Hey /ic/, I've noticed that many artists here are very lost when it comes to learning art on their own, and the books on the sticky are not very useful, I've seen users from here practicing with those books and never getting any good result. That's why I decided to make this guide after asking a lot of artists friends and by my own experience too. You don't have to strictly read the books in the picture, but i think these resources are the most helpful and complete out of them all. If you're a newbie artist don't hesitate to follow this guide so you don't end up going back and forth like me when learning art. Hope you like it.

>> No.6399774

you don't need to look up instructional stuff until you feel stuck with your drawings. just keep making paintings with the idea that your next one should be better and when you hit a skill wall refer to the texts. you only need the tools to convey your ideas effectively.

gesture drawing is way more rewarding and makes more sense once you know anatomy well enough and doesn't make you feel like you're just drawing random strokes

You don't need pirated books to learn to draw. Too many will make you confuse. Youtube is enough. Medical channel share anatomy lesson for free, which old master couldn't even dream of and havd to learn through illegal means.

I'd substitute Anatomy for Sculptors / Stone house with Bridgman and Morpho. I'd also substitute "Ctrl Paint" with the Vilppu Drawing Manual, as that book is about simple shapes and form. Step 3 probably be Alla Prima 2, by Richard Schmidt

Bridgman might be a good idea but Morpho is too simplified and skips lots of info. The Ctrl paint course explains all of what is in pic related, while Vilppu's drawing manual isn't really showing how to practice the basics forms but rather how to apply them in the figure

i cant speak for everyone, but as someone who want to draw anime/manga, I can't understand very well how to use the fundamentals to make a anime character. I mean, I can see that I have to know them, but I feel like I am overlook something. I am currently trying Krenz approach. It looks promising, but I still feel like I didn't quite get it.

>> No.6401088 [DELETED]

>>6400846
Somewhat agree. The book is good for reference of how something should be. I got more value from looking and studying the drawings than I did reading the acutal text. Steve huston is NOT good writer and is terrible at explaining concepts.

I'd pair his book with his videos. And for an actual comprehensive figure drawing book I'd recommend hampton and his lectures on youtube.

Can't voice my opinion on steps 1-3 (they seem completely fine to me, but perhaps I'm overlooking something) but the manga books are extremely useless and not worth anyone's time. If anything, then video courses from Asians

>> No.6401313

>>6401307
I realized that "video courses from Asians" sounds retarded. What I've meant is Class101 (hit or miss) and especially Coloso, there are very few good anime drawing books and most of them are useless junk, so don't waste your time downloading random ones

>> No.6402043

The first two were OK-ish, then you recommended Vilppu and >anime.

If your goal is to draw anime, just do the first step, learn some basic anatomy, copy anime/manga styles, and watch how Japanese artists approach things such as
gesture and foreshortening. If you add any extre step, you'll end up drawing western twitter looking anime, which is trash.

i don't think so, as long as you don't go insane and only do the excercises exclusively forever.
as a supplement to drawing studies/your own stuff it can give you more line control and remove the barrier between what you want to draw, and what your arm actually ends up drawing.

Agreed with reply but try to leave Hampton until the end of Step 1. Hampton's forms are the simplest intro to anatomy after reducing things to basic primitive forms. When you get to Bridgman do it with Marshall's lectures.

>what part
Honestly I'd consider the whole thing step 2, you should know perspective and all the basic forms. I would also begin gesture at step 2 also unlike the image says to wait until step 3. This is because Hampton does a good job at explaining gesture and you can begin to incorporate the anatomy your learn gesturally. However, you should supplement this with gesture demos as well from the likes of Vilppu, Mattesi's FORCE method, etc.
