I don't think references are a meme, but I only use them when there's something specific I'm stuck on.
Otherwise, the rule I follow is that if it looks good to the eye, then it's good enough, no matter whether it's correct or not.

Alternatively:
>try following /ic/s advice and use references
>have an idea for a painting
>search google for references
>find one that I like
>try to copy what I like about it and transfer it over to my work
>comes out wonky
>give up and just boot up Stable DIffusion to do it for me
>looks perfect
>friends in discord love it
hmmm

Yes, you are free from the shackles of references and hoarding useless files of unused drawing material, tutorials, and an endless array of tits you never ever even used for drawing.

refrences or not meme if your trying to animate since that's keeping something on model or ya doing still life or sketches/charactature of real life.
if your trying to come up with something construction might be better but you could reference certain design aspects like sillohuetes, basic poses, colors, or patterns
>I say one exercise you could do is paint with 3-5 colors from any photo refrence or pick one pattern and shape to do designs with

I don't want to shit on you, I'd just like to see what you create when you're drawing for the fun of it and don't strive for perfection.

Reference and stiff loomis heads got nothing on imagination and sovl.

You're doing it in the wrong order. First you draw from imagination and create a cool image, THEN you go and look for references that go with your image to improve it and make it look less fucky. First draw then references.

a good general rule is to 50/50 it - do 50% of your drawing time for figure drawings/whatever you want to learn, and the other 50% for just drawing what you want, any way you can manage, even if it isn't perfect.
use your own body as a reference, if you're completely stumped.

Anon, if you want to improve, you draw even when you don't feel like it.

>> No.6393250

>>6391464
You don't actually draw. You don't have anything you wanted to say or express with art. Otherwise you would have already run into the limitation of your own personal experience and had to look up reference your self. This rigid adherence to chronology of the process is a hindrance to development of skills here, but it won't help people who have nothing to say but just doing it to fit in. Instead of having something to show for that can be evaluated and worked on, you use pepe instead, like a poser, or worse, a coward. I know this is your own way to create activity but I encourage you to put in more effort or stop wasting everyone's time
