If you are a /beg/inner or /int/ermediate in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.
Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the drawthread with fundamental exercises.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS wide using one of the following methods:
1. screenshot the image and post that instead
2. change camera capture settings to something smaller
3. send to computer and resize in MSPaint

TRY TO BE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK.
When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help. When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

I think your coloring and rendering are pretty damn kino, easily entering into /int/ territory however i'm not convinced by the face.
She's looking straight on yet her facial features are all skewed to the right, her ears feel a bit too big, her mouth looks to be way too up and isn't making a particularly "cute" gesture (imo, only upper row of teeth + tongue, or only tongue visible are most appealing) and her eyes have this very "3d" clay like feeling because of your lineart and flat colours there, you should look up some reference for drawing lively-er eyes.

Did this one with a fountain pen during a zoom meeting at uni, got bored and started doodling. Do you ever feel like your skill level just plateaued real early?
I feel like I've always been drawing at a similar level throughout life, it doesn't seem to have improved much since I was a little kid. Anyone got any resources or recommendations on where one could learn to improve their art? Never did get much chance to paint, always something I've wanted to try and get good at and now I feel I have the time on my hands to give it a go.

Regarding your artwork, it's hard to tell what is a part of the character and what is shading/patterns. Using thicker lines around important parts (like hands and the area where the shirt is tucked into the pants) will help with that. Also study up on anatomy, but there's always room to improve with anatomy.

Painting is a great way to get better! I've found that focusing on painting also makes your other art better too, so there's really nothing to lose.

Do you need to work on how to see things btw?
I find I can't really see things and can't translate those into drawings

TO GO THROUGH EM

>SEE DISTANCE BETWEEN MOUTH AND NOSE, IN YOUR DRAWING ITS TOO LONG. ITS SO CLOSE IN THE SCULPTURE BECAUSE WE ARE LOOKING AT THE STATUE FROM THE TOP, SO THE THINGS FURTHER AWAY FROM US WILL APPEAR CLOSER TO EACH OTHER

>2. NOTICE THE TILT OF THE MOUTH AND CHIN. SEE HOW IT GOES DOWN (PIC REL DREW A LINE) IF YOUVE DONE LOOMIS THIS IS BECAUSE OF THE DIRECTION THE GUY IS FACING SEE BOX I MADE

ALL THE POINTS IN THE FACE SHOULD BE RELATIVE TO THOSE GUIDING LINES. SEE HOW I LOWERED THE RIGHT EYE, IN YOUR PICTURE IT'S HIGHER

3. NOTICE THJE DISTANCE BETWEEN THE NOSE AND LEFT CHEEK(ONE WITHOUT EAR SHOWING), ITS FAR LONGER IN YOUR DRAWING. YOUR NOT CAPTURING THE FACT THAT HE'S MOVING HIS HED TO THE LEFT ENOUGH, AT WHICH CASE HIS NOSE WOULD APPEAR CLOSER TO THE LEFT CHEEK (AND SO WOULD THE MOUTH WHICH I ALSO DISPLACED.

In the reference the bulb and the nose are higher off the face. Closer to a triangle than a J like in your image.

We also see way too much of the right nostril rather than a small plane of it, this is what makes the perspective look fucked. It looks like the nose is facing us since we see almost equivalent amounts of both nostrils

I started drawing (digitally) after age 25, a couple years ago - didn't practice enough to actually get good but I definitely improved very dramatically, drawing like 2 hrs a week (on average) for two years.
I'm still not actually good, but there was a massive improvement, my brain was definitely connecting new neurons.
Dexterity and speed with a tablet increased a lot, sense of form, knowledge of anatomy and perspective somewhat despite limited study.
Basically it's possible at least to go from /prebeg/ to mid-/beg/, so that anons in /v/ drawthreads could appreciate my art and think I'm an artist

I suppose I could try drawing slower and maybe I'll do better?

Can you please help me out

I'm trying to come up with a good composition for this, is this fine?
I did like a triangle composition (pink) and cut off part of the pics strategically, like the bubble on the top and the mushroom on the right.
I was also thinking of cutting off part of the girl from the frame but i feel ljke her not being cut off adds some contrast.
I also have some issues making her face the bubbles, and not really sure if the legs and perspective is correct, i tried wrapping lines around the form but still it feels off

The rocks turned out better than I expected, it's not great or anything but it's not bad. I blocked the major shadows in, as well as in the sea. Idk how to render sand, but the contrast with water should help the imagination fill in the gaps. I'm not happy with the shore at all, I wasnt sure what I was going for until after which is just one hatching line, from up left to down right. Blocking in the shadows by drawing the outer line first is helpful, but it's not always convenient like in the small shadows that go horizontal on the cliffs. In this case it's better to just go in by eye and hatch. There is no point basically because it's the big shapes and shadows that help geographically and mimic the likeness, while the smaller ones aren't as important and can be invented or moved without damaging the final result too much

im having a real tough time with drawing because i dont know what to draw. id be in the mood to draw, then stare at the blank white page and after 10 minutes of random scribbles id stop drawing.
for the last few months id go a week or two without drawing, get hit by inspiration and draw a picture, then stop for a week or two. i cant seem to force myself to come up with new ideas or just draw for the sake of drawing.
the only time i could remember that i had a real want to draw was when i wrote comics. then i knew what i had to draw because i was 'forced' to draw what the story needed. but i even stopped drawing comics because i passed that dunning kruger line and have realized just how shit i am (both story and art wise), so im not confident with any project.
when, once in a blue moon, i get inspired to draw, i progress nicely but i feel that if only i draw more i would be massively better.
do you guys just grab a random image and try to redraw it or how do you have ideas of what you want to draw

I'm not experienced at all but it seems like an easier way to make a lot of different forms once you get the hang of it, especially if you want to do this as a job or make a bunch of practice sketches more quickly. It's a lot easier for a car factory to have machines that make parts and put them together in different ways than it is to have a big machine for each individual car.

I am also a month into drawing and am still trying to wrap my head around spatial reasoning via drawabox. I piddle around with assignments from YA "how to draw" books that I morph into my own prompts to get pencil time outside of the DaB stuff but yeah no at least for me (and can probably be said of other newbies) there's no way I could tackle Bridgman. I know because I similarly purchased some Bridgman books and was like "ya no where is the ABSOLUTE start of accurate drawing?" Could probably sub in Keys to Drawing for DaB, I intend on gitting gud with what I have and then reading either Dodson or Loomis' books. Bridgman is clearly way down the line.

not bad.
your face is to low and incomplete (but at first it wasnt there at all) and values could still be darker (this is because you have no background color value to accurately do the values) .
good attempts with the hard edges request i made. looks more clean when you have the correct shapes and this is a step to that..

next step would be to now attempt both hard and soft edges starting with the hard then softening what needs to be softened.
note on the left side shoulder those are hard edges but look soft on your image.
the right side of the image looks better than the left side as far as defined shapes.

Now I want to get serious, I want to learn how to do the entire sketching thing like it happens in the first part of webm related, because when I start drawing, I usually focus on one part of the drawing (like legs or face) and lose sight of all the proportions from the rest, unlike what real drawfags seem to do which is just sketch the entire thing and all.

I did a bit of draw a box but just the beginning, should I start it all over again or there's a better thing? My drawings are so beg that I'm not even worried now about learning coloring/rendering however you call it

ultra beg here but I believe you have to practice gesture and figure drawing a lot for that.

Wanted to tell you to fuck off for not being a beg but then I read your whole post. Try grinding gesture drawing from time to time it does help, also don't be a perfectionst about your first sketches. I'm a beg too and I usually make 2-3 layers of sketches, slowly adding more details with each one. Use just straight lines for the first pass and "box in" the thing you want to draw.

Also just keep drawing.

Just finished it but thanks for the tip. Should've added more darks ig. Also I was considering adding the reflected light from the snow but I didn't see many cel shaded artwork having it and I thought it would look weird with solid color shading.

DRAPERY IS VERY COMPLEX BUT THAT MEANS ERRORS ARE VERY HARD TO SPOT. JUST IDENTIFY HUBS AND THEN DRAW RANDOM TEARS OF CLOTH EMERGING FROM THEM
>>6387197
rendering shadows is part of the rendering process yes. But unlike colors you lowkey need shadows to show the form and you can be very fast if you just do ~3 values or use simple crosshatching

not him but why? from a beginner's perspective i presume because it'd the opposite of confident and builds a bad habit precluding a real "eye" for what you want to draw? i guess there's cases for an artist's "style" (similar to how leaving construction lines can kind of look cool) but i was wondering what the overall thought process was

How do I make drawing a habit? I have such a hard time getting started and when I do, for lack of practice, my art sucks and I get discouraged. And I overthink what I 'should' draw, what will appeal to others, what I can show, what is 'correct' if that makes sense. I'm trapped in overthinking and end up just doing this, procrastinating by asking stupid questions and staring blankly at endless youtube tutorials.
I think wasting supplies is also an issue in my procrastination (though I've tried digital but didn't like it) I keep thinking I need the 'optimal' most perfect painting to maximize my supplies. I should accept that I'll paint bad things, and that they supplies are being wasted just collecting dust. Try to do what moebius wrote. (I think) and cleanse myself of deep feelings. I guess this also applies to overthinking and being overly critical of myself when I fail.

Any advice or input?

>I'm trapped in overthinking and end up just doing this, procrastinating by asking stupid questions and staring blankly at endless youtube tutorials.
beginner here, this is me a lot of times with hobbies. i get so into learning about the hobby, trying to find every guide to see if i can learn a new piece of information, that i get burned out without even doing the activity. i knew i would do this with drawing so i forced myself to just draw and not read a bunch of text books. i even downloaded a bunch just to scratch the resource gathering itch knowing that i probably would never use them.
>my art sucks and I get discouraged. And I overthink what I 'should' draw, what will appeal to others, what I can show, what is 'correct' if that makes sense.
i followed this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WLqWX7onVmU and his order of subjects to start drawing. he suggests starting out with stuff in nature. start with finding photos rocks and old dead trees and reproducing what you see in those photos. these things have imperfections so if you add any, it still looks like a tree or a rock whereas trying to start out drawing a photorealistic human face is begging for suffering and discouragement. the first few rocks i drew were terrible and out of proportion relative to the reference image (but still looked like rocks like pic related which was after a few weeks of drawing) but after a few days of drawing a rock a day, they started looking better as your hand and eyes improve. as you get more comfortable, you can slowly increase complexity of the pieces you are recreating

do a little each day so you don't get burned out at the beginning, you can always add more later if you feel the desire without forcing yourself to draw if you aren't having fun (unironically having fun is the biggest factor). drawing is a hobby not a job

Man does perspective ever get easier? Mark making? I thought drawabox would get me some understanding and for sure this is only the second attempt but damn it's like I don't have eyes or even nerves in my shoulder or hands, i am ngmi. I am going to finish DaB for what it's worth but has anyone done an exercise or practiced with some book that "clicked" things into place for them? Many days of practice are ahead of me, but it should be good practice.

Yeah, that's unfortunately with the ghosting method. I find that if I ghost, say, five times, there will be 3 odd ones and 2 perfect ones. I also think the wavy lines come from just not engaging the shoulder properly. I often think I'm hunched over the paper which is flat on a desk rather than angled properly, and that I get fatigued like 90, maybe 120 minutes into a project. Lots of experience to gain

as a fellow beginner, draw a box is a good intro to perspective and good practice but perspective goes beyond drawing boxes forever. i'm almost through with the book perspective made easy and it's way better than draw a box imo since it offers way more perspective scenarios (drawing even spacing in perspective such as a chessboard in 2 point perspective or uneven spacing such as a store front in perspective, or things like shadows of objects in perspective) that you would encounter beyond drawing 250 boxes. after a certain point in the 250 box exercise, it becomes less perspective understanding and more raw line drawing skills that are affecting your box drawing which is why i personally felt it wasn't worth it after a few dozen 2 point perspective boxes. you'll probably get more practice with drawing on your own but having tools like knowing how to draw shadows in perspective that are falling on an inclined surface is way more practical than box #149 but your own mileage may vary
