrelated thing. Stuff about color proof in grayscale and gamma.

If you wanted to draw more like someone's style what is the best way to learning to emulate it?
Tracing?
Drawing by reference?
Adding very small things piece by piece?

Obviously I feel like you can't emulate it perfectly and then overtime it'll just find it's way into your art, but yeah. What would be the best place to even start doing that?

What you take into account in the process of creating your painting, reflect it into the artist process you are studying from, see the differences and integrate them (if you want). Basically start from what you already know, compare and integrate as you see fit, some things you really like from x artist so you emulate them, get as close as you can, while getting a confident or reliable process of your own.
Just avoid mindlessly copying, try to get in the head of whoever made that piece and emulate it.

vanishing points with enclosed scenes are kind of tricky. if they're far enough you can kind of estimate them without much issue. if you work in digital you can zoom out quite far and add guidelines, but i'm not sure how practical it'd be in traditional.
what i find helpful, is often things will share horizon lines. for example, if you wanted to rotate an object that's otherwise in a one point perspective scene, the point itself would be in a different place, but it'd share it's horizon with that first point (i visualise this as it sliding along the horizon line). if it was rotated vertically, i'm not sure if there's a vertical equivalent to a horizon, but you'd essentially do the same thing above/below the "main" vanishing point.
it being rotated both horizontally and vertically starts to get a bit complicated. if you're struggling with perspective, don't worry about this for now
a character or figure would generally share it's vanishing point with the scene, but it depends. as it's more organic and rounded vs a cube or object, i wouldn't worry about it too much as long as the horizon/viewpoint looks okay and is generally consistent with the rest of the scene. the other anon's suggestion about drawing them in a box can be helpful to get a feel for it/keep them in scale.
i think this can be hard to visualise with text alone, lmk if you need any clarification or examples and good luck

In english, crayon means a stick of chalk or wax. Like picrel.
In French, it means "pencil". Think regular pencil.

Looking at this drawing, it looks like it was made using wax pastels (close to picrel too). Fancy art shop will have dry pastels and wax pastels. Personally, I prefer the wax ones, the dry ones are closer to colored charcoals. You can also mix the two!

Just imagine enclosed scenes as if you're inside a "box", logically if the structure has right angles it converges somewhere in the horizon line, if you need visualize it, instead of working on an enclosed canvas, create a frame for your piece, then create this big box in 2pp that expands outside of the frame, you'll have already decided where your eye level or horizon line is, then just place each vanishing point where you want them to be, this is for your box, and any other object that aligns with said box.
Basically, your creating a box where things are going to sit, then you'll play camera man and adjust what you want to show on the plane. You can freehand it first then do a small/medium sketch with accurate perspective then blow it up in whatever size you're actually doing the painting. A common mistake for people doing perspective is they start big and go straight at it without any idea at the blank page, from experience it simply doesn't work and you'll get frustrated and will end up rushing it/stopping.
Perspective drawings are harder because they deal with more elements in the plane, so you'll you have to break it down in steps, plan your painting, get some dirty small sketches out first, if you're doing it trad they can be 5x7 cm, in digital something like 640x480 will do, you can use a big canvas and create a few squares for these sketches, you'll have room for the box process (you may end up not doing this anymore in the future, but it has a few other uses anyway) and you'll be doing different iterations right there, and you can get them out quick. Using reference is also suggested, just don't go blind expecting to create a final result right off the bat if you have no mental image or an idea of how things actually look like.
Also watch Vandruff's 1994 perspective lectures, it deals with different kind of measurement systems that may be useful for you, like projecting measurements on space based on translating divisions from 2D measurements.

Don't ctrl+Z too much. A "correct" line isn't necessarily a good one.
I don't know if that's your case, but drawing lines very timorously like you're performing open heart surgery is generally what makes them feel dead. If you zoom in on a high res versions of drawings you like, you'll probably find a lot more overlaps and small gaps than you would've thought.
That's not to say you should be careless, just that you shouldn't sacrifice what looks good for what you think would be proper.
If you have trouble getting out of the mindset of just tracing the sketch try lowering the opacity more, gaussian blurring it, or changing the colour if you don't do that already.

depends on the way you do it right now. it may be that you do lines in a single, slow, deliberate motion, which usually makes for "boring" looking lines with equal thickness across the board.
people usually add depth or thickness to corners or certain areas of lines by going over them a bit. see something like this for reference:https://youtube.com/shorts/-rJ1twR5Vbg

"gesture drawing" as an activity is a huge meme. It comes from Nicolaides, who couldn't draw for shit.

"Gesture", on the other hand, refers to the pose of the figure. Animators focus on this a lot because the posing and mannerisms of the figure is their whole job. Comic artists and storyboard artists also focus on acting a lot too.

The "gesture" is not a series of wobbly lines. I like Vilppu, but he really created a lot of confusion when he refers to the gesture as a specific thing you do, and not as one aspect of your finished drawing. Proko and Hampton also jumped on this stupid train of thought too. Steve Huston's a bit out there with his "gesture" as "long axis"

Youre a fucking retard and have no clue what youre talking about because you're head is empty and you cant draw.
Every single halfway decent figure drawing class starts with gesture drawing, (also known as quicksketch), the purpose of gesture drawing is to take down the pose quickly and efficiently with mininmal lines, it is essential for drawing with short time limits of 3 to 5 minutes per pose. Youve obviously never taken a figure/life drawing class and are a fucking fraud, pyw and go fuck yourself.

>Proko and Hampton also jumped on this stupid train of thought too. Steve Huston's a bit out there with his "gesture" as "long axis

When i study proportion using the Krenz references or Bargue, do i want to put the reference on a separate screen or something so that its not literally next to my canvas? It ts very close it feels a bit like cheating since its so easy to compare the angles and proportions, or does it not matter as a beg?

Doing things sight-size makes it easier to check the differences. Making it more practical is better than making it unproductively difficult and frustrating for yourself, even if you think it feels like cheating you're doing a lot of work that a person mindlessly tracing would never even think about.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HMX3K3YMbd8
Dorian Iten has some videos of himself doing copies and accuracy exercises and even he does the same thing, same if you look up people doing Bargue on analog.
When you study from life or a reference you won't always have that luxury anyway so it's not like you won't exercise that muscle. You could try out doing some plates with only comparative measuring if you want a challenge, but the amount you draw is more important than how inconvenient the process is.

1) Find a painting app with a practical UI and that can export your project files in a usable format. I like ibisPaint. Autosave is a bonus.

2) Export your project files to your PC often after working in case you suddenly lose access to your phone. Speaking from experience, it might be worth looking into screen mirroring and input options like 'scrcpy' for your device ASAP in case your touchscreen/LCD breaks.

3) Find out how to import project files to your chosen painting app. You might need to know this if you're getting a new phone.

4) It'll take some getting used to, like most skills, but it's very possible to work effectively using only your fingers.

5) On Android, you can use the overview button for peeking at reference while working. That is to say, hypothetically, if you were using your phone to have a wank or something you could:
>hit the overview button on your porn app, setting the thumbnail as a snapshot of that screen
>open your drawing app
>hit the overview button at any time to see the thumbnail of your porn app in the list
*YMMV - Some versions of android have different looking overview menus, some apps might behave in a way that alters their thumbnail

no real answer there. People had different mindsets that drive them in their lives. Some persons need an actual concrete motive or goal to do something or they feel it just wrong and leave it, some persons just find somekind of pleasure in the work, others prefer the modern social interaction that an activity or hobbie can make, so when they dont get that they feel the frustration, others just feel the necessity to do it, like a drug that you can't eliminate, others just transform the shit in an habit, so they need to constantly work, etc, etc No one can tell what is your case only you.
So, if you feel that your mindset is make things because you need to tell something, tell it, if you need that those things need to be original and no made by anyone in the world, i'm sorry but that's is kind of a paradox in a concept level, because you can produce things that never were before, but you can't produce anything from zero all is related, so of course all the stories have been told, but they haven't been told by you.
Of course if is just a hobbie no one cares and neither should you, a hobbie is for having fun, if you are not having fun, leave it, there is plenty of things out there. If you already have that unbreakable bond that creators have with creation, then you already know that you can't leave it, in that case, reconsider the perspective with which you approach your creation process, you don't have to tell something for example, creation doesn't need to have a reason, or just need very simple ones to exist, so you are not mentally compelled to have a deep or intellectual reason for it.

there's that saying "everything has already been said, but not yet by everyone." by creating and putting new things into the world, you are making an impact and there's no telling what opportunities could arise as a result. people you might meet, things you might learn. absolutely still go for it if you want to! artists have a tendency to undervalue their own creations. what you make is more special than you might think. my ideas here are kind of all over the place, but basically: your creations have value even if it may feel like someone is already doing similar things. & creating things is, by its very nature, a positive and productive thing.

You get desensitized the longer you work on a drawing. Regular breaks can help keep you more objective, and it's better doing the last few adjustments and posting the day after you finish.

i dont know tutorials or guides, but in digital one simple way to work is make the sketch in wich you just draw the general idea with any brush, just to define the important shapes and parts, and then you do the lineart and you can just use a brush without pressure sensitivity if you want, any ink related brush should do the work, if not i guess that you can edit the opacity in the settings. You can use any brush, in the end is just you learning what things are more comfy for you, i do all the process in the same brush for example, others prefer two or more brushes to several parts, etc. Procreate should have that opacity option because is not a shitty app.

looks liek you dont know much about the ai. You write a input text that generate an image, so, if you describe the elements of that image, the ai wil made it, so, if you write a girl with x elements, you have it, example "girl with feather jacket, black jeans, red short hair, purple eyes, muscle body".
Of course the more non human like your characters are, the more impossible for the ai to make them. You can train the models to add some things like clothes or objetcs, like ith dreambooth i think, but yeah it can't make complex elements.
What could be useful for you maybe is make some character sheets, with the ai you can using some words like "character sheet, multiple views, character concept art", etc.

Imo you'd better off just manually photobashing rather than fussing with AI. Finding photos and art pieces you like, bashing them together so it's not plagiarism & to better resemble what you were envisioning, then tracing over or using the collage as a reference.

It'll sound silly, but manga is a kind of sequencial art and not a style. How would we, technically speaking, call an illustration or piece of art in "manga" or "anime" style?

"anime style" = a style resembling that usually seen in anime.
