The general thread for Manga / manga-styled comic-making, manga-style illustration and related comic work.

Support each other and talk about your work or the work of others that excites you. Inking, character design, paneling / layout, writing, planning, and other discussions are all welcome.
Post resources, questions, in-progress pages, breakdowns of other works, etc. If a work is not yours, credit the maker (unless it's fucking obvious like a full page of One Piece or something).
Thanks to everyone for making /mmg/ a level-headed and helpful place. Remember, drawing and making comics and manga are difficult endeavors, and we're all in this struggle together.

Some western / indie publishers of Manga:

Saturday AM ( https://www.saturday-am.com/ )
> Digital indie magazine, seems to be on the up-and-up
> Open submissions for long-form series; also distributes series currently being published elsewhere.
> Regularly publishes one-shots, making it a good potential outlet for already-finished work.

Noir Caesar ( https://www.noircaesar.com/ )
> Focuses on black (specifically African-American) content, but seems willing to publish anyone good enough.
> Seemingly series-based only.
> No "magazine" style updates; series are updated on their own schedule.
> Seems less regular than Saturday AM, but also seems larger in terms of readership.

Oni Press ( https://onipress.com/ )
> Technically indie, but at this point large enough by comic standards to be mentioned in the same breath as other publishers.

Antarctic Press ( https://antarctic-press.myshopify.com/ )
> Longtime large-indie publisher of OEL / manga-esque books.
> Seemingly taking submissions at present if http://www.antarctic-press.com/html/submissions.php is anything to go on.

Yen Press ( https://yenpress.com/ )
> Started out as a small indie publisher of original / Korean material, and has grown reasonably popular since.
> As of 2016, it is also one of the western arms of the Kadokawa Corporation, with Kadokawa owning a 51% stake.
> Editorial inquiries can apparently be sent to yenpress@yenpress.com, however, they apparently are not open to new submissions at this time.

Viz Media / Viz Originals ( https://www.viz.com/originals )
> *The* western manga publisher.
> Currently in the exploratory stages of setting up an English label.
> Submissions are open and several books have been announced. However, progress on the label seems to be moving very slowly.
> Still might be worth a shot anyway.

Shrine Comics ( https://shrinecomics.com/ )
> Small indie manga publisher
> Seemingly attempting to make the transition to physical volumes
> Allows crossposting to other sites

>> No.6403991

Other open comic publishers:

Dark Horse ( https://www.darkhorse.com )
>Dark Horse still welcomes your submissions, and all submissions will still be reviewed, just as they always have been.
>All unsolicited story/series proposals must have a full creative team on board. Writer-only proposals will not be reviewed.

Image comics ( https://imagecomics.com/ )
>Image Comics only publishes creator-owned material. They do not contract creators; they’re only interested in publishing original content for which you would retain all rights.
>Image Comics publishes creator-owned/creator-generated properties and THEY DON’T PAY PAGE RATES. Image takes a small flat fee off the books published, and it will be the responsibility of the creators to determine the division of the remaining pay between their creative team members.

Drawn and quarterly ( https://drawnandquarterly.com/ )
>Please email a low resolution PDF with at least 20 pages of comics and cover letter to submissions. Do not send dropbox links, scripts, or proposals. Please read our submissions FAQ.

Fantagraphics ( https://www.fantagraphics.com/ )
>submission page: https://www.fantagraphics.com/pages/faq

Top Shelf Productions ( https://www.topshelfcomix.com/ )
>Regarding submissions, we're easy. Just email us a download link of what you'd like us to review. NOTE: We cannot accept cover letters, plot synopses, or scripts unless they are accompanied by a minimum of 10-20 completed pages (i.e., fully inked and lettered comic book pages).

ideally it should be super easy if your work is good. In reality, each publisher has their own biases, genres, art styles, and moods that they're after. You'll never publish manga at DC Comics, for example

>> No.6404254

If people are still interested the idea of doing 2 page short story manga for practice, the two prompts are:

>There was an accident while your protagonist went fishing.
and
>The employee at a haunted house ends up meeting a real ghost.

Just pick one, or even do both if you want. This is meant to encourage people to work on /something/. It doesn't have to be drawn super well, examples from the WSJ Guide had mangaka draw their own prompts, and were very sketchy. It's about your interpretation of a prompt and your ability to convey a story in a limited amount of pages. And preferably, you can get and give advice to others, and even list out your own notes of your decisions.

I'll try to bite the bullet to get other people to participate, because I think this is a valuable exercise, but I feel like people might hesitate to start if they think they're the only one doing it.

Alright so here's my attempt at the 2nd prompt. I would imagine many or most of you could draw something better looking than this, so I hope this pushes you towards doing it yourselves. Got some notes of my own, but I'd like other comments.

So starting off, I wanted to rectify one of my issues, in which it wasn't really clear where the characters were. Since that was clear, I wanted to immediately establish the Haunted House. I originally tried to draw the whole thing, but that took up too much space to even try to make it readable, so I cut out everything except the top, I think this was a fine decision. The first issue was the door. I was gonna have the door peeping open, then show the inside of the haunted house, cutting to the characters on the 2nd page. I realized that'd leave me with barely any time for the 'plot', so I kept the door, and had the scaring faces.

As I was drawing the 2nd page, it felt obvious to me that I should have scrapped the door, to give more space for the scaring, to show more of the ones being scared, cause cutting straight to the scared faces on the 2nd page seems kind of abrupt, the build-up didn't seem enough for it as it stands.

If that was fixed, I think the top two panels of the 2nd page would be serviceable. As for the third panel on the 2nd page, I originally had all three of the scarers on the same page, to re-establish the fact that there were three of them. But I realized that with the current plan, I would have had almost a repeat looking structure. The vampire girl would have asked the last question in this panel, by the way.

I ended up changing the last panel as well. It was originally two, where the pumpkin head was going to ask who the girl was talking to, and it would cut to a similar looking panel as the current last, just a bit more squeezed. Speaking of that last panel, my lack of ability in perspective showed itself, I feel the idea (that the ghost disappeared) wasn't portrayed well.

Aside from a convention, is there any more formal way to go about it? It might not apply here, but in the manga Bakuman, which was a relatively faithful portrayal of the manga industry (at least at the time), you would go into the offices of Jump and set up a meeting with an editor. The editor would review your 'name' (rough draft), and either reject it or give you feedback to improve it and keep working with you, then have it published as a one-shot in a sub-magazine. it'd get picked up into the main magazine from there based on its popularity with readers. I take it as a given that it would cost money to set up a meeting like that, but is there any equivalent to this in the States? Can you physically go to, say, Image HQ and set up a review meeting with an editor?
Something like that would obviously probably be more feasible in Japan if I were to travel there, but while I definitely could do an anime style if I practiced it, Western is my strong suit. And as a Westerner, I don't think I could compete with actual Japanese if I were working in that style.

In 2 months? That's nothing crazy. That's less than a page a day. His art is solid, a little corny in a mid-2000s-anime-parody kind of way but technically solid and not horribly stylized. Minimal tone work, not a whole lot of detailed backgrounds. This is clearly a decent pace, but I don't know if I'd call it "fucking impressive". I'd argue even that is too slow. If he was doing it in one month then yeah, that's pro-tier output.

There's a reason most big time mangaka work on one or two series their entire lives. Coming up with one good idea is tough, coming up with two or three is improbable with the amount of time and skill investment a comic takes compared to a book.

Very rarely do you have a Go Nagai who can just shit out idea after idea consistently AND see them through to the end.

I think a lot of anons here put way too much stock in "creating your own world/story/franchise" when they would be happier and better off drawing from someone else's scripts or ideas. The US comics industry has plenty of jobs for people who just want to draw without having to wrack their brains over plots or character motivations or original designs.

Statistically, no one here is ever going to make the next hit shonen DBZ/Naruto/One Piece series, but you can make a decent living doing what you love anyway as a penciller or inker.

I'm starting to feel this too. I thought I could just draw and draw and put it all together into a comic, but when I go over it I just cringe. I can't read it normally because I remember placing every single pixel on the paper, so I can't immerse and feel the flow. And that's IF I like the art I drew. When I try to study how mangas I like do it, they have simplistic pictures no bigger than 100x100 pixels in most panels, but they somehow have more detail than my full page spreads. Though I can deal with bad art, flow is something harder to get because you need an editor to go over it and tell you when you're fucking up.

Is it possible to work around the scanner size by scanning the bigger paper twice and then stitching it in photoshop without it warping or leaving scanner marks or whatnot? Or do I just draw each panel on their own on A4s and then just do the actual layout stuff on photoshop? I'll just start by saying you're a way better artist than me so take what I'm saying in that context. I wish the bottom image was more INTENSE. The guy on the rights elbow should be slightly further back (like he's really PULLING left towards him) and with that same pulling motion the angle on his elbow should be closer together and the fist would be quite higher (the elbow going from 90 degree to around 45?). Also humans are really heavy so right would probably be leaning towards left at a stronger more dominant angle, which would make the scene more uncomfortable/tense having their faces closer. With that in mind I'd change lefts posture too, to make them pulling away from right, with an arch in the back. With the stronger more dynamic pose, lefts t shirt would be getting pulled further up the back on the neck with more stretch and tension in the material. But if you are happy with the current pose, the only other suggestion I have is for the clothes. On the bottom image the clothes look quite flat to the character silhouette, especially rights t shirt where it joins the pants. Also the left characters left shoulder (above the fist) the flat downward facing collar doesn't feel like it matches the tension of his v neck being yanked in the centre.

The how is up to personal preference, anon. It's not a fucking secret. You literally do just have to figure it out yourself what you like, because there's no real rules other thanthe most basic shit like "avoid tangents" and "don't overdetail" or whatever.
>the ratio of close up to far shots
Depends entirely on what you're going for.
>how much text to put in a panel so it doesnt feel clunky
Depends entirely on what you're going for and the quality of the text itself. Obviously if your dialogue sucks ass then don't fill every page to bursting with it.
>>when to draw backgrounds and when to leave it white
Depends entirely on what you're going for, and also limitations in time/energy. But generally you need at a minimum to establish location when location is necessary, and to keep things spatially coherent when things need to be spatially coherent.
>Please don't say "if you have to be told this, you aren't ready" because that's a catch 22. They had to learn somehow right? And since we're not japanese we dont have the innate knowledge
They don't have "innate knowledge" either, dumbass. They just read lots of manga, so these would stupid fucking questions. It's not that you aren't ready if you have to be told these things (although that IS true), it's that you're looking for answers to "how to do X" when the answer you give is the a huge part of the difference between individual artists. All anybody can do is tell you how somebody else did it, or how they would do it, but that's not the answer to how YOU would do it. This isn't a medium where there's a clear right and wrong way, you have to try lots of shit and see what works for you.

The warping is nothing to worry about, it's natural. You can blur it slightly to make it weaker.
Best way to learn lettering is just by looking at manga/comics you like and discovering fonts that fit your stories. I learned to not really care about perfect ovals for bubbles and to just let the shape be imperfect.

>The warping is nothing to worry about, it's natural. You can blur it slightly to make it weaker.

Is it really natural? I've seen some works with screentones that it doesn't happen at all tho', or maybe they where just not noticeable but I'm sure I've seen some where if i zoomed in and out it wouldn't warp.

Hum, guess lettering and bubbles is just practice then, i still can't seen to get 'em to be like, neat looking, thanks for the hints!

>> No.6407791

The reason it happens it because a screen can only show so many pixels at a time, which causes that issue. The warping also appears in real life if printed wrong. Most scans actually use a filter to make the image not have that flicker, which is why some manga scans appear not to be using screentone despite it official doing so. Resolution is very important to limit the effect, as well.

>screentones
Assuming that warping you're talking about is moire, yes that happens normally with screentones. The way to avoid it is to add some kind of blur affect after. In print a "blur" naturally occurs during the printing process, where the ink bleeds on the page very slightly. There's no direct equivalent to this in digital since digital ink doesn't bleed, but you can minimize the effect by applying a blur before you export. Also export settings affect moire, make sure you're not exporting the page too large.
>I've seen some works with screentones that it doesn't happen at all tho
Plenty of hi-res digital releases have moire out the ass. Pic related. It mostly just happens when they scan in a page with fukhueg resolution and don't scale it down by much, or when they just release the digital page at its full resolution.
By the way, here's a general guide on keeping your tone work tight. Not relevant to moire, but useful anyway.

Hand drawn speech bubbles have soul and personality, don't worry about trying to make them ultra-clean perfect ovals.

Can somebody compile a list of countries where you actually can draw comics full time either due to large enough market or due to potentially geting grants from the government?

>a Slovakian for example can be the best storyteller and artist in the world, but it will never be more than a nice hobby that maybe brings some cash every once in a while unless he fucks off from Slovakia or gets really lucky with a webtoon.
Firstly, webtoon isn't the only option. Neither is self-publishing, or local publishing. If that slovakian really is the best artist and storyteller in the world they can really just take their stuff anywhere and make it work. Yes, that includes japan, and no I don't mean physically moving there. You have to actually put in the effort and not be afraid of trying things that you aren't explicitly told you can do though. Nothing is stopping that slovakian from shooting emails to shueisha or kodansha or shogakukan or dc or marvel or dark horse etc with a portfolio, a pitch and/or storyboards/sample works to establish a relationship. You just have to prove to them that it's going to be worth their time. We have the tools to communicate with anybody, but that means nothing if you don't bother to actually use them.
If you think that's too much, you can always talk to publishers in europe instead of having to try to work something out overseas. Alternatively, the best storyteller and artist in the world would absolutely be able to succeed online self-published so long as they actually put their stuff where people can see it.

But we all know none of us are the best artist or storyteller in the world. Turns out success is a lot harder to reach when you don't have the skills to reach it.

But bascially there's two who are the strongest overall.
One is max physical strength and can throw full semi trucks over head and can survive jumping from a sky scrapers. If he wanted to he could probably kill the whole planets population but it would take him a long time since he'd have to travel the world just beating people to death. He can casually crush a human skull in his hand and rip out spines.
The other is more magical strength. He can Proably destroy a large island with a focused blast. But he's more hax then anything.
The first guy could be even stronger if he trained In Magic because he's very naturally talented at it but he doesn't want to because of some stuff from his past.

>> No.6408867

>>6408766
You should have a variety of works to show your full range, but since American comics are specialized, you need to pick a job to focus on and include more works pertaining to that
>Pencil drawing/Underdrawing
>Ink work (inking your own pencils, or your inks on top of a printed copy of someone else's pencils are good examples, especially from a well known artist that the guy can recognize)
>coloring work (this will have to be something you show on a tablet since you will need to color digitally these days)
>cover illustrations
And this is probably the most important if you want to be the penciller, or the "leading" artist for a book:
>sequential art, full comic pages and layouts

You can find sample comic scripts from professionals online and use those as prompts to make sample pages, and include those scripts with the pages in your portfolio.

While the downside of the American comic industry is that it is very difficult to get your own original idea published, the upside is that it seems to be easier to get a job drawing comics in some capacity because there are so many different positions and you can specialize in one area instead of needing ALL the skills to even get in like you need in manga.

I know guys who submitted portfolios and samples to publishers and didn't hear anything back for months and months, but they keep your name on record, and later on they got calls from editors with job offers as they were flipping through those samples again.

Hello, it's my first time posting in this general
<- the picture attached to my post is the recreation of a picture I created on a whim of inspiration using Drawpile: >>6411969

When I first created the picture in Drawpile, the limited amount of tools I had (I used two brushes, a binary pen and a hard round to blend) made the creative process much more engaging and fun, along with giving the final piece a sort of "low quality" appeal (I think that's how I can best put it). In all it took me probably around 2 hours to finish it completely. I was pretty satisfied with it and the general workflow I have in Drawpile but I wanted to make it "official" (since it was just a Drawpile doodle) so I fired up CSP and got to work

Recreating the picture in CSP took me probably 4 hours, most of that time spent on the linework which in my opinion doesn't have the same appeal as the original picture, probably because I tried using a "real" brush which I had a hard time choosing since I have so many options in CSP (I ended up using a brush that imitates Photoshop's hard round). Ultimately, I was not satisfied with the recreation and workflow of the picture in CSP, although CSP has the airbrush which I really wish knew how to emulate in Drawpile since it's really REALLY useful to set a dark mood

So now I ask: should I use Drawpile as my main program for creating comics? should I figure out a proper workflow in CSP? also, what do you think about the picture itself? which version do you like best? would you read a comic that looked like this? do you like the composition? I had a ton of fun coming up with it, do you like the use of dark values? do you like the mood and atmosphere they set? what would you change about it? I usually don't open myself for critique of any kind but since I had so much fun with this I'm going to make an exception because I want to get better and have even more fun creating pictures that can tell a story

Moving to any country that is predominantly xenophobic is never going to improve your life of you're some random schmuck
Only exception would be if you're already successful and or rich and somehow able to get past their immigration laws. But if you're a freelancer or self employed and not rich forget about moving there since 99% landlords don't accept foreign freelancers to rent + you're not able to be granted a permanent visa unless you're employed by a Japanese company and for a Japanese company to hire you you'd have to be good enough to warrant all the legal paperwork and money the company would have to cough up just to make it possible.

I think its fine, if you are that concerned about breaking the cohesion perhaps break it more intentionally, change the panel to a dutch angle or something that makes it read as seperate "camera" change. that being said, the light and dark help it keep consistent without panel assistant, so i think you're all gee.

>>6416816
Aside what that other anon said, which I all agree with, i think the simplest solution is to enhance the awkwardness of the situation, isolate her more, make her smaller in the frame. add some foreground characters or elements reacting to her negatively. More importantly, post the follow up to the panel its impossible to judge in a void.

Thanks, I'll play around and see how it looks. I did read that for comics, 180-degree rule isn't as absolute as it is for movies, but it's still a good guideline

It's "absolute" for any medium that wants to maintain a visual cohesion. And it's not really a rule so much as a guideline, and as such it can be deliberately ignored if there's other factors that help maintain cohesion, or if the overall composition of the page would be better if you broke it.

I like it, but you broke the rule in the page before, from panels 1 to 2, and that's what's bugging me more.

The two characters are always facing the same side in every panel in this scene, and at the end of the page Nepheli calling the tarnished seems more of an extreme close-up from the panel before.

So, in my opinion, would be better to show the tarnished facing the other side (2-3).

Then I think would be nice to add some shots to show the tarnished reacting to Nepheli going kamikaze (6-7).

I hope it helps.

>> No.6419016

Dang dude, this is pretty detailed! I'm gonna try switching panels 2 and 3 around as per your suggestion, but we'll see. I was trying to keep the lighting/flame direction consistent, but I might change it if the new layout reads better. I don't know about panels 6 and 7 (the Tarnished's reaction). I feel like giving Nep half of the page to show her resolve looks pretty dramatic.

>Nepheli calling the tarnished seems more of an extreme close-up from the panel before.
I get that feeling during sketching too. My hope is that Nep's skin tone and attire would clarify things a bit.

I think black only works in Alpha mode instead of Intensity, but that's probably because with other colors you're converting them to "black" already (since they're black dots in different intervals that just look like the original's value).
Black is just black, you'd fill it in with ink traditionally. Screentones that read as "black" are supposed to represent a very dark grey.
https://www.deviantart.com/moo-kopilot/art/Mojo-MOO-Ink-Bundle-For-Krita-876746591
This bundle has some screentone brushes if you're interested in an alternate solution, but I think if you avoided using black for the screentone layer it'd work fine.

Learn the fundamentals of Figure drawing and Perspective, then copy lots of manga. Use film cinematography books for the panelling, and screenwriting / playwriting books for the story.

I hope this was helpful, 王様

It seems the comics companies are no longer interested in the comics industry and are trying to cash their chips and make off with everyone else's too as it circles the drain

It might be easier to start with something that you are not as passionate about for the first several pages. Saving the one you're really serious about for later meanwhile working on other stories you haven't invested as much into first might be easier to do so you won't be afraid of disappointing yourself with the final result.

I have been. I haven't been twiddling my thumbs while doing all this planning - it's mostly been generic art practice, since I'm still an inexperienced artist, but I've been a few practice pages of other things. Have yet to produce a full on story yet, but every time I end up getting frustrated and starting over on something else, it gets easier.

I am not a comic maker or writer so I understand what you mean. I'm pretty frustrated with what I'm drawing right now but I still push through it because I know the first few comics will always come out poorly anyway and so I focus on the journey rather than the actual result knowing that at least I'm being productive and learning. I also think if you're having trouble making a story you can just go with a very feasible premise to start off with or a oneshot. It might be too simple or not as grandiose as the story you already have in mind but it's good to start with small steps.

Anyone here trying the super duper new AI technology? It could be usable for disposable backgrounds, or even help with poses and so on.
Maybe we could all share good prompts that generate good images for manga here, ones that could have good auto-lineart-generation or look good when converted to tones.
Or are all AI posters bullied off of /ic/ as a rule?

Frankly, it's not at the level where it's remotely useful for comics other than for inspiration. The fact that it needs to be trained on a dataset means it's limited to what's within that dataset, so if there's any backgrounds you need that aren't very common in that dataset then you're SoL. Plus it still has consistency issues. You're still much better off drawing it yourself.

>> No.6430042

I should clarify, since I just assumed that when you said "comic career" you were talking about a professional comic career. You should ultimately just make the thing you want now. Do whatever it takes to draw the hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of pages it takes to figure shit out enough that going pro is even an option if that's your goal, and if it's not then nothing changes, you still should just starting making your thing right away. You'll figure shit out along the way, the only way to fuck it up is to stop trying to make the next comic better than the last. I just really want to make sure you understand that nobody starts off making professional-quality comic pages without first making a lot of trash.

I was under the impression that making one-shots was a good idea. But I'm lost on what comes after that. Do I contact a publisher and pitch a series? Do I apply to anthologies? >> No.6430093

>making one-shots
>contact a publisher and pitch a series
>apply to anthologies
All of the above, and add "simply making the series you would be pitching on your own" to that, which is something you can post online and/or send to publishers as a proof of concept and proof that you have the chops.
But step 1 is getting the chops, and that means making a lot of stuff. What that stuff is doesn't really matter, it can be a throwaway one-shot or your dream series, whatever.
>If there are any resources you could point me to so that I could learn about the comic industry, that would be greatly appreciated
I'd be curious about this myself, because the modern comic book industry is pretty tight-lipped. Manga not so much, but I don't have a singular source I can link to for that.

You should read the book about making comics done by Shueshia.
You have a distorted idea of how mangaka make comics. The whole book premise is that there isn't a single good.way of doing them, hence why the book is about showing how the workflow changes from author to author.
